RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, April 09, 1987

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

The first 20 of a group of 100 prairie chickens to be released in Ringgold county by the Department of Natural Resources were introduced to their new home before sunrise Sunday morning. The birds were banded first before being released, in what looks so far like a successful change of environment.

Steve FETTY was named mayor and the 1987 street improvement program which leaves most brick streets as they are was approved in a busy evening of work for the Mount Ayr city council Monday night.

The Lee SHAY farm home near Maloy, currently owned by Bob and Kathi SHAY, recently was selected for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, as a result of several years of work by Kathi SHAY. Construction of the house took nearly two years back in 1920-21 and the three-story farm house has many interesting features.

Robert E. ROE of Mount Ayr was reappointed as Ringgold county judicial magistrate. The board members charged with screening and selecting a magistrate include Dan CUNNING, Sandra MEKUS, attorney James PEDERSEN, all of Mount Ayr, and District Judge Thomas BOWN of Corydon.

Hawkeye Bank & Trust has announced the resignation of vice-president and loan officer John FELL, effective April 10. FELL has resigned to accept a loan officer's position at the Citizens State Bank in Shipman, IL.

It apparently took two pickups, one pulling a gooseneck implement trailer, to haul away all that was taken from the Howard WELCH farm three-quarters of a mile south of the "Maloy corner" in southwest Ringgold county. The theft, which is still being investigated by the Ringgold county sheriff's office, was discovered Saturday morning, April 4, by WELCH, who lives at Greenfield.

With 110 young wrestlers from southern Iowa participating, the annual Mount Ayr Community Athletic Booster Club's annual youth wrestling tournament was a success here Saturday. Some of the young Mount Ayr Community school wrestlers who came away with titles included Dustin WILEY, Andy DUGAN and Jim ROTERT. The tournament is one of the main fundraisers for the Booster Club each year.

Three Mount Ayr Community high school players will be participants in the first annual Southwest Iowa All Star basketball game to be held Saturday, April 11 at Southwestern Community College in Creston. Forward Angie SMITH and guards Kim WILLIS and Shelly TAYLOR will be on the roster of the South team which will be coached by Doug McKERN, coach at MACHS, and Malvern's Dennis JANDREY.
