Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, November 06, 1997

by Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr Record-News

Municipal elections for the most part, did not generate too much excitement among Ringgold voters, who named mayors and council members in each of the communities in the county in elections Tuesday. The only surprises came in Benton and Tingley, where mayors were elected differntly from the candidates running on the ballot: Benton, where ballot candidate for the city council Ann BAKER was not elected, and Mount Ayr, where candidate Chuck BRABY won despite asking to withdraw and not have voters elect him. Named mayor in Benton was Don ZOLLMAN and Lloyd MILLER was elected Tingley mayor.

The city council had discussed the police vehicle at its last meeting and Monday night voted to approve the purchase of a Jeep Cherokee for the police department. The $20,260 purchase price for the vehicle will have another $1,500 added for the light bar for the vehicle and dog proofing of the vehicle for transporting Shaq, the new dog in the police department.

Ringgold county is well represented in the leadership of the Green Valley Area Education Agency 14 board of directors this year. At its organizational meeting recently Maurice JONES of Ellston was elected president and Frank GUNSOLLEY of Diagonal was elected vice president.

A ribbon cutting officially welcoming the Substation to Mount Ayr was held Tuesday morning a the restaurant located in the same building as Smith Convenience Store in Mount Ayr. Owners of the Substation are Craig and Susan WINEMILLER.
