Nothing is known about my 4th great grandfather prior to his enlistment Oct. 12, 1863 for a term of 3 years. From census records, he emmigrated from Germany in 1849 at age 14. Some family member wrote in a letter, that his father was G. E. Stader, but I have not been able to prove this. His age on his enlistment paperwork says 24, height: 5 feet 2 inches, Complexion: Light, Eyes: Blue, Hair: Light. Where born: Baden Banden Germany, Occupation: cooper. He enlisted in New Oreleans, La. Infantry under the name of Ahard Starder.
Muster RecordsCompany F, 1 Reg't New Orleans Infantry show he was present for muster July & August 1864 under the name of Earhart Starder. In May of 1865, he was absent without leave. Records show that Arhard Stearder mustered out on June 1, 1866 at age 26, after being given his final payment of $75.00
On May 1, 1888 Charles E. Stader with an alias of Ahard Starder filed for a pension. The interesting thing is that if he was born in 1839, he would have been 10 at immigration, and only 20 when he enlisted. The record for his immigration came from the 1900 Census. Also, in the 1910 census his immigrations was listed as 1852.
Pension Record
2 years after his discharge in 1866, he shows up in Chillicothe, Peoria County Illinois, getting married on Dec 24th 1868, to Rachel Ann Wilkinson, daughter of Phineas R. Wilkinson and Mary (Slaughter) Wilkinson; b. 3 May 1852 in Chillicothe, Peoria Co. Illinois d. 24 Oct. 1936.
In the 1870 census for Akron, Peoria Co., Illinois, Charles is listed as a farm laborer. The birth of his first child Mary Sabrina happened that year. Also born in Illinois are Sophia Ann, b.in 1872, Julius (Jude), in 1874, and Alphonso in 1876. Mary died in 1873.
In 1878, William was born in Iowa, and the 1880 census for Des Moines, Polk Co. Iowa, shows the family living at 511 Third St. His job is listed as a cooper. In the 1882 Bushnell's Directory the family is listed on 7th corner of Maury, and Carrie May (my great grandmother) is born.
The family continues to grow, with the birth in 1885 of Edna Grant, followed in 1887 by Margaret E. Sometime between 1887 and the 1890 Des Moines Directory, Charles and family move to Saylorville, owning their first home at the corner of 2nd & Englewood. Charles is listed in this directory as a laborer. 1890 also brings the birth of Rosella. She would die in 1893 of pneumonia. 1892 brings the death of Edna Grant, and 1894 is the birth of Bertha, the last of Charles and Rachel's children.
The death of son William in 1896 of peritonitis caused a bit of a stir. William was aged 19, and was working for the Des Moines Daily News.
DEATH OF WM. STADER. August 11, 1896 Brief Illness of n Daily News Employee Wm. Stader. aged 19, died at 12:10 last night at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Stader of Second and Saylorville avenue, of peritonitis. The illness of Mr. Stader was only of two days duration. He was employed at the Daily. News office,- being a helper in the stereotyping room. Saturday evening he left the building feeling all right. he went home and filled up a tub with water and took a brief nap then took a buggy ride. About midnight he was taken ill and no doubt the chill from the water affected his ailment. He grew worse and suffered greatly all day Sunday and up to within half an hour of his death last night, -when he became easier and then unconscious. He told his parents Monday afternoon that it was no use doctoring him that they might, as well open the door and let him go. Deceased leaves a sister and two brothers, Alonso and Julian. He had worked three weeks for The News and was a genial boy of quiet disposition. He had previously set type at the Carter & Hussey job printing office. The funeral will be held at 10 a. m. tomorrow from the residence, Rev. C.. H. Steams officiating.
I found it rather odd that the obituary only listed a sister and 2 brothers, when there was Sophia, who lived 100 years, Julius lived to 55, Alphonso to 69, Carrie to age 71 and Bertha who lived for 79 years. By the time of William's death, Jude and Alphonso had moved for a short time to Peoria Co. Illinois and started their own families.
1896 brought changes to the Stader family, Charles, while working as a cooper and laborer, was also a member of the G.A.R. An article in the Des Moines Daily Newss, May 27, 1901 has a headline "GRAVES OF VETERANS LOST"
Charles E. Stader of G. A. R. Committee Seeks Information. The G. A. R. committees have been unable to find the graves of the following old soldiers: Jas. Brineger, J. O. Blaine, Albert Dodd, Geo. Estell, C. D. Folsom, S. H. Fulkerd, A. Monford, W. W. Reed, Rollin Bighand, Geo. Wallace. If any relative know the location of their graves they are requested to notify Chas. E. Stader, who will be at the cemetery Tuesday from 1 p. m. until 5. m. at soldiers' plat.
This is also about the time that Charles began working the following jobs: a soliciting agent, in the police lab, park police officer, road supervisor, custodian of City Gun Club. He also began purchasing homes, among the addresses, Sailorville Ave & NE corner 2nd, 111 Sheridan Ave, corner of 2nd & Englewood, 205 Sheridan Ave. are the ones he bought for his family as they grew up and moved out of Charles & Rachel's home. In all he owned and rented nearly 20 homes.
Charles passed away Nov 16, 1916 at age 77 at his home, not from his heart disease, but due to a cerebral hemmorhage, or stroke he suffered Nov 8th. He is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Saylor Township, with his wife, Rachel who died Oct. 24, 1936.
