THE ARMSTRONG FAMILY
Daniel Friel ARMSTRONG, son of William ARMSTRONG (1772-1800) and Catherine (FRIEL) ARMSTRONG, was born
May 7, 1797, Rockbridge County, Virginia. Daniel married on January 13, 1823, Harrison County, Virginia, to Sarah
NUTTER. Sarah was born circa 1801 in Virginia, the daughter of Thomas Jr. and Mary (MOREHEAD) NUTTER.
Daniel and Sarah settled in a log
cabin not far from Sarah's parents. After the birth of their eighth child in 1838, they left that cabin with an
ox-pulled cart, their eight children and the two sons of Daniel's brother, Thomas. THe ARMSTRONGS settled near
Marshall in
Clark County, Illinois. In 1855, they moved once again to Ringgold County, IA where they farmed 80 acres. Daniel
purchased additional land until he acquired 160 acres. Two of his sons farmed near by. Daniel and Sarah were the
parents of twelve children. Two of their sons, Wilson T. and James Harvey ARMSTRONG, died in the Civil War.
Daniel Friel ARMSTRONG died at the age of 87 from tuberculosis on November 6, 1884, Liberty Township of Ringgold
County, Iowa. He was interred at Woodland Cemetery, Monroe Township of Ringgold County, Iowa.
