Two people were killed when a semi-truck broad-sided a car in an accident seven miles west of Mount Ayr about 3 p.m. Monday [June 06], the first traffic fatalities in Ringgold county this year. Killed were Aubrey Eugene VIRDEN, 49, of Leon, driver of the car, and Mary E. HAYMAN, 80, of Kansas City, KS. They were pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Duane MITCHELL, Ringgold county medical examiner.

Taken by ambulance to Ringgold County Hospital was the driver of the truck, Richard BONHAN of West Plains, MO. BONHAN was listed in satisfactory condiction Tuesday morning. According to the Iowa Highway Patrolman George THOMPSON of Leon, who investigated the accident, the 1978 Plymouth was eastbound on Highway 2 and the 1876 International semi was northbound on P-27. The VIRDEN vehicle was struck broadside on the passenger side by the semi, pulling an unloaded grain trailer

Two defendants charged in the theft at Bushman Equipment, Inc. of Mount Ayr of over $30,000 in equipment March 26 pleaded guilty to the charges here June 3. Kelly HILPIPER, 24, of Milo, and Martin Duane NEER, 21, of Lacona, pleaded guilty to the charges of first degree theft.

There will be another lawyer in the office where Grant HAYES spent so many years practicing law come July 1. David NEAS, a 1966 graduate of Mount Ayr Community high school, who received his law degree from Drake University, Des Moines, will begin practice here after seven years at Audubon. NEAS, the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. NEAS of Redding, was Audubon county attorney for six of the years he and his family lived there. He will office in the Sylva MOFFET building on the west side of the Mount Ayr square.

Some 82 years of service to the United States Postal service was honored recently when three carriers received pins for 25 years or more of service. Roger MORRISON, a rural carrier, has 29 years of service; Wayne McGEHEE, who has served 25 years, is a city carrier, and Don CORLL, a rural carrier, with 28 years of service.
