A tornado touched down near the Lesanville area east ofMount Ayr but little property damage was reported.
Memorial Day services were held in cemeteries across Ringgold County. At Mount Ayr, Reverend Sam FRY brought the
message of the day and the Mount Ayr Community high school band provided music.
Ewald DVORAK of Czechoslovakia visited Diagonal over the Memorial Day weekend for a visit with Bohemian relatives.
A 165-pound calf was born by caesarean section to an eight-year-old black baldy heifer crossed with a Charolais bull on
the farm of Phil FOLTZ north of Mount Ayr.
Don and Juanita SEVIER are the winners of a new 1989 Mazda 323 SE which they won in a puzzle contest.
Mindy CARSON, a Diagonal Community high school ninth grader, placed third in the nation in the American Automobile
Association's annual traffic safety poster contest.
Ribbon cuttings were held for two new businesses in Mount Ayr: HawkCy Arcade on the north side of the square and
Greenland Machine along Highway 2.
Shawn O'MAILIA finished 12 in the state 400-meter hurdle preliminaries with his best time of the season, 58.8 seconds.
The 4X 800 relay team of Marty MOE, Robbie HALEY, Tory SHAY and Aaron GROVES turned in a 14th place finish, with a time
of 8:36.4.
The Grand Valley baseball team opened the season by winning the Murray Baseball Tournament championship. Darin WOOKEY
struck out 12 batters in a two-hitter against Murray. In another game, Rick VANDERFLUGHT pitched a one-hitter with 14
strike-outs.
Jeremy LARSEN, Aaron GROVES, Dave ALLEY and Neil WEEHLER each had singles for the Raider baseball team in their opener
against Villisca.
The Rebel Raider track team picked up eight first places in the Corning invitational. jim ROTERT won the long jump in
17' 3 1/4", Jeff BURMEISTER took the 800-meter run in 2:18.3, Darrell STARK in the five flight hurdles in 9.0 and the
200-meter hurdles in 29.6; the relay team of James STEWART, Travis SNETHEN, Jim ROTERT and Andy DUGAN in the 4 X 100, Bill BLUNCK,
Jeff BURMEISER, Josh SHIELDS and Andy DUGAN in the 4 X 200, Chris ELLIOTT, Travis SNETHEN, Josh SHIELDS and Bill BLUNCK
in the sprint medley relay and James STEWART, Darrell STARK, Drew LARSON and Jack WILT in the distance medley.
Three new school records were set by Mount Ayr Raiderette track members this season. Dawn HUFF jumped 18' 6 1/4" in the
long jump and 5' 4" in the high jump, and Nicky CROSS ran the 400-meter hurdles in 69.29.
In Rebel Raiderette track efforts for the season the shuttle hurdle relay team of DiAnna FARIS, Teena SHIELDS, Cindy
WALTERS and Ellen WILT ran in a season best time of 43.85 and Dana WEEDA had a shot put throw of 26' 1".
Rosemary SCHLAPIA had the top first high individual series with 606 in the weekenders league at the Mount Ayr bowling
banquet.
