The first 20 of a group of 100 prairie chickens to be released in Ringgold county by the Department of Natural Resources
were introduced to their new home before sunrise Sunday morning. The birds were banded first before being released, in what
looks so far like a successful change of environment.
Steve FETTY was named mayor and the 1987 street improvement program
which leaves most brick streets as they are was approved in a busy evening of work for the Mount Ayr city council Monday
night.
The Lee SHAY farm home near Maloy, currently owned by Bob and Kathi SHAY, recently was selected for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places, as a result of several years of work by Kathi SHAY. Construction of the house
took nearly two years back in 1920-21 and the three-story farm house has many interesting features.
Robert E. ROE of
Mount Ayr was reappointed as Ringgold county judicial magistrate. The board members charged with screening and
selecting a magistrate include Dan CUNNING, Sandra MEKUS, attorney James PEDERSEN, all of Mount Ayr, and District Judge
Thomas BOWN of Corydon.
Hawkeye Bank & Trust has announced the resignation of vice-president and loan officer John FELL,
effective April 10. FELL has resigned to accept a loan officer's position at the Citizens State Bank in Shipman, IL.
It apparently took two pickups, one pulling a gooseneck implement trailer, to haul away all that was taken from the Howard
WELCH farm three-quarters of a mile south of the "Maloy corner" in southwest Ringgold county. The theft, which is still
being investigated by the Ringgold county sheriff's office, was discovered Saturday morning, April 4, by WELCH, who lives
at Greenfield.
With 110 young wrestlers from southern Iowa participating, the annual Mount Ayr Community Athletic Booster Club's annual
youth wrestling tournament was a success here Saturday. Some of the young Mount Ayr Community school wrestlers who came
away with titles included Dustin WILEY, Andy DUGAN and Jim ROTERT. The tournament is one of the main fundraisers for the
Booster Club each year.
Three Mount Ayr Community high school players will be participants in the first annual Southwest
Iowa All Star basketball game to be held Saturday, April 11 at Southwestern Community College in Creston. Forward Angie
SMITH and guards Kim WILLIS and Shelly TAYLOR will be on the roster of the South team which will be coached by Doug
McKERN, coach at MACHS, and Malvern's Dennis JANDREY.
