DR. ROY EUGENE FELL
Dr. Roy Eugene FELL was born on July 27, 1923, Walnut, Iowa, the son of Glen and Gladys FELL and a brother of Max who
was born in 1918. Dr. FELL grew up on the farm and attending school, participating in football, basketball, the
Glee Club, school plays, and played the trumpet in the school band. He graduated from Walnut High School in 1940.
After attending 18 months of classes at Iowa State College, his grades were not high enough to enter into veterinary
college. He sought employment in Napa, California with the Basalt Rock Shipyards, spending two years building mine layers
and destroyers. He then joined the U.S. Navy. After boot camp in Idaho, Dr. FELL was sent to Panama to guard the Panama Sea
Frontier at the Naval Base there. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Dr. FELL returned to his parental home and
worked on the farm. In 1950 Dr. FELL returned to college, earning a B.A. from Drake University, Des Moines. He
was admitted to the Still Osteopathic College, graduating in 1954 with an internship at Des Moines General Hospital and
Broadlawns Hospital. Dr. FELL married Frances Ann THOMPSON from Clarion Iowa, in 1950. They became the parents of six
children: Fay (FELL) HOWIE, Paul, John, Eric, Mary (FELL) ROBINSON, and Jim. In 1954, the FELLS came to Mount Ayr
where he worked with Dr. MOFFETT. After a few years, Dr. FELL built his own office building at 207 North Taylor Street.
During his career, Dr. FELL brought numerous babies into this world. He often took his own children with him when
making evening house calls to his patients. Dr. FELL was highly regarded not only for his bedside manner but his
concern with his patients' problems, joys, and concerns.
