Nicholas SALTZMAN,one of the first settlers of Ringgold County, and an active and enterprising farmer and stock-raiser of Poe Township, where he resides, on section 23, is a native of France, born in the year 1829, and a son of Nicholas and Barbara (GARBER) SALTZMAN (sic).

The parents lived in their native land, France, until March 1, 1853, when they embarked with their family in a sailing vessel, at Havre, and after a voyage of twenty-eight days landed in New York. From that city they proceeded to Buffalo, where they waited twenty-one days for a steamer to take them to Sandusky, Ohio, thence to Findlay, Ohio, where they remained two and a half years.

In November, 1855, Nicholas SALTZMAN, Jr., and four of his brothers came to Ringgold County, Iowa, when he located on his present farm, which, at that time, was an unbroken tract of prairie land. The parents subsequently came to Ringgold County, where the mother died November 9, 1867, aged sixty-four years. The father still makes his home in Ringgold County with his children.

Nicholas SALTZMAN, our subject, was married in 1859, to Miss Anna EGLEY, a native of France, and to this union have been born seven children - Ellen C., wife of H. C. SMITH, of Poe Township; Jacob, Simon, Nicholas, Clara, Margaret and Noah.

After marriage Mr. SALTZMAN remained on what is known as the old homestead. He has been very successful in his agricultural pursuits, and by his industry and good management he has accumulated 650 acres, all of which is now under fine cultivation, with a good residence and commodious barn, and out-buildings for the convenience of his stock.

He is quite extensively engaged in stock-raising in connection with his general farming, and is making a specialty of Norman horses and high-grade cattle, having at present 100 head of cattle on his farm. He is a thorough, practical farmer, and is classed among the substantial and self-made men of his township, having commenced life entirely without capital.

Nicholas SALTZMAN, of Poe Township, one of the first settlers of Ringgold County, reached his 80th birthday on Friday, July 24, 1909. The event was properly celebrated in the family and many relatives and friends enjoyed the occasion, and helped to make the aged ones happy.

Those present were, his brother Chris SALTZMAN and wife of Mount Ayr, J. C. SALTZMAN and three children of St. Paul, Minnesota, Simon SALTZMAN and family, Noah SALTZMAN and family, Henry GRIMON and family, Edith and Fay SMITH, granddaughters of Jamesport, Mo. Special friends graced the occasion.

Mr. SALTZMAN is a native of Nancy, France, born in 1828. In 1853, the family embarked at Havre for America and after a voyage of twenty-eight days, arrived in New York. Thence they went to Buffalo and thence to Sandusky, Ohio, and thence in 1855, to Ringgold County. He soon located on a large farm of 420 acres in Poe Township and still remains on the old homestead.

He was married to Miss Anna EGLEY, a native of France. They had seven children.

Mr. SALTZMAN has been noted as an industrious, economical and good common sense farmer and has in all respects been very successful.

He now lives in an independent and happy retirement and enjoys the respect of all friends and acquaintances.

NOTE: Nicholas SALTZMAN was born July 24, 1829, and died May 25, 1911. Anna (EGLEY) SALTZMAN was born August 6, 1839, and died February 24, 1910. Nicholas and Anna were interred at Oakland-Saltzman Cemetery, Ringold County, Iowa. Noah SALTZMAN died at the age of 5 days on February 14, 1900 with interment at Oakland-Saltzman Cemetery. Another son died at the age of 3 days on December 23, 1881 with interment at Oakland-Saltzman Cemetery.
