Walker long-time city businessman
Donald Walker, 65, longtime Clarinda businessman, died early
Saturday morning [July 28, 1973] at Municipal Hospital following a short
illness.
Mr
Walker had lived in Clarinda for
over 40 years and had operated the Walker Plumbing Co until his retirement less
than a month ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
He
was born Jan 23, 1908, at Clearmont, Mo, the son of William and Dora Ellen
Golay Walker. On Aug 17, 1929, he
was married to Helen Honaker
who survives.
Besides
his wife of the home at 110 East Logan, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs
Ralph (Donna) Johnson of Clarinda
and five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Four sisters are Mrs Nellie
Elrod of Council Bluffs, Mrs
Nancy Drain of Ravenwood, Mo, Mrs
Paul (Iva) Whipp of Wichita, Kan,
and Mrs Guy (Irene) Fults of Clarinda. He was preceded in death by one son
who died in infancy.
Funeral services for Mr
Walker were held this Monday morning
at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Lester Greenwood officiating. H E Richardson
and Alan Jackson were soloists and Norma Kramer organist. Casket bearers were
Don Winger, Gary Larabee, Perry Antrim, Dennis Drain, Earl Leakey and Craig
Larabee. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Mrs Wm Biggerstaff was Free Methodist minister
Mrs
William F (Mabel Marie) Biggerstaff,
68, who served as minister of the Free Methodist Church here for two years, died
Saturday at the Osteopathic Hospital in Kansas City where she had been a
patient for a week.
Services
will be held at 1 pm Tuesday at
Walker Funeral Home with Rev Earl Melton and Rev Jack DuBrava
officiating. Burial will be in the Mt Zion Cemetery near Tabor. Memorials may
be made to a scholarship fund
in memory of Mrs Biggerstaff.
Mrs
Biggerstaff was the oldest child
of Thomas W [illiam] and Ettie Older Bownes and was born Dec 28, 1905 on a farm near Athelstan.
The family moved to Tabor in the fall of 1918 where Mabel enrolled at the Missionary Bible School. She was
converted Jan 22,1920, at the
Faith Home Church and helped in Sunday school in the area under the
American Sunday School.
On
May 23,1924, she was united in marriage to William Franklin Biggerstaff. To the union were born nine children, a daughter
dying in infancy.
She
worked with her husband from the time of their marriage on Free Methodist
circuits in the West Iowa Conference, serving at Mt Ayr, Boone, Coon Rapids,
Sac City, Gravity and Sioux City. He served six years as Evangelist and she
served at Ruthven.
After
the death of her husband, Dec 14, 1960, at Sioux City, she served the
conference year out and moved to Ogden for six years, then to Clarinda for two
years. She was womans Missionary delegate twice for the General Conference.
Her
children include Willis of
Olathe, Kans, Ronald of
Cottage Grove, Minn, Donald of
Arvada, Colo, Darlene Switzer,
Loveland, Colo, Mildred Pazzato,
Woodbridge, Va, Greta Simon
and Norma Rosewall of Des
Moines, and Hazel Reusch,
Kansas City, Mo.
Additional
survivors are 27 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother, Vilas
Bownes of Clarinda, a sister, Mrs
Viola Elmore of Seattle, Wash,
and her father, Thomas Bownes
of Clarinda.

Mrs
Ralph (Vivian) Andrew, 74, of New
Market died Monday [November 5, 1973] at Colonial Manor in Corning, and
services will be at 2 pm Friday at the New Market Methodist Church with the Rev
Charles Bissinger officiating. Burial will be in the Guss cemetery.
Visitation
is this Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.
Casket bearers at the services will be Laurence Andrew, Warren Andrew, Dean
Anderson, Bill Pratt, Wesley Glassgow and Otis Wood.
Mrs
Andrew was born Nov 24, 1898, in
Page County, the oldest daughter of H[arley] C and Maude Negley McCoy.

of Shenandoah; a daughter, Mrs Dale (Doris) Anderson of Martelle; two brothers, Ted McCoy of Villisca and Alva of Spokane, Wash; sisters Mrs Harry (Mabel)

Mrs Cline died in Kansas City
Funeral
services for Mrs Morva [Taylor] Cline, 77, of Kansas City were held Saturday [May 19th] at
Walker Funeral Home with Carl Cummings of Bedford officiating.
Mrs
Cline died Wednesday evening [May
16, 1973] at her home in Kansas City following a long illness. Mrs Zella
Ridenour was organist and Jim McAlpin soloist. Casket-bearers were Eldon
Taylor, Ivan Taylor, Marvin Borden, Milo Borden, Harold Foster, Jim McAlpin and
Verlin Cade.
Burial
was in the Dallas Center Cemetery north of New Market.

