Phyllis SMITH and Burl REYNOLDS have been awarded trophies as winners of the "Bowl Down Cancer" contest, held April 30
through May 4, at Lucky Lanes in Mount Ayr. Mrs. SMITH, who bowled for the Hutchinson Seed Company in the Tuesday night
Blue Grass League, rolled a 476 scratch series, which added with her 126 handicap, gave her the winning series of 602.
Mary Jane PARK had 581 or second high score and Marion HENDERSON finished third with a 576.
The Bill RISSLERS will open their new house at 105 Sunset Lane in Mount Ayr, to the public on Sunday, May 13.
Interested persons are invited to inspect their Gold Medallion (all-electric) house between the hours of one and 4:30 in
the afternoon. The RISSLERS, who also occupy a new home on Sunset Lane, constructed the new house, which will be open
for inspection, for the purpose of resale.
Wm. S. BRECKENRIDGE of Tingley announced the sale of the Wm. S. BRECKENRIDGE Store to his sons, Dean R. and Billy R.
BRECKENRIDGE, effective April 30. The new owners have been associated with their father in the general merchandising
business for 16 years. Mr. BRECKENRIDGE retires after operating the business for 41 years.
Four instructors recently signed contracts to serve in the Mount Ayr community School district during the 1962-63 term,
which leaves only four vacancies to be filled. Leonard CRAWFORD, 38, will serve as elementary principal. Mrs. Jean YEAROUS
will serve as instructor in business education to succeed Bernadine BASSETT. Bill PRITCHARD will serve as junior high
athletics and mathematics instructor and Kay RYAN, daughter of the Amos RYANS of Mount Ayr, will serve as sixth grade
teacher at Benton.
The new chief of the Mount Ayr volunteer Fire Department is John McGILVREY, who was elected to that position during a
meeting of the organization held last week. Mr. McGILVREY was named to the position to fill the vacancy caused by the
death of James THOMPSON, which occurred on January 24, of this year. The newly elected assistant chief is Donald (Joe)
SOBOTKA.
The Ringgold-Taylor Farm Business Summary for 1961, compiled by Len R. BEATH, county extension associate, shows an
average increase in operator's income of $103 above 1960. The average net income in 1961 was $6,185, while in 1960 it
was $6,088. All incomes were figures on the accrual of inventory basis. This slight increase in income was due to
greater livestock returns and to higher crop yields. Production costs were higher in 1961 than 1960.
