THE SAVILLE FAMILY

George SAVILLE, son of Abraham SAVILLE (1763-1841) and Martha (KEEBLER) SAVILLE (ca. 1765-1841), was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, in 1782. He joined the Virginia Militia on July 26, 1806. George married in Rockbridge County, Virginia, December 29, 1808 Elizabeth "Betsy" BOGAN. Elizabeth was born March 15, 1785, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia. Elizabeth's father may have been Andrew BOGAN who signed her marriage bond.

The only Andrew BOGAN married before 1800 to the widow Nancy DICKENS on June 27m 1799. If this is the correct Andrew BOGAN, his marriage to Nancy DICKENS must have been his second marriage since Elizabeth "Betsy" BOGAN was born before 1789. Elizabeth "Betsy"'s brother Andrew BOGAN made an oath on April 11, 1814 when she was bonded in her second marriage to John LEECH, that she was older than he (Andrew) and that he was 25-years-old.

The exact date of George SAVILLE'S death is not known, but an appraisal and inventory of his estate was ordered on June 4, 1810, Rockbridge County, Virginia.

Elizabeth "Betsy" (BOGAN) SAVILLE married second in 1814, Rockbridge County, Virginia, to John LEECH. They had at least one son named Andrew. Betsy's brother, Andrew BOGAN, who died sometime between April 28 and June 6, 1825, left the principle of his money in his will to John SAVILLE, the son of George, and Andrew LEECH, the son of John. John SAVILLE and Andrew LEECH were half-brothers.

From Andrew BOGAN's will, it is clear that he and Elizabeth had at least three sisters:

1) Sally BOGAN who was mentally incapcipated in some fashion and never married. Andrew made offers of money and land in his will to the sister who would take care of Sally until Sally's death.

2) Unnamed sister who was married to James WALLACE and had a daughter named Jenny.

3) Unnamed sister who was married to a Mr. SMITH and lived near an area called Roan Oak.

Elizabeth "Betsy" (BOGAN) SAVILLE LEECH died October 24, 1868, Rockbridge County, Virginia.

John SAVILLE, son of George and Elizabeth "Betsy" (BOGAN) SAVILLE, was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, November 12, 1809. He died June 22, 1884, Ringgold County, Iowa, and was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. John and Sarah Peterfish SHAFER were married by The Reverend Sam HOUSTON at the residence of the bride's father, two miles from the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, April 4, 1832. Sarah Peterfish (SHAFER) SAVILLE was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia, November 30, 1808, the daughter of Jacob SHAFER (ca. 1768-1852) and Mary (PETERFISH) SHAFER. John and Sarah resided in Rockbridge County, Virginia, for the following 24 years. In the fall of 1856 they moved to Knox County, Tennessee. Two of their sons, Jacob and John Franklin entered into the military, serving the Confederacy during the Civil War, while they resided in Tennessee. In the fall of 1863, the SAVILLE family procured a pass from the commander of the Federal troops and were allowed to leave for Ohio. The family located in Xenia of Greene County, Ohio, remaining there until 1868. John and Sarah left Ohio, arriving in Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa in the fall of 1868. They remained in Ringgold County, Iowa until their deaths.

John SAVILLE died June 22, 1884, Ringgold County, Iowa. Sarah died February 14, 1888, Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. John and Sarah were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr, Iowa.

Jacob Abraham SAVILLE served during the Civil War with Company B of the 63rd Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry, enlisting on May 1, 1862, Knoxville, Tennessee. He was transferred to Company G on June 30, 1862, where he was detailed as a nurse. On April 1, 1863, Jacob was promoted to the rank of Corporal. It is believed that Jacob participated in the Battle of Chicamanga, northern Tennessee, where his brother John Franklin was injured. Jacob deserted the Confederate Army at Knoxville, Tennessee, on December, 2, 1863.

Jacob is listed on "Rebel Deserters who have voluntarily taken and subscribed the oath of allegiance to the United States Government at Knoxville, Tenn., between Dec. 4 and 16, 1863, and, after confinement for a limited period, have been permitted to go to their homes when the same were situated within our lines, and in other cases were sent to Kentucky, to be there released." The list is dated December 16, 1863, and was signed by the Provost Marshall General of East Tennessee. NARA Box 231, Extrusion 38, Record 3048

NOTE: Jacob's parents left Tennessee in the fall of 1863.
