Announcement of the sale of the north elevator of Iowa Grain Exchange was made Tuesday morning by owner Jim WEBB
following a Monday night meeting. A group of eight Ringgold county residents are in the process of forming a
corporation to take over operation of the elevator, probably sometime next week, depending on how rapidly necessary
corporate and state license requirements can be met. Members of the group include Myron INGRAM, Bob McCREARY, Jerry
SHIELDS, Jim McCREARY, Joel McCLURE, Carl RIGGS, Robert BASTOW and Tom LARSON. The business will operate under the name of Tower Feed and Grain, Inc.
Community Meat Processors is opening a new retail meat store area at its plant at 403 S. Cass Street in Mount Ayr.
Some 300 square feet of space inside a new west door to the facility will house the retail meat market, called
Farm Fresh Meat Store. According to Gerald CANNON, owner, the new store will feature beef and pork purchases
locally an slaughtered at the plant here.
Defense witnesses are expected to be called this morning (Thursday) as the murder trial of brothers, Harold Evans
TODD, 31, and Ronnie Dean TODD, 26, continues in Winterset. The two brothers are being tried on charges of
first degree murder as well as burglary and robbery charges in the death of their great-aunt, Mrs. Albert MICKAEL
of Mount Ayr, on the morning of September 22, 1980. A third defendant, Charles Loyd TYLE, 34, will be tried at
a later date.
Iowa has more farms with sheep than any other state - about 11,500 farms in 1981. Interest in sheep and their
management among Iowa farmers appears to be at an all-time high, according to Preston HAYSE, Ringgold county
extension director.
"You don't need to buy a no-till planter to plant no-till," explains Stacy STIERMAN, soil conservationist with the
SCS office at Mount Ayr. Ed JOHNSTON, a Diagonal farmer, has beenusing his conventional International Cyclo planter to
plant corn directly in soybean stubble for a number of years without disking, plowing or chopping stalks.
