CARL WYMAN FAMILY
Carl Lee WYMAN, oldest son of Ezra and Blanche WYMAN, was born in 1898 near Grant City, Missouri. He had one brother Cleo,
who is deceased. On January 2, 1917 he married Grace MOTSINGER, daughter of Phil and Ida MOTSINGER. She was born May 2,
1898 in Missouri. Her two brothers, Wayne and Almon, are deceased. Carl and Grace first farmed in Missouri, then in 1930
moved to a farm occupied by the FERGUSONS just northwest of Maloy. Eight-year-old Billy WYMAN made sure his pony would
arrive safely; he rode it!
For several years the WYMANS drove one of the horse-drawn school house, the horses were put
in the red barn to wait until school was dismissed. Billy rode a horse to school, and whoever had driven the wagon would
ride the horse home. They often finished the farm chores just in time to ride back to Maloy, hitch up the horses,
load up the kids, and start back home. It was a time-consuming job. When the roads were muddy, the horses had to be
stopped often to rest. Must would roll up on the wheels and had to be removed before they would start turning again.
Later Carl improvsed a school bus by installing seas in his old truck and draping a tarp over the top to keep out the
rain and cold. Billy also drive the route with his Model A for a while. He received $30 a month. All the WYMAN children
attended school in Maloy. Virginia and Billy were members of the basketball teams, and Arloa was active in the girls' chorus.
Grace and Carl were loyal supporters of school activities, with Grace providing one of the little extras - homemade
ice cream for the school picnics. Junior (Peck) is currently living in Omaha. He has three step-children.
Virginia (Mrs. Kenneth BROWN) lives in Grant City, Missouri. Her daughters are Bonnie FARRELL of Smithfield, Missoui,
and Mrs. Gary NALLY of Maryville, Missouri. Billy and Arloa chose to make their homes near Maloy. Billy, who lives on
the "home place," married Hope RINEHART. Their daughter, Sandra BASTOW, lives in Mount Ayr. Another daughter is Teresa
HEISTLER of Omaha. Their son Barry lived in Mount Ayr until recently when he moved to Colorado. Arloe married
Ivor WACKERNAGLE, and they lived just west of the Ringgold-Taylor County line. Ivor served as a 4-H leader for Maloy
youngsters. Their children are Shery (Jack) WACKERNAGLE of Bedford and Vickie O'CONNOR of Des Moines. Ivor passed away
in 1984. They WYMANS celebrated their 50th wedding anniversay on the farm in 1967. Carl passed away on August 26, 1973
in the Clearview Nursing Home, Clearfield, where he had been for just 12 days.
