Introduction and use of the Index (Links listed below)
The 1850 census of Polk Co. IA has 752 heads of family and other miscellaneous names. In attempting to discover the maiden names of the women which are listed required the searching of many Polk Co. history books, marriage records and the like. Approximately 287 names have been discovered so far. There remains many others to be discovered.
Some of the maiden names come from my book "FREEL-WILSON GENEALOGY".
The book is on file at the Iowa Genealogical Society located in Des Moines. IA.
To find the maiden name of the person you are looking for and you know the name of the husband go first to the male index (page 20). The index will give the name of the wife and the page it is found in the MAIDEN NAME INDEX (page 2). Once there it will give the source where the maiden name was found. The number following the maiden name is the number in the 1850 census of Polk Co. IA which is found at the back of this document. The symbols for the source can be found on page 14.
There are two sections to the Polk Co. marriages. Polk Co, IA Marriages (PLKm) and Miscellaneous Marriages (Mr) of other Counties of IA and other States in the 1850 census of Polk Co. IA. Some sources may not give the marriage date or place but just gives their relationship or mention the place of marriage.
It should be noted a few names have been found with different spellings in different records. A few examples are the surname REESE is that is found as REES. Also BURKE is found as BURK. RICE is found as VICE or the opposite.
