Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 11, 1960

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

By scoring 190 out of a possible 200 points, Bob ALLEN and Lyle FARIS tied for first-place honors in the second 4-H livestock judging workout held Saturday on the Jack ELLIOTT farm. The boys judged two classes of sheep from Craig ELLIOT'S 4-H flock. David BARKER, Randall HANSON and Dale BICKEL each scored 188; Don BARKER had 182 and Jim COULSON'S score was 180.

Ronnie SHIELDS of Tingley went Sunday to Madrid where this week he is attending the State 4-H Leadership Camp at State 4-H Camp. One hundred youth from Iowa are enjoying the week-long activities. Ronnie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell SHIELDS and a member of the Tingley Toppers 4-H Club, was selected by the county 4-H committee to attend the camp in recognition of his outstanding leadership in the county's 4-H program.

Fire of uncertain origin caused an estimated damage of $10,000 Friday evening to the west building of the McCULLOUGH Motor Company in Mount Ayr. The fire, which started in the large storage space above the offices and showrooms, was confined to that area by the efficient efforts of Mount Ayr volunteer firemen, some of whom were called from Kellerton where they were participating in a demonstration. The fire was discovered by Ray TWOMBLEY, an employee in the mechanical department, who went to the office to learn the reason for the lights going out. The loss was covered by insurance.

Dale BICKEL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. BICKEL of Mount Ayr, won the regional soil conservation public speaking contest held Monday evening of last week in Atlantic.

Two members of the faculty of the Mount Ayr Community school district have tendered their resignations during the past week and have been released from their contracts by the board of education. Raymond E. BYERS, elementary principal in the local school since 1958, will served as elementary supervisor in the Davis county reorganized school district in Bloomfield. Mrs. Ada Mae BLOOMSTRAND, who had served for several years as fifth and sixth grade instructor in the Tingley schools, has accepted a position with a business firm in Omaha, NE, in which city she will establish residence.

The Mount Ayr Pee Wee All-Stars won a well-earned 2 to 1 victory over the Bedford All-Stars in a game played Tuesday evening of last week at Bedford. Both teams scored a run in the first inning and Mount Ayr scored the run that clinched their victory in the top of the second inning.
