Robert BECK of Riley township was elected chairman of the Ringgold County Extension council during an organizational
meeting held Monday. Other officers elected are Roger MORRISON, Tingley township, vice chairman; Melvin GRAY, Poe
township, secretary, and H. K. LORIMOR, Liberty township, treasurer. Two additional community chairmen have been
appointed to assist in the March of Dimes campaign in Ringgold county. They are Mrs. Perry WOOLLUMS of Kellerton and Mrs.
Rolla WEST of Beaconsfield.
H. L. CORNELISON, official weather observer for the Mount Ayr
community, has received the U. S. Service Award in appreciation of 15 years of faithful reporting of weather
conditions in this area.
Funeral services for Dallas L. SMITHSON, 78, were held
yesterday afternoon from the First Baptist Church in Mount Ayr, conducted by the Rev. Orville RINEHART. Interment was
in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. SMITHSON was serving his 11th year as a member of the board of supervisors of Ringgold county
and was chairman at the time of his death [at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, on January 7, 1962]. His tenure in office
established a record for a supervisor.
NOTE: Dallas L. SMITHSON was born in Mount Ayr on March 4, 1883, the son of George Wesley and Eliza Jane
(FRAIZER) SMITHSON. Dallas farmed in Lotts Creek area. He married Zona HOYT on February 27, 1944. Zona was born on May 1, 1901, and died in
Mount Ayr on December 6, 1974. She was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr
Cleo RAYLE of Creston is teaching commercial subjects in the Mount Ayr Community high school, as substitute for Bernadine
BASSETT, regular instructor, who is convalescing from injuries received in a car accident. Before her retirement in 1954,
Miss RAYLE taught for 25 years in the Atlantic schools.
The Mount Ayr Community high school band of 68 pieces, under direction of Merrill PERRY,
will present an hour's concert Wednesday evening, Jan. 17, in the school's auditorium. For the benefit of those who
enjoy athletics as well as good music, Doyle THOMAS, physical education instructor, has a fine tumbling squad which
will appear in an exhibition in true circus style with a background of band music.
