• Shirley 7 Dec 2000 (SARGENT) I am decended from the Alberti Sargent family of Fonda, Iowa. Am interested in any information on this family. Alberti married Lydia Stephens; their son was Holly Glenn Sargent, my grandfather. Glenn had several brothers and sisters. One was Louisa who married Dr. Conard and they taught at Grinnell College. Any information would be appreciated.

Sons of Christiana Emery and John Smith: (3) Daniel Smith married Minnie Elizabeth Alexander.Daniel and Minnie had three children, Adena Alice, Zelbert, and Elizabeth. (4) Sylvester married Augusta Chapel. Sylvester and Augusta had two daughters, Pearl and Mabel Lillian. (5) Christiana and John had another child, Eleanora who married Alfred Nicholas. One of their daughters, Addie married John Roberts and lived in Rolfe area many years. If you know any of these people, I would love to talk to you. Thanks in advance.

• Tom Youngberg 27 Nov 2000 (ERICKSON) I am inquiring about Oscar Edwin Erickson who was a resident of Laurens,Ia. He was a private secratary to congressman Fred Gillette of the 10th district and later elected to the U.S. Senate in 1936. Mr. Erickson married my grandfather's sister Eda Elizabeth Youngberg on May 1,1915. The couple also had an adopted son named Floyd McCabe who was killed in action in the Pacific during WW2. I am trying to find out the birth and death dates of this couple and theirson and where they are buried. Thank you.

• Frances Steckelberg 5 Nov 2000 (STECKELBERG) I'm looking for any information and/or stories on the Henry Christain Steckelberg family and his children who moved to Pocahontas County in 1868. Henry Christian and his wife Sophia Speekers or Specker settled in Bellville Twp. with there 7 children. His son Henry C.G.F. settled in Lizard Twp with his wife CAtherine "Lizzie" Leist, whose parents also lived in the same twp. Any info will be appreciated especially on Henry Christian's children and their decendants. I also have information on my lineage to these people. I am the g-g-great granddaughter of Henry Christian George Frederick Steckelberg and Catherine Leist.

Ridgway, in a wagon-making business in Pomeroy. I am also interested in any information about the general area in the mid to late 19th century. Is there a history of Pocahontas County? • SHERI COOPER 29 Oct 2000 (JONES, SEVERENCE) Hello from Perris,Calif I'm looking for my Severance family. Lucy Severance was born March 3, 1857 Wampacco, Wisconsin and she died at Highmore South Dakota Dec 11, 1945. While she was a small child her parents moved to McGregor Iowa where she spent the remainder of her girlhood days. On September 26, 1873 she was united in marriage to Thomas S.Jones. For several years they made their home on a homestead near Alta Iowa and later in Laurens Iowa. They came to South Dakota in 1910 and located at Wessington Springs where they made their home until the time of Mr Jones death. In 1923 Lucy(Severance) Jones went to live with her sister Clara Severance who married Isacc Kiler in Barnston,Gage Co Nebraska. After two years she went back to South Dakota in Hyde Co to live with her son. Lucy Severance's father was Benjamin Franklin Severance He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Britton She was born Jan 7,1825 Steubenville Ohio,and she died Aug 2, 1908, Barnston,Gage Co Nebraska. After Benjamin Franklin Severance died she married John Kiler, Lucy Severance's father in law. John was born 1816 and died1889. Lucy Severance's sisters and brothers were: Emma, born Feb 12,1851;Crawford Co Wisconsin and died May 18,1929 McCook Nebraska. Her husband William Henry Smith was born June 2, 1838, Mentor Lake Co, Ohio; son of Horacia Smith and Adelia Claugh. Phimelia (Phila)Severance born Dec 27, 1852 Iowa died Nov 30, 1933 Beatrice,Gage Co. Nebraska and my great grandfather Edwin W.Severance born 1861 McGregor,Iowa. He married Clara Neumann.Tthanks and hope to hear from someone.

