Mobley Named One of Iowa's 100 Great Nurses
Each year since 2005, 100 nurses across the state have been recognized by medical and community leaders in the 100
Great Iowa Nurses program. This year [2010] Amy MOBLEY, RN, CHPN, clinical resource nurse with Hospice of Central
Iowa, has been selected as on of these top professionals. MOBLEY was chosen from 470 nominations for her outstanding
dedication to the nursing field, her patients, and to the nurses whom she mentors. "I am flattered to have been
selected for my efforts in such a rewarding vocation," MOBLEY said. "Each day I feel it's also an honor for me to service our
patients and families." MOBLEY, along with the honorees was recognized at the group's sixth annual statewide
event held May 2 to coincide with National Nurses Week. Nominees are reviewed by 21 former recipients from across
the state and a re determined for final selection by representatives from the Iowa Hospital Association, Iowa
Nurses Association, Iowa Nurses Foundation and the University of Iowa College of Nursing. In her role with
Hospice of Central Iowa, MOBLEY assists with day-to-day management tasks and acts as a clinical resource for
the team, enabling the best quality of care for patients and their families while ensuring those in the community
who could benefit from hospice services are being reached and educated on their care options. MOBLEY has been a
nurse with Hospice of Central Iowa for seven years. She earned her certified hospice and palliative nursing
accreditation - a requirement for the role - through the National Board for Certification of Hospice and
Palliative Nurses in 2003 and recertified in 2007. Hospice of Central Iowa is the only hospice in the area to support
this certification of its staff, demonstrating its commitment to excellence and to providing quality of life.
"Amy well exceeds the call of duty and deserves to be recognized for her contributions to the field," said Amy
SHERMAN, RN, BNS, Hospice of Central Iowa regional director. One example of demonstrating MOBLEY'S compassion and
commitment to her patients occurred when one of her patients was receiving palliative radiation for pain
management and the facility where he had been receiving treatments flooded. MOBLEY assisted the patient and his wife
in making arrangements to get the radiation at the nearest alternate location. She worked with her team and
Hospice of Central Iowa Foundation to provide gasoline and night's hotel accommodations so the patient would not have
to travel the 200-mile round trip in one day. MOBLEY knew she wanted to become a nurse after losing her mother to
cancer at age nine. "Losing my mom really opened my eyes to a lot of things - especially with hospice care. Hospice
Hospice care would've been a wonderful service to have, but it wasn't widely available at that time." After
earning her nursing degree from Southwestern Community College in Creston, she worked in hospital/acute care
and in long-term care settings. "When I was working in long-term care, I became familiar with Hospice of
Central Iowa providers," MOBLEY said. Seeing what they were doing for the patients is what prompted me to want to go in that direction." When asked about what she
most enjoys about her job, MOBLEY responded, "Just being able to help the patients be comfortable and providing
that care at a very important time in their lives." When not caring for those in her community, MOBLEY enjoys
spending time outdoors camping and playing softball with her husband Greg and their three daughters, Madison,
Emma and Gracie.
