Golden Wedding
Mr. And Mrs. T. Kloster Host 200 Friends on 50th Anniversary
Mr. And Mrs. Thorvald Kloster, well known residents of Fredonia township for 44 years, will observe their golden wedding anniversary, Tuesday, February 20, 1940, by holding an open house from 2 to 5 p.m.
Still in robust health the Klosters are very active in farming, and still operate the 160 acres with very little help.
The days activities will start with services at Gethsemane Lutheran Church with Rev. Alvin Petersen of Lincoln, Neb., their former pastor, in charge of the services. Following the church service over 200 relatives and personal friends will attend the dinner.
Mr. And Mrs. Kloster were both born in Skodborg, Denmark. He was born on December 19, 1867 and is 72 years of age. Mr. Kloster came here in 1886 after receiving his schooling in his native land, and started farming in the vicinity.
Mrs. Kloster was born on April 27, 1871, and is almost 69 years of age. She came to this country with her parents in 1883 and settled on a farm in Fredonia township, where she received her schooling.
On February 20, 1890 the couple were united in marriage at a private home south of Oyens. They took up farming east of Oyens on the Tierney farm, where they remained for six years before purchasing the home place in Fredonia township in 1896.
Besides being an active and progressive farmer of this county Mr. Kloster also took an interest in the political field. He said he was a “staunch democrat”. During the years 1913 to 1923 he served three terms as a member of the board of supervisors. He also was a member of the old age assistance board for two years. Before being elected to the board he served 8 years as trustee of Fredonia township.
At present he is a director of the co-operative elevator at Oyens; a director of the Farmers Co-op creamery at Orange City and president of the West Iowa Telephone Co. at Remsen.
Mr. and Mrs. Kloster are charter members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Mrs. Kloster is a member of the Dorcas aid society and they both take an active parat in church work.
The following children will be present at the golden wedding celebration tomorrow: Jens Kloster, Oyens; Mrs. Axel Petersen and Mrs. Hans Miller of Fredonia township; Mrs. Niels Petersen and Mrs. Ole Andersen of Le Mars; Mrs. Frank Kunath, America township; Nis Kloster, Fredonia township; Mrs. Harry Wallinga, Sheldon; and Niels Kloster, Fredonia. There are also 26 grandchildren.
Mr. Kloster received a cable from a brother, Jens, living in Horsen, Denmark, this morning, sending congratulations from the whole family.
