Diagonal Community high school had its homecoming over the weekend with the basketball teams taking victories over
Murray to help make the celebration fun. Homecoming king and queen were chosen from a group of eight candidates. Named
homecoming queen was Stacy GARRETT while Mark ENGLAND was crowned king.
There will be a shower held Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Mount Ayr Neighborhood Center to benefit recent fire victims
Howard and Luceal KNIGHT. The KNIGHTS lost their farm hom in a fire December 29 and with it went all their belongings.
A longtime Mount Ayr Record-News correspondent, Glenna WAUGH, died early Sunday morning, Jan. 8, at her home
in Mount Ayr. She had celebrated her 81st birthday anniversay on Decmeber 28, 1988, and had enjoyed a Christmas celebration
with her sisters and other family members. Miss WAUGH is known to have written the Middle Fork news at least since her
moving to Mount Ayr in 1968 from the family farm in the Middle Fork vicinity.
Rob THORNTON, co-owener of Mount Ayr Foods, received second and third degree burns on his right hand in a grease
fire at his home in Mount Ayr Tuesday night, Jan. 3.
Three officers of the Ringgold County Hospital board of trustees were re-elected for another year at the January 9
regular meeting held in the hospital conference room. They included Dick WEEHLER, president; Randy McDONNELL, vice
president; and Dick JACKSON, secretary. Newly elected, Alan IBBOTSON, was attending his first meeting as an official
member of the board.
Hy-Vee Food Store in Mount Ayr has a new manager beginning the first of the year. Jim FREEMAN, who has managed
the store for a number of years, is retiring and the new manager is Don WALDEIER, who recently moved to Mount Ayr
from Grant City, MO.
The Ringgold County Soil Conservation District met January 3 and re-elected Paul J. SMITH of Blockton as chairman.
John SICKELS was re-elected as vice chairman and Rebecca TAYLOR as secretary-treasurer.
Mount Ayr wretling co-captains, Cody SHAY and Scott ENGLAND, earned state ratings in the individual Des Moines
Register state wrestling ratings released December 25. SHAY, a 130-pound senior, is rated fourth in class 1-A.
ENGLAND, a 135-pound junior, boasts a 13-0 record as the Raiders' only undefeated grappler. He is rated fourth in
the 135-pound class.
