The first STOOPS family of record came to America in 1590. It is reported that the family came from either Ireland or the Isle of Man. The CARRS, SMALLEYS, and DWYERS who married into the STOOPS family were of Irish descent.

Eliakem STOOPS was born in New Jersey and appears in the 1790 Fayette County, Pennsylvania census. During his youth, he moved approximately 10 miles into Whitley Township of Green County, Pennsylvania. Eliakem married Margaret CARR. Their son George lived in Switzerland County, Indiana at Florence.

Eliakem STOOPS was a taxpayer in Dunbar Township of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, 1799, listed as owning 1 horse, 2 cattle and about 97 acres of land. When he died, his estate was divided into two 50 acre shares. One share went to James STOOPS under the guardianship of a James ROBERTS; the other share to Andrew STOOPS.

Margaret (CARR) STOOPS, at the aged of 89 years, applied for Eliakem's Revolutionary War pension on July 31st of 1850. Eliakem enlisted from New Jersy in 1775, and was a participant in the expedition to Quebec and the taking of Burgoyne. He served six months in the Militia in 1779, and was in the service when ARNOLD deserted to the enemy. Margaret's claim was not allowed as she failed to furnish specific proof of Eliakem's service along with the date of her marriage, as required by the pension laws. Of note, there was a John STOOPS, also a Revolutionary War soldier and perhaps Eliakem's brother?

Joseph STOOPS, Sr., the son of Eliakem and Margaret (CARRS) STOOPS, was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on February 22, 1792. Joseph was a farmer. He was married [probably in West Virginia] to Sophia WADE. Sophia was born on January 20, 1789 in Virginia [possibly now West Virginia.

Joseph STOOPS, Sr. served in the War of 1812 with the Green County [Pennsylvania] Volunteer Militia, under Capt. T. J. SEELEY from September 25, 1812 to December 2nd, 1812. Joseph received a pension for his service in 1871 [ Pension # SC-1094].
Sophia (WADE) STOOPS died August 22, 1860, Decatur, Adams County, Indiana. Joseph STOOPS, Sr. died October 2, 1878, Ringgold County, Iowa, and was interred at Oak Ridge (a.k.a. Forest Home) Cemetery, Liberty Township of Ringgold County, Iowa.

Joseph Sr. and Sophia (WADE) STOOPS were the parents of 9 children. The first four children were born in Virginia, but what is now known as Monongalia County, West Virginia. West Virginia was made a separate state in 1863. The last five children were born in Wayne County, Ohio. Children are listed below:

Massa Jane (STOOPS) and Hobart Hampton SCOTT

Massa Jane (STOOPS) SCOTT, the daughter of Joseph Sr. and Sophia (WADE) STOOPS, was born in Wayne County, Ohio, on February 10, 1828. Massa and Hobart Hampton SCOTT were married in Decatur, Adams County, Indiana, on April 2, 1846. [Adams Co. IN marriages, Book B, p. 16] Massa died January 30, 1860, Decatur, Adams County, Indiana.

OBITUARY.

Died of lung fever on the morning of January 30th, 1860 in Decatur Indiana, Mrs. Marcia Jane SCOTT, wife of Hobart H. SCOTT, aged 32 years [less than eleven days of age 32], and on the same morning within an hour after the death of Mrs. SCOTT died also her infant daughter Octavia Jeanette, aged six months [born July 24, 1859]. The mother and child were both buried in the same casket at the burying grounds in Decatur.

Thus heavily has the hand of death fallen on the family of Mr. SCOTT leaving him to deplore the loss of his wife and child and the safe parctice of the balance of his little children who are left to his care.

Mrs. SCOTT was a pious lady and wellbeloved by her neighbors. Life had its woes but death no dread to her. Apprehending to her work was complete and conciousness enabled her to evidence her time peace of mind when her soul took wings.

Hobart Hampton SCOTT was born June 17, 1823, Hartford, Connecticut. He was a Private, enlisting on October 25, 1861 with Company A of the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Private SCOTT died on July 7, 1863 at the age of 40 years, and was re-interred July 10, 1868, at Memphis National Cemetery, Memphis, Tennessee, Section MA, Site 50.
