Two new hunting lodges have been built in the Mount Ayr areaas part of a movement to serve visiting hunters in Ringgold county. Hunter's Hide-A-Way Lodge is a building near the house of the Larry BJUSTROMS north of Mount Ayr. A wooded setting is the scene for the log cabin lodge built by Don SMALL of Mount Ayr and located northeast of Mount Ayr.

Four Ringgold county organizations or individuals received special recognition at the annual Iowa Community Betterment Awards ceremony in Ames Saturday. One community -- Benton -- and Ringgold county had entered competition for awards for community betterment projects in the annual event which recognizes the efforts of communities to improve the quality of life in their areas. In addition, Helen BLUNCK of Benton was one of 70 people awarded the governor's leadership award. Jack ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr was one of 10 persons awarded the governor's good neighbor award and the Mount Ayr Record-News was recognized along with 36 other media groups for providing coverage of the community betterment activities.

Over 300 well-wishers came to the open house at the new Ringgold County Group Home held November 8. The newly completed facility for eight handicapped adults was viewed as residents coaxed visitors "to come see my room."

There were two first place winners from Ringgold county who will advance to December 5 state competition in the "Make It Yourself With Wool and Made With Wool" contest. Jodi RICHARDS of Tingley, 11-year-old daughter of Doyle and Connie RICHARDS, and Krista SHAHA of Mount Ayr, 16-year-old daughter of Kyle and Pam SHAHA, won the right to go on to state competition as they were first in the pre-teen and junior divisions of a contest for District 3 held November 7 at Southwestern Community College in Creston. There were 33 entries in this year's contest. RICHARDS had constructed a black skirt and SHAHA a mauve skirt and jacket. All garments are wool.

Several Ringgold county students and teachers were among those attending the Science in Agriculture awareness program a Iowa State University in Ames recently. Those attending from Mount Ayr were Brenda BICKEL, instructor Faye HOWIE, Ed McCREARY and Leslie BARKER. Marsha JONES of Ellston, a teacher at Murray, also attended.

Becky ANDREWS of the United Presbyterian Church was elected president of Church Women United during a business meeting of the group held November 6 at the Mount Ayr Christian Church.
