THE WARIN FAMILY
Francis Joseph WARIN, known as Frank WARIN, arrived in southern Iowa in May 1869. He traveled by train from Versailles,
Ohio to Afton, Iowa, and then traveled by stage to Bedford, Iowa. He purchased 80 acres of land, that was located 16 miles
east of Beford, on the county line between Taylor County and Ringgold County. Soon afterwards, he purchased 7 1/2 acres of
timber land in Ringgold County, lying along the Platte River almost four miles east of his original purchase. After building
a small house on the 80 acres, Frank sent for his wife Mary Justine and two children, George Francis, who was
3-years-old, and Mary Catherine, who was 3-months-old. They arrived by train at Cromwell, Iowa in August of 1869.
Jane Anne, known as Jennie was born in the small house in 1872, Margaret Teresa, known in later years as Sister Mary
Eululia, was born in 1878, Josephine was born in 1881 and Johnnie was born in 1884. In 1885, a new home was erected on
the farm. (This house is now [1987] occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Mike WARIN, a great-grandson of Frank and Mary Justine
WARIN.) In 1899, Mr. and Mrs. WARIN moved into the town of Maloy to a house they had built. There they lived until their
deaths. In 1942, their son George and his wife Carrie moved from the "homeplace" into this house, where they too, lived
until their deaths. George Francis WARIN married Margaret Caroline SULLIVAN in 1896 in the original [St. Mary's]

in Maloy. They had 10 children: Joseph who died as a young child; Anna Eulalia; Mary Catherine; Rose Callista; Margaret
Caroline, Roger Francis; John Donald; Emmet Robert; George Leo; and William Sullivan who died when a young child. Carrie
died Feb. 26, 1945 at the age of 72 and George died Dec. 2, 1964 at the age of 98. Anna Eulalia WARIN, the eldest living
child of George and Carrie WARIN, was a bookkeeper in Omaha, Nebraska for a number of years. In 1943, she moved to
Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Internal Revenue Department. In 1944, Anna came back to Maloy to
help care for her mother, Carrie, who had suffered a stroke. Anna continued to live in Maloy and care for her parents
and aunts until October 1980, when she moved with her sisters, Mary and Rose, to her present home in Creston, Iowa.
