TALES from the FRONT PORCH

Ringgold County's Oral Legend & Memories Project

KELLERTON SCHOOL HOUSE, KELLERTON, IOWA

There was a round tube used as a fire escape was attached to the back of the school, it extended up to the second floor. Four generations of my family (me included) would climb up that tube to its top and slide down it. It became a family tradition for each new generation whenever we visited Kellerton, it started with my grandmother's generation when she and her siblings were children.

Bonnie Minthorn Wilson writes, saying:

Regarding the Kellerton School House: Growing up in Kellerton I have spent many hours playing in that tube. It was possible to climb clear to the top and then slide back down. At the beginning of every school year, we would have a fire drill and would get to go into the principal's office and slide down from the inside. What a thrill! It didn't take much to thrill a kid back in 'the old days'. Of course, Mrs. Huntsicker always stood by making sure one did not actually have fun during the seriousness of the fire drill."
