PVT George Washington CUSSAIRT, the son of Francis &Mary Jane (PHILLIPS) CUSSAIRT, enlisted into Co. G of the 4th Iowa Infantry on December 4, 1861, and was mustered out of service on October 14, 1862. He re-enlisted on November 30, 1863 into Co. C of the 9th Iowa Cavalry. PVT CUSSAIRT died of disease on April 2, 1865, and was interred at Middle Fork Cemetery, Middle Fork Township of Ringgold County, Iowa.
