Faye STULL, a bus driver for the Mount Ayr Community school district, recently took first place in the regional Rod-e-o
for school bus drivers held at Red Oak. In the competition, drivers compete in a written test and a driving test with
the school buses they drive. She advances to the state meet in Ankeny June 13 where she will compete with 24 drivers
from across the state for the state title. The competition is held in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Public
Instruction.
Elsie GALLOWAY, Mount Ayr, and Cynthia SWIGART, a Mount Ayr Community high school student, were grand prize winners
in the adult and high school divisions of the 14th annual conservation art contest held May 23 at the Neighborhood Center.
A rural Beaconsfield man and his stepfather were killed in a one-car accident seven miles southwest of Afton May 26. Ricky
CURRY, 22, of rural Beaconsfield, driver of the car, died at the scene and a passenger, John HUNT, 58, of rural Afton
died later after being transferred to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. According to the Iowa Highway Patrol,
CURRY was driving west on a Union county gravel road about 8 p.m., when he lost control of the car. It rolled several
times in a ditch and both men were thrown from the vehicle.
