John LESAN, son of Mary (PIERCE) and Edmund LEASON/LESAN, was born at Boothbay, Lincoln County,
Maine. After his father's death in 1825, John worked as a fisherman and lumber foreman. John moved near Columbus, Ohio, in
1831. In the year of 1833, John moved to Licking County, Ohio, residing in the "Refugee Tract" of Liberty Township. He moved to
Osceola Grove, Illinois, on the Spoon River in 1837. John lost his farm because he was unable to raise the money to "prove
up" his claim. John moved to Knox County, Illinois in 1839; and Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, in 1860.
A member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, John served the congregation as a leader until 1835 when a
Free-Will Baptist Church was organized in 1835 at Elmira, Illinois. Joining the newly-founded church, John was appointed
as a Deacon of the church. On the night of June 27, 1860, a mob broke into Deacon John LESAN's home and threatened to lynch
him because he was operating a station on the Underground Railroad. John spoke freely against slavery and
had a grandson named for Owen LOVEJOY, the Abolitionist.
John became the second broommaker in Ringgold
County, Iowa, when he bought a broom machine from Ed HATCH in 1870, moving the machine to his son David's home where he
and David learned the trade. According to family legend, John did not allow his children to attend school, opting to have
them remain at home and make baskets for sale. After losing his wife, John's son Charles went bankrupt. John went back
to Maine where he purchased tickets for Charles and his nine children to come to Illinois by sea. They traveled from
Boston to New York, then up the Erie Canal where they crossed the Great Lakes to Illinois.

OBITUARY - JOHN LESAN
DIED -- At the residence of his son, George W. LESAN, in Mount Ayr township, December 4th, 1874, Mr. John
LESAN, aged 78 years and 4 months. He was born in Lincoln County, Maine, August 4th, 1796. He was converted and joined the

and was appointed leader, which position he held until the year 1835, when a Free-Will Baptist Society was organized.
He then joined his own church and continued a member of the same until the year 1839, when he moved to Knox County,
Illinois, where at once he became identified with the church. In 1860, he moved to Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa, and

the people of Mount Ayr to meet me in heaven." He was conscious until his spirit took its final departure from relation
and friends to become an inhabitant of heaven. God blessed his servant with an extension of the appointed time for man in
the earth.Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. For we

LESAN HOUSE
George W. LESAN founded the farming community of Lesanville, located approximately 5 miles east of
Mount Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa. Lesanville was located on the original farm Solomon LESAN obtained from the United
States government when he settled in Ringgold County in 1855. Lesanville was a stop on the CB&Q Railroad with the post office operating from
1884 to 1899. The community disappeared during the Great Depression. Today it is maintained as
the RAMSEY Farms, developed by California businessman Paul RAMSEY with assistance from VisionIowa and the Iowa Department
of Cultural Affairs. The LESAN farm house has been established as Leasanville Inn, a member of the Iowa Bed and
Breakfast Asssociation. Lesanville still has a school, church, and a cemetery known as Sweet Home Cemetery, sometimes
referred to as the Lesanville Cemetery. Paul RAMSEY is a LESAN descendant.
