Mike GREENE of Mount Ayr was elected
county Republican chairman and Karen BENDER of Mount Ayr was elected county Republican co-chairman for the remainder of
a two-year term which expires in March of 1988. GREENE and BENDER were elected to fill the positions vacated by former
county chairman Craig ELLIOTT of Mount Ayr and former county co-chairman Linda SICKELS of Kellerton. Craig ELLIOTT had
served as county Republican chairman for the past six years and SICKELS had served as county Republican co-chairman for
the past seven years.
Ringgold county recorded more than twice as many deaths as births and had more than half as many
marriages fail as were solemnized during 1986. During 1986 there were 36 births recorded, 78 deaths, 33 marriages and
18 marriage dissolutions. Ten years go there were 91 births and 98 deaths in the county in 1976. That same year there
were 42 marriages and 15 marriage dissolutions.
The SEATON Store, the "benchwarmers" who gather there, and the community
itself was featured in feature story in the Des Moines Sunday Register December 21. The story included a picture of
Sarah BENGARD and Willie ROACH, along with Duke, the three-legged dog out in front of the SEATON Store and post office.
The story, by Gene RAFFENSPERGER, detailed how Christmas comes to Delphos and the activity in the store and post office
on a typical day.
Roger MAIN will be installed as Worshipful Master of Faith Lodge No. 179 A.F. &A.M. of Mount Ayr. Other
officers to be installed in the ceremony will be Lyle FARIS, Senior Warden; Rich ELMER, Junior Warden; Merrill PERRY,
Senior Deacon; Rod FARIS, Junior Deacon; Scott JOHNSON, Senior Steward; Kelly MAIN, Junior Steward; L. M. BISHOP,
treasurer, and Larry HOPKEY, Tyler.
Being a freshman on the Buena Vista College basketball team this year has had special benefits for Jim FELL, who
graduated from Mount Ayr Community high school last year. FELL made the traveling team with the Buena Vista College
squad and so was one of the 15-man squad to travel to Hawaii for eight days earlier this month on a basketball trip.
The Buena Vista squad played games with three teams on the island of Oahu.
Iowa's response to the "Neighbor Helping
Neighbor" fund and its beginnings here in Ringgold county will be featured on Catch the Spirit the United Methodist
Church's cable television network January 17-18. The program will present Rev. Ed KAIL of Mount Ayr and Ringgold county
residents discussing the project's assistance.
A Diagonal Community high school band student was among three playing
with the southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band at the Cotton Bowl parade this (Thursday) morning. Troy CLARK, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jim CLARK of Diagonal, was a participant in the band which marched in the Cotton Bowl parade, attended the
Cotton Bowl football game, participated in a New Year's Eve party and visited South Fork for a buffet. Also participating
were Shonn MAPES and Ron SCHAFER from Mount Ayr Community high school.