Donald Williams died after vehicle crash
Donald
E Williams, 64, was dead on
arrival at the Municipal Hospital Sunday noon following an accident near his
farm home north of Clarinda. His car was ditched, a heart attack believed to
have caused him to lose control.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at the Rose Hill United Methodist Church,
with Rev Lester Greenwood and Rev Carl Cummings officiating. Burial will be in
the church cemetery.
The
vocalist will be Melvin Royer, accompanied by Mrs William Kramer. Ushers will
be Steve and Dennis Williams. In charge of the register book will be Mrs Victor
Pollert.
Casket
bearers will be Arnold and Rennig Fastenau, Victor Pollert, Don Miller, Calvin
Williams and Clemmeth Crussell.
He
was born Aug 5, 1909, at Clarinda, the son of George and Maggie Apley Williams. He attended rural schools and graduated from Clarinda High School.
He
was married to Euna Newberry
on April 27, 1935, at Clarinda. They farmed north of Clarinda. Mrs Williams died in April of 1959. Since that time he and his
mother have lived together on the family farm.
He
was a member of the Rose Hill United Methodist Church, Nodaway Lodge No 140
AF&AM Chapter 29 Royal Arch Masons of Clarinda and Tyre Council No 32 at
Shenandoah.
He
is survived by three daughters, Mrs Francis (Reta) Diggs and Mrs Wallace (Geraldine) Klakken of Gravity and Mrs Jim (Kristin) Teachout of Stanton; his mother, Mrs Maggie Williams of Clarinda, six grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs
Basil (Alberta) Mclntyre of Burlington Jct. Mo, and Mrs Ruth Morrow of Van Nuys, Cal.
Masonic
services by Nodaway Lodge No 140 AF&AM will be conducted this Monday
evening at 8 pm, at the Lavelle Funeral Home, with Calvin Luther as worshipful
master.
Memorials
may be directed to the Rose Hill United Methodist Church.

Mrs J J Anderson died at hospital
Services
for Mrs J J (Hilda) Anderson,
83, of Clarinda were being held this Monday afternoon at the Lavelle Funeral
Home, with the Rev Cecil Latta and the Rev Clarence Moore officiating. Burial
was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Shenandoah.
The
vocalist was Mrs Maurice Rarick, accompanied by Mrs Gene Garrett. The casket
bearers were her grandsons and included, Joe, Carl, Matthew and Dean
Anderson, Randall Garrett and Merrill
Larson.
She
died Friday evening [November 2, 1973] at the Municipal Hospital, after being
hospitalized for 12 days.
Born
Nov 13,1890, at Essex, the daughter of Olaf and Anna Johnson Sundberg, she was reared in the Essex area where she was
graduated from high school.
She
taught school in the rural area there for five years and was married to Joseph
J [okin] Anderson on March 10,
1914, at Omaha, Neb. They lived at Sharpsburg for five years after their
marriage then moved to a farm north of New Market, moving to Clarinda in 1968,
to 420 N 19th.
She
was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarinda.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother. She is survived by [her] husband,
three sons, Duane of New
Market, Ronald of Hutchinson,
Kan, and Dale of Martelle; two
daughters, Mrs Kenneth (Lois) Garrett of Clarinda and Mrs Wayne (Elynor) Kerr of Rockville, Md, 12 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.

Albert Glines' sister died
Mrs
Laura Mae Scott, 79, sister of Albert
Glines of Clarinda, died Tuesday
[June 19, 1973] at the hospital in Maryville and services for her were held
this Thursday at Price Funeral Home with burial in the Hopkins cemetery.
She
had had a brief illness, hospitalized only a day. She is survived by a son, Frank
Scott of Maryville and sister, Mrs
John Broadstone of McFall. Her
husband, Sherman D Scott, died
in January of 1948.

