Fire destroyed a motor home in Mount Ayr Sunday, June 8, in one of two calls for the Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire
Department. The call came at 5 p.m. that the motor home, parked on Doug HYMBAUGH'S lot on the south side of Highway 2,
was on fire. The motor home was being parked on the HYMBAUGH lot to show it was for sale. Owner Nancy PORTER of
Mount Ayr had just returned to the lot after giving a ride to people intersted in looking at the vehicle when
flames were noticed around the engine. The people in the motor home got out but PORTER did not have to rescue her
purse, which was destroyed in the fire. The Mount Ayr Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire but the vehicle
was totally destroyed.
A grant for $3,000 was awarded this week to the committee working on restoration of the train depot in Mount Ayr from
the South Central Iowa Community Foundation. The money will be used to help with providing a heating system and new
wiring for the structure, which has already been restored on the outside.
