THE 18th IOWA INFANTRY

The 18th Iowa Volunteer Infantry was organized under the authority of Special Orders from the United States War Department, dated May 21 - 23 of 1862. Governor KIRKWOOD ordered the 10 companies of the 18th into quarters during the period of June 10 to June 21, 1862, with the designated rendezvous at Clinton, Iowa where the Camp was named in honor of Governor Kirkwood. Captain H. B. HENDERSHOTT of the U.S. Army mustered the companies into service between August 5 to 7th, 1862. Acting on orders, the 18th proceeded to Sedalia, Missouri, arriving August 28th, then proceeded on to Springfield, Missouri, arriving September 13 and joined the Army of the Frontier under the command of General SCHOFIELD. They were assigned to the 1st Brigade of the 2nd Division.

The 18th suffered the loss of 2 officers and 33 enlisted men who were either killed in action or died from wounds; the loss of 1 officer and 131 enlisted men who died of disease; totaling 167 fatalities.

COMPANY B - RINGGOLD COUNTY SOLDIERS

DUNCAN, William M., Captain. Age 34 from Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa; nativity - Kentucky. Appointed Captain on July 26, 1862; mustered into service August 5, 1862. Mustered out of service on July 20, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

BOREING, James M. 1st Lieutenant. Age 25 from Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa; nativity - Virginia. Appointed 1st Lieutenant July 26, 1862; mustered into service on August 6, 1862. Promoted to Captain of Company A of the 18th Iowa on March 16, 1865. Mustered out of service on July 20, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

STONAKER, William, 2nd Lieutenant. Age 28 from Hopeville, Clarke County, Iowa; nativity - New Jersey. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on July 24, 1862; mustered into service on August 5, 1862. Promoted to Captain of Company B of the 18th on December 14, 1862; mustered Jan. 1, 1863. Resigned from service on October 20, 1864.

BRIDGES, Jackson, Ringgold County, Iowa. Natvitiy - Kentucky. Enlisted a the age of 43 as a Private on July 26, 1862; mustered into service on August 5, 1862. Received a disability discharge at Springfield, Missouri on February 20, 1863.

McREYNOLDS, George W., Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - Kentucky. Enlisted at age 25 as a Private on December 28, 1863; mustered into service on December 28, 1863. Mustered out of service on July 20, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

McREYNOLDS, John,Ringgold County, Iowa. Nativity - Virginia. Enlisted at age 43 as a Private on January 4, 1864; mustered into service on January 4, 1864. Mustered out of service on July 20, 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.
