JUDSON BOWEN FAMILY
Leona Lenora GARARD, the daughter of William and
Elizabeth (HARTLEY) GARARD and the granddaughter of Samuel and Elizabeth
HARTLEY, was born June 30, 1865 in Greene County, Pennsylvania.At the age of 11 she came with her parents
and other brothers and sisters to Iowa, where they made their home in Maloy. Her mother was Samuel HARTLEY'S
daughter. Lenora grew up in Maloy, where she attended school and was a member of the Maloy Baptist Church.
In 1890 she married Judson Ellsworth BOWEN. They established their home in the Maloy community where their two
children were born. Daughter Anna lives in Edgeley, North Dakota, and son Jim BOWEN (now deceased) lived in
Benton, Iowa. Lenora passed away February 17, 1952, and is buried in Platte River Cemetery west of Maloy,
and Judd is buried in Edgeley, North Dakota. Anna married Urban HERZER of Edgeley, North Dakota, and they
were the parents of two daughters, Elizabeth who died at an early age, and Marguerite who married Merritt
OGREN of North Dakota, and they have three children. James married Ruby SMITH of Blockton and they were
the parents of twelve children, eight girls and four boys.