• Dawnee Phay McCulley 29 Oct 2000 (KENNEDY, SANBORN) Is there anyone that would be willing to help me locate death records for William Kennedy and his wife, Judith Ann Sanborn? William and Judith were living in Williams Township in April 1869. They later moved to Fonda. I know that they were both still alive in 1875. I am trying to find a probate record, a grave, anything! Thanks in advance if you can help. PS William and Judith had the following children: William, Thomas, Mary, Carrie, George and Emily. I am also interested in locating them in census records. I do not have access to the 1870 census for Iowa. Judiths brother, George Sanborn was also living nearby. William was born abt 1827 in Ireland and Judith Ann was born on March 19, 1840 in Jefferson, Jefferson, Wisconsin.

• Shirley Gillespie 30 Sept 2000 (SARGENT) My grandfather was HOLLY GLENN SARGENT born in Fonda, Iowa. His father was Alberti, Sargent son of Americus Sargent. Am looking for any information on the SARGENT family. Am planning a trip to Fonda in about 2 years and am anxious to learn anything about Fonda, the Sargents who lived there, etc.

• Mike Collins 23 Sept 2000 (COLLINS) I am trying to find information on the Collins Family, according to a photo copy of a text book "Pioneer History Of Pocahontas County, Iowa" there was a James Hickey and a Hugh Collins that had selected claims in Lizard Township in February 1855. The problem I am finding is I can not find records of this other than the photo copy from the text book, and thought you might be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you.

• Barbara 23 Sept 2000 (BENJAMIN) Need to verify my grandfather Charles Mert Benjamin born 5/26/1872. Death certificate says in was born in Council Bluffs. What ever avenue I take I come up against a brick wall. His parents are Albert Rial and Alice Josephine Clark Benjamin. They married in NY in 1868. They left Iowa by 1874 and homesteaded in Polk, Nebraska. If you can give me any assistance, information or directions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Jan Christensen 16 Sept 2000 (JONES) I am looking for information on Hayes Benjamin JONES and his wife Ida Melvina McCLARY. They resided in the town of Emmetsburg, Pocohontas County, Iowa. Two of their children were born in Emmetsburg: Ozema Cecil JONES b. 28 Oct. 1888 and Lloyd Elmo JONES b. 3 May 1886. The family was located in Curlew, Iowa from 1881 thru 1883. I do not know exactly when they moved to Emmetsburg nor when they left. I believe they went to Des Moines after Emmetsburg. When they were in Des Moines, Hayes Benjamin Jones was listed as a physician and dentist. I do not know where he got his medical training. Could it have been in Emmetsburg? Any information you have on family will be appreciated.

• Mona Gauger 10 Sept 2000 (SHERMAN) I am trying to find my g-grandparents and grandmother SHERMAN Perry H. Sherman and his wife, Jerusha and daughter Alice lived in Rolfe around 1890 to 1900. Perry and Alice are buried there. (I have a picture of the grave marker but no indication of the Cemetary. Some of the SHERMANs may have operated a store since I have a letter from Alice to her sister Nell saying she misses the store. Alice was born in Rolfe in 1872 and died April 1900. Perry died around 1908. Thanks.

Elmer left Gilmore City, date ?, and relocated in Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, where has died. Married my gGrandmother, Eva Spooner(?) Hills in Storm Lake (?) • Nate Steiner 1 Sept 2000 (STEINER) I am beginning to research my origins. So far, I am at a bit of a dead end. My grandfather, Eugene Joseph Steiner was from Varina Iowa. I am not sure if he was born there or not, but his parents may be buried there. They both died in 1919 during the flu epidemic. I do not know their names. My grandfather had an older brother although I do not know his name. He had at least two sisters, Josephine and Gladys. The children were distributed amongst relatives, and raised separately. Perhaps he moved to Varina following the death of his patents. I do know that Jo's married name was Bierworth, although I am unsure of Gladys' married name, yet I believe she lived, and possibly died in Pocahontas. My grandfathers date of birth was September 27, 1909. I will ask my father if he knows any more, but I don't believe he does, and unfortunately, my grandmothers health is failing and her memory is lost. I would appreciate any information that you may be able to provide, and as I discover more, I will gladly relay any findings. Thank you very much.

