With 73 dolls handmade or hand dressed for Christmas giving through the Neighborhood Center, there was plenty to look at
during the annual doll show at the Center last week. Another 124 dolls were on display during the show.
Boys from third,
fourth and fifth grades in the Mount Ayr Community elementary school had the chance to experience first hand what drumming
is like in accompanying Indian songs during a hands-on exercise in a program about American Indians held for students. Ron
LIVINGSTON of Lamoni led the drumming and provided the singing for the group.
Dr. H. B. (Hema) PATEL was elected chief of
the Ringgold County Hospital medical staff for 1987 at a monthly meeting of the group Monday night, Dec. 1. She succeeds Dr.
Duane MITCHELL who has served for the past 32 years. The hospital medical staff includes five active physicians -- H. B.
PATEL, MD; B.R. (Bhalchandra) PATEL, MD; Duane MITCHELL, MD; Dwain CRAIN, DO,and L. Ann MUELLER, MD (Medical director of
the Hughes Treatment Center). Dr. CRAUB was named as vice chairman and Dr. B. R. PATEL, secretary-treasurer.
A 30-year veteran teacher at Mount Ayr Community school sturned in her resignation effective with the end of the school
year Monday
night. Mrs. Marge McFARLAND, a third grade teacher in the Mount Ayr Community school district, said in a letter to the
board that this would be her last year of teaching.
Four Mount Ayr Community elementary school students had out-standing
results on the President's Physical Fitness Test given to students recently. Travis SNETHEN and James STEWARD received
the Presidential Physical Fitness Award from elementary physical education instructor Doug McKERN. Darrell STARK and Teena
SHIELDS received merit awards on the test.
Ringgold county was featured in an editorial by CROP/Church World Service director
Jerry LEGGETT recently in a magazine published for participants in CROP events across the state. LEGGETT joined the walk
through Ringgold county in October and shared memories of the hike to raise funds for world hunger.
When some 6,000 persons
converged on Des Moines December 2-3 for an ADAPT 100 meeting, there were two from Ringgold county among them. David
WAGNER, a newcomer to Mount Ayr, and Rev. Phil KINTON, co-pastor of the Mount Ayr First Christian church, rubbed shoulders
with others from over the United States who were talking about alternatives in farming that are proving successful to the
ones sharing in the 100 workshops held. ADAPT 100 stands for "Ag Diversification Adds Profit Today."
