The first Clarey to settle in Akron, Iowa, was Thomas F. Clarey born in 1868. He came to Akron in 1892, and settled on a farm five miles southeast of town. In 1895 Tom married Mary Boden from South Dakota. They had three sons: Harry born in 1896, died in 1898; John, born in 1899, married Esther McCorkell in 1923 and had ten children. John, Esther and their children lived and farmed in Merrill, Iowa. The third son of Thomas F. & Mary Clarey was Clifford, born in 1902.
