Beth FLETCHALL is the Mount Ayr Community high school band queen candidate for Appreciation Days. The daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Neil FLETCHALL of rural Mount Ayr, Beth plays the bass clarinet in the band and is captain of the
flag twirling squad. In addition to her music activities, she is captain of the varsity basketball cheerleading
squad, a member of the student council, captain of the drill team, a member of the choir and a member of OEA.
Two unoccupied rooms in the northeast corner of the Mount Ayr Hotel were burned in a fire Sunday, Sept. 4. There
was little damage, firemen said. Mount Ayr firemen were called to the scene about 8 p.m. to put out the blaze in the
hotel owned by Mabel RICE of Canada and managed by Brian FOLAND. There were no injuries. The state fire marshal's
office is investigating the suspected arson.
"Nifty Fifites" is the theme for the annual Appreciation Days celebration to be held in Mount Ayr, Friday through
Sunday, Sept. 9-11. There are a number of new activities planned for the week and, according to Bill and Rena
SMITH, chairmen of the Mount Ayr Resource Committee (MARC '83), which is sponsoring the celebration.
Mrs. Richard KNIGHT reported finding a cup attached with string to six balloons at their farm pasture four and one-half
miles south of Mount Ayr last Monday, August 15. It had been sent from East Alton,IL but had no date on it except
1983 so whe it was put in the air is not know.
A Mount Ayr wrestler took first place in the arm wrestling competition for men held in the "Rural Americana Olde
Tyme Competitions" held at the Iowa State Fair recently. Dick WINKLER of Mount Ayr was the first place winner in the
men's division.
Debbie HULLINGER of Kellerton recently met with U.S. Senator Roger W. JEPSEN in the Iowa Republican's Washington
office while in the nation's capital with other southwestern Iowa students attending the national convention of
the Future Homemakers of America.