Stephen Fine died from gun wounds
Stephen
Clem Fine, 20, of Braddyville
died Tuesday night [May 8, 1973] at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital from
injuries received last week in a gun accident.
He was a 1971 graduate of
New Market High School and had been engaged in farming near Braddyville. He was
born Aug 22, 1952 at Maryville.
Services
will be at 2 pm Friday at Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins, Mo,
with Rev Cecil Latta of Clarinda and Rev David Carlson of Oakland, Neb,
officiating. Pallbearers are to be Ed Daly, Steven Wood, Rodger Leek, Duane
Hartstack, Rolland Carlson and Alan Burwell. Maurice Peve is soloist and Leta
Wiley organist. Burial will be in the Hopkins cemetery.
Survivors
include his wife, the former Teresa Tornholm, to whom he was married last March 9, his
parents, Mr and Mrs Roy Fine
of Braddyville, a brother, Roy Maurice Fine Jr, of Braddyville, and a grandfather, Galen
Russell of Hopkins.
A
memorial fund is being established at the Wray church, and contributions can be
left at Wilson Grocery in Hopkins or with Rev Loren Daly of New Market.

Plane crash kills Larry
Griffith
A
young friend was with Larry,
their plane taking off when it went down, and both were victims. Larry and his father, Eldon, had been flying earlier in the day from the
landing strip, which is maintained on the Griffith farm.
Larry
[Eldon] Griffith, 30, of Wiggins,
Colo, who formerly lived near College Springs, was killed Saturday evening
[November 17, 1973] in a plane crash at Wiggins.
He
was born April 23, 1943.
Survivors
include his wife Marsha (Miller),
formerly of Siam, and two children, Troy, nine, and Lori,
seven. Also surviving are his parents, Mr and Mrs Eldon Griffith [Opal
Dugan], who lived in this area
before moving to Colorado, and two sisters, Mrs Melvin (Janice) Callan of Loveland, Colo, and Mrs Ralph (Rosalee)
Hixson of Omaha. Grandparents
include Mr and Mrs Doug Griffith
of Clarinda.
Funeral
services will be Tuesday.
Larry
was a graduate of South Page High School.
Among those who are going
to Colorado to be with the family are Mr and Mrs Perry Griffith, Mr and Mrs
Dwight Griffith, Mr and Mrs Bill Dugan, Mr and Mrs Doug Griffith, Mrs Mary
Good, and Myron Blair.

LARRY ELDON
GRIFFITH
Larry went to his eternal home, Nov 17,1973, at the age
of 30 years.
Larry was born April 23, 1943 in Clarinda, Iowa, the
son of Eldon and Opal Dugan Griffith.
He
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at College Springs and spent his
boyhood in that community.
He
was united in marriage to Marsha Ann Miller on Nov 25, 1962. To this union were born two
children, Troy Eldon and Lori
Ann, to whom he never missed a
day saying, I love you.
In
1965 the family moved to Colorado. The first year was spent in Loveland and
since then in the Fort Morgan and Wiggins area.
He was a faithful member
of the Church of Christ and served Christ his redeemer with steadfast devotion.
He was a friend to all those that knew him.
He
is survived by his wife, Marsha,
Troy, 9, and Lori, 8: his parents Eldon and Opal Griffith of Ft Morgan; sisters: Mrs Ralph (Rosalee)
Hixson of Omaha and Mrs Melvin
(Janice) Callen of Loveland;
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and hosts of other relatives and friends.
Services
were held Tuesday, Nov 20, 1973 at the Church of Christ in Ft Morgan, Colo with
the Rev W B Johnston officiating.
Casket
bearers were Steve Neel, James Decker, Steve Wenger, Russell Scofield, Rodney
Barnhart and Curtis Wiederspan. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Ft
Morgan.

CHARLES HENRY
BUCHANAN, SR.
Charles
Henry Buchanan Sr, son of William
and Mary Jane Miller Buchanan,
was born June 6, 1883 at Boonville, Iowa. He passed away at the Davidson Guest
Home, Clearmont, Missouri, November 17, 1973 having attained the age of 90
years, 5 months, 11 days.
He
left home at the early age of sixteen to work as a meat cutter in Valley
Junction, Iowa, which is now West Des Moines. On June 6, 1909 he was united in
marriage with Blanche M Taylor.
Their home was blessed with three children.
He
continued working as a meat cutter until age 82 when he came to make his home
with his daughter. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed cultivating flowers and
gardening. He was well known in the Des Moines vicinity and was liked by every
one he worked with. He especially enjoyed all his children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren.
Preceding
him in death was his wife on January 14,1957, his son William M, in 1962, one brother and one sister.
Surviving
are his daughter Eleanor, Mrs Edwin Burkhalter of Coin, Iowa, son, Charles H Buchanan Jr of Santa Ana, California; 12 grandchildren, 17
great grandchildren: 3 half sisters; 5 half brothers, and his stepmother.
Services were held
from Hackett
Funeral Home, Shenandoah, Iowa on
Tuesday,
Nov 20, 1973 at 2 pm. Words of comfort were by Rev Lawrence P Fitzpatrick.
Caring for flowers were
Mrs Terry Burkhalter and Mrs Art Johnston. Organist was Mrs Margaret Woods.
Casket bearers were Douglas Buchanan, William Buchanan, Terry Burkhalter, David
Dunn, Gerald Dunn and Ronald Taylor.
Interment
was in Elmwood Cemetery, Coin, Iowa.

