The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization for Union soldiers of the Civil War. Iowa organized a State Department of the G.A.R. which compiled a list of all the G.A.R. posts in Iowa and within each post created individual 5x8 inch cards for each post member. These cards included not only military information, but also biographical information. The cards are available online at Familysearch.org - Iowa, Grand Army of the Republic Membership Records 1861-1949.
