RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, June 08, 1961

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

Newly elected officers of the Ringgold county 4-H girls' organization are Joan STEPHENS, secretary; Mary Sue BASTOW, vice president; Barbara SACKETT, president and Kathryn McCREARY, reporter-historian.

Kenneth MARKLEY of this city defeated John PAXTON of Ottumwa in a playoff of the Class A title in the southeastern Iowa horseshoe tournament held Sunday in Ottumwa. Fred KEIPER of Palo won the Class B crown while Arlo WILLIAMS of Lineville topped Class C.

Approximately 80 golfers from southern Iowa and northern Missouri are expected to participate in the annual open golf tournament, scheduled for Sunday, June 11, at the Mount Ayr Country Club. Raymond STEPHENS and Japp DALBEY of Grant City, MO defending champion and last year's runner-up, respectively, will participate.

Wayne PETERSEN of Brayton, new highway patrolman, has been assigned to the Mount Ayr area and will begin his duties immediately.

Three new teachers have signed contracts to teach in the Mount Ayr Community school district, according to Supt. C. Arthur HANSEN. They are Lloyd SAVILLE, Robbie SHISHLER and Mrs. Larry KIMBLE.

The large combination granary and corn crib on the H. W. BASTOW farm at the south edge of Mount Ayr was destroyed by fire Wednesday night of last week. The contents, about 400 bales of hay, owned by D. H. SNEDEKER, were not insured. The building was partially covered by insurance.

The board of education of the Mount Ayr Community school district awarded contracts Monday night for two 48-passenger buses as replacement for buses which are 10 years old. The school operates 26 bus routes. The two buses were purchased for $11,451.

Landing facilities at the Mount Ayr airport have been expanded and improved during recent weeks by acquisition of additional land. The airport, located one and one-half miles west of Mount Ayr at the junction of Highways 2 and 169 and operated by the Mount Ayr Airplane Club, has included between three and four acres owned by the club and lands owned by the state along Highway 169. The enlargement of the field was made possible by leasing from Elmer MOTSINGER a strip of land 15 feet wide by 500 feet long at the south end of the field. Officers of the Mount Ayr Airplane Club are Weldon BARKER, president, and E. M. WATSON, secretary-treasurer. Other members are Jim SMITH, Bill RISSLER, Bob FISHER, Jack TAYLOR, Jo WISEMAN and John PETERSEN.
