Dr. M. T. GORDON of Clearfield, a member of the Mount Ayr Golf and Country Club, successfully defended his title as city
champion when he shot a one under par, 107, for 27 holes, Sunday on the local course. An all-time high number of golfers,
53, including 13 boys, participated in the tourney. GORDON had a 35, 37, 35 for his three rounds on the par 36 course. Lyle
DULANY was second with a 111; Royce DAVIS, third with a 114, and Dick YASHACK of Diagonal scored a 115 and edged Jack COATES
for fourth, 116.
Beverly HENRY, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard HENRY of this city suffered numerous body bruises
and the loss of several front teeth Friday morning about 8 a.m. when struck by a car on her way to school. The HENRYS live
south of highway 2 and as Beverly crossed the highway north to Shafer's Service Station, where she was to board a school bus
to Benton, she was struck by a car driven by Mrs. Bill PRITCHARD, a fifth grade teacher in the Benton Center of the Mount Ayr
Community school district.
Approximately 250 residents and former residents attended the annual Benton reunion held Sunday.
The eldest person in attendance was Elmer SCHLAPIA of Mount ayr, who will be 96 on October 27, an the youngest Bentonian
present was Frances Elaine SWANK, five-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle SWANK.
Hyde & Vredenburg, Inc., operators
of food markets in Iowa and Missouri, last week purchased the United Food Market in Mount Ayr, which had been in operation
here since November of 1933. The Hy-Vee store, which was established in Mount Ayr in 1947, will continue to operate in the
new location under the management of Walter PRITCHARD. Personnel of the Hy-Vee will be assisted by three full-time and
three part-time employees from the United.
For the first time since the organization of Pee Wee baseball teams in Mount Ayr,
the Indians enjoyed a season of being undefeated. In their outstanding drive for the championship, the Indians defeated
three top contenders in four nights, with Paul LONG on the mound. He was assisted in other game by Jimmy PEDERSEN, Steve JONES
and Steve MOREHOUSE shared the duties of catcher.
Two persons were injured, one critically, in a two-car crash which happened
Thursday morning about 9:25 a.m., at an intersection, three miles north of Tingley on the Union-Ringgold county line. One
of the victims, Ernest Allen STEPHENS, 20, of Afton suffered a crushed chest and internal injuries and Dean Edsel CLASIER,
36-year-old farmer of the Shannon City vicinity, received a sprained wrist and bruises.
The qualified electors of Mount Ayr
overwhelmingly favored the construction of a swimming pool when they cast their ballots at the special election held Friday.
The $70,000 bond issue was favored by 83.43 percent of the voters. A total of 817 votes was cast, of which 680 were in favor
of the proposal and 135 against.
