A neck and neck race between Ernest BASTOW and Roy GARDNER for the Republican nomination for supervisor, BASTOW leading by
a single vote at the final tally, provided the sustaining interest in Monday's primary election in Ringgold county,
BASTOW tallied 961 votes and Roy GARDNER 960. In other races the voters of Ringgold county joined the state in a
strong endorsement of the candidacy of leo A. Hoegh of Chariton for governor; John A. TALLMAN for commerce commissioner;
H.P. TODD for sherifff; and Thelma CARYL for county recorder. Unopposed candidates: county auditor, Roy LEPLEY; county
treasurer, Ada ROGERS; clerk Charles J. LESAN; county attorney, Grant L. HAYES; coroner, Duane MITCHELL; supervisor,
John R. NOLAN; hospital trustees, Rowe DENNEY, E. M. WATSON, Harold WEBB.
Japp DALBEY of Grant City, MO won his third consecutive title Sunday in the open golf tournament held on the Mount Ayr
course. A total of 125 golfers participated, a record number for the event.
Harry BEVINGTON, Larry REES and Ronnie SMITH, juniors in the Mount Ayr high school this year, joined more than 700 youths
at Camp Dodge for the opening of the 16th annual Hawkeye Boys State.
A wild seventh inning with 14 runs across the plate featured the Mount Ayr Vet's first win of the season by a score of 9 to 8
over the strong Saint Joseph Red Sox.Kenny JOHNSON, a young Tingley left-hander, went the full distance for the victors,
allowing nine hits, two walks, while fanning nine.
The Methodist church in Kellerton was the setting Sunday evening, June 6, for the wedding of Miss Betty Jean ALLEN,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orr ALLEN of Kellerton, and Glenn LeRoy TRIMBLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry TRIMBLE of Kellerton.
Construction work on a modern dial telephone system for an 11 county area moved another step nearer with the approval
last week of a $2,910,000 loan to the Grand River Mutual Telephone Corp. by REA. This makes a total of $4,766,000 in three
loans. Present plans call for the installation of 23 central offices and the construction of approximately 2,700 miles of
pole line and cable.
