A new display this year at the Ringgold County Pioneer Center & Rural Life Museum in Ellston is a melodeon stand that
once belonged to Laura STILES DUNNING, sometimes called the "Mother of Mount Ayr." Barton and Larua DUNNING were
leading citizens among the earliest Mount Ayr settlers, which give this small reed organ historical significance.
The organ is no longer in working order.
Continued flooding in the east fork of the Grand River watershed area brought interested groups to a meeting in Mount
Ayr Monday morning. It was noted at the meeting that Ringgold county has asked for the declaration of a disaster area
in the county because of the damage that flooding has done again this year. The area was also declared a disaster area
in 1993 and 1995, it was pointed out. Ringgold county supervisor Ethel CAMPBELL noted that the request for disaster
declaration was made late last week. The area will be assessed by the Federal Emergency Management Administration
(FEMA) before the declaration can be made.
Telephone service was interrupted for approximately five hours in southwest
Ringgold county and the east edge of Taylor county Thursday, June 7. This area involved the Clearfield, Diagonal,
Benton and Redding exchanges. Local manager of GTE for 36 area counties, Ray THURLBY of Chariton, said that fiber
cable under the west fork of the Grand River west of Mount Ayr was washed out by continued heavy rains and the cable
became exposed in the riverbed. Sticks and other debis snagged this and the cable gave away.
The Ringgold County Hospital board at its Jun 10 meeting voted to purchase property, adjacent to the RCH on the
northwest, from Doug HYMBAUGH of Mount Ayr for $21,695.
