RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, February 12, 1981

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Just in case Ringgold countians had forgotten what an Iowa winter can be like, the area was hit by a blizzard Tuesday that cancelled classes at the schools in the county and generally slowed down the normal every day activity. The lack of traffic on the square as well as poor visibility indicated something of the storm's fury. It wasn't the amount of snow as much as the high winds that blew all day that caused problems. Drifting was a problem Wednesday morning after the blowing of Tuesday.

Gate receipts of $725.50 have been placed in the Robert "Boze" WARD Memorial Fund as a result of the good response to the benefit night of basketball Saturday. A crowd of over 800 persons attended the event in the Mount Ayr Community high school gym and witnessed the double-header interspersed with junior high games. The benefit was dedicated to the memory of WARD, who had served as the most recent president of the sponsoring Boosters organization. WARD died in December, 1980.

An item of interest to relatives and friends in Ringgold county will be the birthday anniversary of Mattie BURCHETT LEE. Mattie will be 100-years-old on Feb. 21, 1981. Mattie was born to Mahlon and Sarah BURCHETT at their farm home six miles south of Kellerton, Feb. 21, 1881. She was educated in the country schools and afterwards taught a number of country schools. After her marriage, she moved to Montana and later to Saint Joseph, MO, where, for a number of years, she has made her home with her daughter.

Mrs. Lois HUNT of Diagonal has beennamed to the State Extension Advisory Committee. Mrs. HUNT'S appointment was announced by Charles E. DONHOWE, dean of the University Extension at Iowa State University.

Bob WALKER, assistant coordinator for county activities with the Iowa Conservation Commission, discussed legislative issues with the Ringgold County Conservation Board at its meeting January 28.

Ed FLETCHER of Diagonal was presented with a 15-year service award from the Iowa Department of Transportation recently. FLETCHER, 35, is currently the maintenance operations assistant at the Department of Transportation's Creston maintenance office. He began working for the organization in the construction department temporarily from August 23 to December 31, 1965, then obtained permanent status January 1, 1966.