• K'Lynn 19 Aug 2000 (SHIMON, SERNETT) I'm hoping that some of my Shimon and Sernett relatives are on this list. From what I can tell, a lot of them still live in Pocahontas County (Pocahontas, Rolfe, Laurens). Calvin Archie Stoner (father) and Mabel Louise Clemons (mother) moved to Oregon from the Rolfe area during W.W.II. I'm interested in more information about these familles, especially the correct spelling of the Sernett (Bohemian) surname. Census records have it spelled as 'Sernett' or 'Srnetz'. If any of the below names look familiar, please email me directly. • Dawnee Phay McCulley 19 Aug 2000 (KENNEDY) I am looking for information on William Kennedy born in Ireland circa 1829. He married Judith Ann Sanborn in 1860 in Wisconsin. (Judith Ann was the daughter of William Sanborn and Mary Page) They moved to Iowa, settling in Williams Township, Calhoun County in 1869. They had children in Fonda, Pocahontis County. I don't know how long they stayed in Iowa. Their last child was born in Fonda in 1875. Their children are as follows: William Elsworth Kennedy born March 09, 1862;Thomas Kennedy born abt 1863;Mary Kennedy born abt 1864;Carrie Kennedy born abt 1866; George Albert Kennedy born abt 1868 (named after Judith Ann's brother George Sanborn, the editor and owner of the Fonda Times);Emily T. Kennedy born abt 1875. William Elsworth later moved to Montana.. perhaps his parents did too? Any information on any of the above people appreciated.Thanks.

Specifically I am trying to research my Great Grandfather JENS ANDRES Frokjaer. It might be spelled Frokjer without a A. The information I have is that he was born on March 14, 1912 in that area And his parents were Also DAD-Jens Frokjer and Mom-Anne or Annie Marie Pederson or Peterson or Pedersen or Petersen. I cant find one exact spelling. My question is I cant really find out information about my great grandfather and his family on regular ancestry searches and was hoping that some local information was around there. if so any information about any Frokjer would be greatly appreciated. Kephart was born 13 Mar. 1870 in Fonda, Iowa according to his death certificate.He is buried in Floyd Cem. in Sioux City, Iowa. His parents were Jacob Kephart and Louis Tharr. Any information would be appreciated.

• Dawnee Phay McCulley 31 July 2000 (KENNEDY) I am looking for any information on William Kennedy born Abt. 1827 in Ireland, married Judith Ann Sanborn who was born March 19, 1840 in Jefferson, Wisconsin. They married in Wisconsin about 1860 and had their first three children there, namely William Elsworth Kennedy born March 09, 1862, Thomas Kennedy, Mary Kennedy (nick name Matie); they moved to Fonda, Iowa and had Carrie Kennedy, George Albert Kennedy (nickname Bert), and Emily T. Kennedy. I am sketchy about dates. I know that George Albert was born about 1875 and Emily was born afterwards. So, I assume they ended up in Fonda sometime between 1864-1874. (Not very helpful) I found all of this in a letter to my grandmother from Emily T., but it had no dates. Judith Ann was the daughter of William Sanborn and Mary Page. This is my brick wall as there are a million William Kennedy's! I just found this lead to Fonda.. have been researching only Wisconsin until now.Any help much appreciated!

• Steve Cox 17 June 2000 (KREI/MEINS/BUENING) I'm trying to find some information about a woman who married my great-grandfather, John Krei, in 1920. Her name was Elizabeth Meins or Buening. One surname is either her maiden name and the other is a name from a previous marriage. They were married in Sioux City but some ancestors insist she was from Pocahontas. They would have both been in their 60s when they married and were divorced in 1937. Any information about this lady would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Jean Oxley 7 June 2000 (OXLEY) According to other family members, Josephine OXLEY married Julius WHITE January 7, 1869 in Rolfe, IA. However, I have found in the "Births 1880-1888" that a Julius WHITE's wife is listed as Mary E. HANSEL. Further down the page is listed a Josephine OXBY( should this be OXLEY?) wife of Herman WIEGMAN gave birth to a daughter. I am trying to find who JosephineOXLEY really married in 1869.
