In 1883, the Thomas HUSTON G.A.R. Post No. 51 was organized in Redding, Ringgold County, Iowa. Officers in 1883 were:
William ANTHONY, Commander, A. AMICK, Adjutant, L. W. PARSONS, Officer of the Day, and S. OLIVER, Quartermaster. Officers
of 1886 were: M. A. WAUGH, D. W. POOR, I. T. OWENS, Rev. William GOLDING, A. AMICK, David HILLHOUSE, and J. T. MEDARIS.
Some of the G.A.R. members had seen duty during the Civil War. Others were commission into the Southern Iowa Border
Brigade of the Home Guards, Company C of the Third Battalion. The Southern Border Brigade guarded the Iowa/Missouri border
during the early days of the Civil War. When Confederate troops retired south of Saint Joseph, Missouri, the men of
the Border Brigade were detailed to guard the Ringgold County portion of Iowa's border each night with relief every
ten days. After three months of service when the danger of invasion by Confederate troops had passed, the patrol of
the Border Brigade was discontinued.
With the death of the last member of the Thomas HUSTON G.A.R. Post,
John C. ABARR who died at the age of 90 years in 1936, the Post was discontinued.A G.A.R. monument was erected
in 1911 at Redding's town park, commemorating Redding's Civil War Soldiers. It was unveiled on Thursday,
October 12 of 1911 with representatives of Redding, Blockton, Mount Ayr, and Grant City, Missouri, present. School was
dismissed at noon so that the children could attend the dedication services. Miss Edith STEWART did the unveiling.
Rev. W. J. STEWART offered the dedicatory prayer. The program for the services noted, "May this shaft register alike
the sacrifice of our fallen brothers, and our purpose to perpetuate their memory by citizenship with the heritage they
left us, a reunited and glorious union." A bronze eagle was on the top of the mounument. However, after it had been
vandalized, the bronze eagle was relocated to the top of the flagpole in the town's park.
