J. L. PATTERSON

J[ohn] L[amont] PATTERSON, farmer, section 19, Benton Township, was born in [Butler Township] Richland County, Ohio, July 20, 1849, son of William and Ann (LAWSON) PATTERSON. He was the youngest of three children. He was reared on the farm, and his early education was obtained in the common schools. Later he attended school at Oberlin.

He was married April 13, 1876, to Miss Rowena (sic) HUFFMAN, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ann (FERRELL) HUFFMAN. He resided in Richland County until 1877, and that year was spent in Colorado.

In the spring [April] of 1878 he came to Ringgold County, and purchased a farm in Benton Township of Henry C. YOUNG. The farm contains 178 acres of land, mostly rich bottom land, on the west fork of Grand River. It is well cultivated and well improved. He has a comfortable house, good out-buildings for stock and grain, a good orchard, and everything about the place shows thrift and enterprise. He is located one and a half miles northwest of Delphos.

Mr. and Mrs. PATTERSON have two children - Floyd, born September 2, 1879, and Zella, born October 10, 1881.

Politically Mr. PATTERSON is a Republican. He has been a member of the Board Central Committeemen for Benton Township four years. He takes an active interest in any enterprise that will benefit the community, and is recognized as one of the leading men of the county. Postoffice, Delphos.

Ann (LAWSON) PATTERSON was born July 9, 1818, Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and married October 24, 1844, Richland County, Ohio, to William PATTERSON, born 1815, Scotland, and died June 30, 1851, Clear Creek Township of Ashland County, Ohio.

Benjamin HUFFMAN was born in 1817, and died at the age of 55 years in 1871, with interment at Ashland Cemetery, Richmond County, Ohio. Mary Ann (FERRELL) HUFFMAN died at the age of 76 in 1891 and was interred beside Benjamin.

John Lamont and Roena (HUFFMAN) PATTERSON retired from farming and moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa, January 1, 1896. They moved to Neosho, Missouri, in November of 1906. Roena (HUFFMAN) PATTERSON was born December 18 1850, Sandusky County, Ohio, and died December 26, 1909, Neosho, Newton County, Missouri. John Lamont PATTERSON died August 16, 1919 while visiting friends and relatives in Minnesota. Roena and John were interred at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Neosho, Missouri. John and Roena were the parents of three children:

1) Floyd E. PATTERSON
    born circa Sep 1879, Benton Twp., Ringgold Co. IA; died Circa 1930, Denver CO
    married Edna NICHOLS; 2 children
2) Zella A. PATTERSON
    born Oct 1881, Ringgold Co. IA
    married Victor Gray NEWTON
                 born 21 Apr 1880, Ringgold Co. IA; died 11 Dec 1950, Chickasha, Grady Co. OK
3) Chester A. PATTERSON
    born, Oct 1890, Ringgold Co. IA

Additional information from family:

John Lamont PATTERSON married second on 14 February 1912 in Chicago to Lizzie M. (EGLOFF) HUNT (Maria Elizabeth). Lizzie was born 25 March 1858, Manchester, Delaware Co., IA; died 21 May 1929, Nebraska City, Otoe Co., Nebraska.

John and Lizzie lived together in Neosho until John's death on 19 August 1919. No children.

At the time of John's death he and Lizzie were visiting her brother, Wm. J. EGLOFF at his lake cabin near Park Rapids, Todd Township, Hubbard County, Minnesota. MN.

The Mount Ayr Record News reported on 20 Aug 1919 that "Mr. PATTERSON had been enjoying his usual health and death came suddenly and without warning".

Lizzie and her first husband Sam J. HUNT are buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Mt.Ayr.
