THE WARIN FAMILY

Francis Joseph WARIN, known as Frank WARIN, arrived in southern Iowa in May 1869. He traveled by train from Versailles, Ohio to Afton, Iowa, and then traveled by stage to Bedford, Iowa. He purchased 80 acres of land, that was located 16 miles east of Beford, on the county line between Taylor County and Ringgold County. Soon afterwards, he purchased 7 1/2 acres of timber land in Ringgold County, lying along the Platte River almost four miles east of his original purchase. After building a small house on the 80 acres, Frank sent for his wife Mary Justine and two children, George Francis, who was 3-years-old, and Mary Catherine, who was 3-months-old. They arrived by train at Cromwell, Iowa in August of 1869.

Jane Anne, known as Jennie was born in the small house in 1872, Margaret Teresa, known in later years as Sister Mary Eululia, was born in 1878, Josephine was born in 1881 and Johnnie was born in 1884.

In 1885, a new home was erected on the farm. (This house is now [1987] occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Mike WARIN, a great-grandson of Frank and Mary Justine WARIN.) In 1899, Mr. and Mrs. WARIN moved into the town of Maloy to a house they had built. There they lived until their deaths. In 1942, their son George and his wife Carrie moved from the "homeplace" into this house, where they too, lived until their deaths.

George Francis WARIN married Margaret Caroline SULLIVAN in 1896 in the original [St. Mary's] Catholic church in Maloy. They lived on and farmed the land which Frank WARIN had purchased in 1869, until they retired in Maloy. They had 10 children: Joseph who died as a young child; Anna Eulalia; Mary Catherine; Rose Callista; Margaret Caroline, Roger Francis; John Donald; Emmet Robert; George Leo; and William Sullivan who died when a young child. Carrie died Feb. 26, 1945 at the age of 72 and George died Dec. 2, 1964 at the age of 98.

Anna Eulalia WARIN, the eldest living child of George and Carrie WARIN, was a bookkeeper in Omaha, Nebraska for a number of years. In 1943, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked as a bookkeeper for the Internal Revenue Department. In 1944, Anna came back to Maloy to help care for her mother, Carrie, who had suffered a stroke. Anna continued to live in Maloy and care for her parents and aunts until October 1980, when she moved with her sisters, Mary and Rose, to her present home in Creston, Iowa. Anna was 87 on March 10, 1986.

Mary Catherine WARIN lived her entire live in her parental home until she moved to Creston, Iowa, in October 1980. Mary helped Anna and Rose care for their parents when they became ill and aged. She and her...next page is missing...

NOTES: Francis Joseph "Frank" WARIN was born in 1843, and died in 1939. Mary Justine (GRILLOTT) WARIN was born in 1843, and died in 1923. They were interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

George Francis WARIN was born at Versailles, Ohio on August 18, 1866, and died December 2, 1964. Margaret Caroline "Carrie" (SULLIVAN) WARIN, the daughter of Roger and Hannah (DILLON) SULLIVAN, was born March 26, 1872, Decatur County, Iowa, and died February 26, 1945. They were interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Margaret Caroline "Carrie" (SULLIVAN) WARIN was born seven months after her father's death on July 9, 1871. He died of a sunstroke while working in the hay field. After Roger's death, Hannah (DILLON) SULLIVAN married John LAMBERT of Ringgold County and had two more children, Rose LAMBERT and William LAMBERT. Jane Anne "Jennie" WARIN was born September 2, 1872, and died in 1954. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Josephine WARIN was born in December of 1881 from 1900 Federal Census.

Johnnie WARIN was born in 1884, and died in 1889 with interment at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Joseph T. WARIN, George and Carrie's son, was born November 16, 1896, and died February 11, 1897. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Anna Eulalia WARIN, daughter of George and Carrie, was born March 10, 1899, and died January 3, 1994. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Rose Callista WARIN, daughter of George and Carrie, was born October 28, 1901, and died Feburary 12, 1996. She was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Mary Catherine WARIN was born in Taylor County, Iowa on September 26, 1900, and died in Creston March 22, 1983, at the age of 82 years.

Roger Francis WARIN ws born October 27, 1905, and died January 2, 1959, with interment at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

John Donald WARIN was born in Taylor County on November 25, 1907, and died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines on March 8, 1986. He established Marycrest Farms in 1944. He married Mary Callista SHAY on August 18, 1932 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Maloy. Mary Callista (SHAY) WARIN, the daughter of Robert Emmett and Margaret Ellen (HART) SHAY, was born near Maloy on December 18, 1910, and died January 29, 2001, Mount Ayr.

John Thomas WARIN, son of John Donald and Mary (SHAY) WARIN, was born on September 8, 1948, and died at Maloy on April 24, 1949. He was interred at St. Mary's Cemetery near Maloy.

Emmet Robert and George "Leo" WARIN were twins, born near Maloy on October 9, 1909. Dr. George Leo WARIN resided in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Pearl June (MATTHEWS) WARIN, the daughter of Eugene and Nora (BUCKINGHAM) MATTHEWS, was born in Tabor, Iowa on June 13, 1907, and died at the age of 93 years on May 28, 2011. She married Emmet R. WARIN June 5, 1938 at St. Patrick's Church, Imogene, Iowa. Emmet was an attorney in Mount Ayr. He ws born October 9, 1909, and died May 18, 1970. They were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.

William M. WARIN, son of Emmet and Pearl June (MATTHEWS) WARIN, was born in Creston, Iowa on April 1, 1944, and died April 4, 2000, Mesa, Arizona. He was interred at Rose Hill Cemetermy, Mount Ayr. He married on August 28, 1966, Immaculate Conception Church, Maloy, to Elizabeth Ann WATSON of Diagonal, Iowa.

Deanna Sue "Dee" (TAYLOR) WARIN, the daughter of Clifford and Lorabel TAYLOR, was born near Diagonal on February 14, 1943, and died August 25, 2001. She was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr. She married Michael G. WARIN on September 26, 1963. Their son, James Francis died January 12, 1973, and was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr.
