RETOLD OLD NEWS

Mount Ayr Record-News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa
Thursday, August 02, 1962

Lisa Wilson, Mount Ayr

A 17-year-old Tingley youth, Garole Lee DUFFIELD, was injured and two other youths escaped injury Sunday evening about 6:45 p.m. in a one-car accident, which happened seven miles north of Mount Ayr on Highway 169. Occupants of the DUFFIELD car who were uninjured were Bill ENGLAND, 15, and Dan FERGUSON, 16, both of Tingley. DUFFIELD started to pass a car and while attempting to pull back into his own lane, lost control of the car, which hit the shoulder and ran off the road into an embankment. He was brought to the Ringgold County Hospital for treatment of face lacerations.

The Vern BANNER 120-acre farm in Section 1, Liberty township, was sold this week to Keith WOOD, who owns and operates a farm in Section 2 of the same township. The transaction was made through the Carl G. RIGGS Land Auction Co., Tingley.

The dwelling of the Raymond HUTCHINSON farm, four miles south of Mount Ayr, was struck by lightning Friday night about 11:30 p.m. and almost destroyed by fire. Most of the furniture was also lost in the blaze. Mount Ayr firemen responded promptly to the alarm and worked effectively to save part of the house and furniture. The dwelling was built many years ago by the late Arthur HUTCHINSON, great-grandfather of the owner.

The old ELLIOTT residence property has been razed and dirt moving work commenced, preparatory to constructing a new 35-bed nursing home in Mount Ayr. The new nursing home will be built by Richard ROUTHAND. Paul VARNER, who also operates the Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield, and was opened for business in April 1961. The Mount Ayr property will occupy eight lots or one full block. Four of the lots were purchased from Mrs. A. W. ELLIOTT, three from Earnest RICHARDS and one from Dwight MAIN.

Jeani BASTOW of Mount Ayr, a baton twirler, will compete Sunday, August 19, in the 1963 Iowa State Fair talent championships.
