MALOY, IOWA CENTENNIAL HISTORY: 1887 - 1987
CEMETERIES
The earliest cemetery in the township was the ALLOWAY Burying Ground (also called Hickory Grove). It was located 1/4 mile
north and slightly east of the present Platte River Cemetery. Several ALLOWAY children were buried there, but the graves
have been lost. In the 1920's two small stones were to been seen along a fence row on the W. H. SHAY farm. Sarah Jane
ALLOWAY, who died in 1908, is buried in the Platte River Cemetery.
The next eldest is the Shay Cemetery (now known as the Platte River Cemetery). The land for the cemetery was donated
by John DALE before he sold the land to Luke SHAY in 1867. Located one mile west of Maloy, it has been in continuous use
since that time. For most of those years, it was surrounded by land owned by the SHAYS, and it now lies between the farms
owned by Cleo LYNCH to the west and Mary WARIN to the east.
St. Mary's, the Catholic Cemetery, is located one mile east and one quarter mile north of Maloy. It was organized about
1870 and was part of the farm homesteaded by Edward KUHN. In the deed giving possession of the farm to William LAMBERT
in 1870, the three acres are designated "Church Land." The first burial in the cemetery was of a Mrs. CAHILL who died on
October 9. 1871.