Mrs Boylan was active in community, church work
Mrs
William (Jennie) Boylan, 94, one
of Northboro's strong community workers throughout her active years, died
Thursday at the Shenandoah hospital, and services were held Sunday from the
Northboro United Methodist Church and at Union Grove cemetery with Hackett
Funeral Home making arrangements.
Her
husband, who was superintendent of schools at Northboro, later farmed and was a
restaurant operator, died April 14, 1932. Since then, Mrs Boylan has had her residence with sons at Blanchard, her
sister, Tilla Cato, at
Northboro and since 1948 with a son, Don, at Shenandoah.
Jennie
Parmelia [Permelia] Henn, daughter
of Philip and Anna Roub Henn,
was born on a farm near Walkerville, west of Northboro, on Sept 10, 1879. She
was graduated from West Point rural school and attended Tarkio and Simpson
colleges. She taught school until her marriage to William Otis Boylan on Dec 28, 1904. They had three sons, Karl
[Thomas], Don and [Walter] Glen,
and made a home for two nieces, Hazel and Dorothy Boylan.
At
an early age she united with the West Point Church. In the Northboro Methodist
Church she served as president of the WSCS and was an enthusiastic organizer of
the Lord's Acre day. She was presented with a WSCS life membership.
Family,
gardening, and afghan making kept her busy and she had membership in the
Country Guild and the JOC class of the Shenandoah United Methodist Church.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters, and four brothers.
Survivors include three sons: Karl
[Thomas] of Northboro, Don of Shenandoah and [Walter] Glen
of Blanchard; six grandchildren, five great - grandchildren, one sister, Mrs
Will (Lillian) Chapman of
Northboro and nieces and nephews.
Officiating
at the services were Rev Raymond C Lott and Rev Richard Russell; music furnished
by Miss Ann Merkle, Mrs Ben Crain; assisting with the flowers, Mrs Edd Chapman,
Mrs Ted Edwards, Mrs Edward Rhoades Jr; at memory register, Mrs Joseph O'Hara,
Mrs Carl Stephens; ushers, Don Hensleigh and Byron Honan.
Casket
bearers included Ronald Barlow, Carl Boylan, Jerry Boylan, Francis Chapman, P.
Jon Miller and Ronald Stewart.

Services held for Mrs
Kellogg
Funeral
services for Mrs [Jessie] Pearl Kellogg, 89, of Braddyville were held Sunday afternoon at the Braddyville
United Methodist Church with Rev Clarence Landis officiating. Mrs Kellogg died Thursday afternoon at the Clarinda Municipal
Hospital.
She
was born March 19, 1884, near Hamburg, the daughter of Isaac [Bounty] and
Mary [Ann] Watts Shields. She
spent most of her life in Taylor and Page counties.
On
Dec 24, 1902, she was married to Delbert Fine, who died July 1, 1937. On Dec 14, 1938, she
married J [acob] D Shearer who
died in January of 1947. She was married to Harry Kellogg on Aug 5, 1950. He died March 1967. A daughter Ruth
preceded her in death in 1923.
She
is survived by three children, Ellis Fine of Hopkins, Mo, Mrs Hugo (Lola) Steeve of Clarinda, and Mrs Mary Arnold of Alhambra, Cal. There are six grandchildren and
six great grandchildren. Two sisters are Mrs Carrie Fine of Clarinda and Mrs Mamie
Bewley of Bell Gardens, Cal.
Casket
bearers at the service were Irvin Davison, Donald Davison, Bill Davison, Jim
Arnold, Marvin Fine and Robert Fine. Elaine Fine was soloist and Patricia
Hanson organist. Burial was in the Shearer cemetery with Walker Funeral Home in
charge of arrangements.
She was a member of the
Braddyville Methodist Church.

ClarindanÕs brother
died in Florida
[Hiram
Godden] Golden Cain, 70, brother
of Mrs D [aniel] C [harles] (Bonnie) Wallace of here, died Tuesday [Monday, March 19, 1973] in
a Miami, Fla, hospital following a long illness with emphysema. He had retired
about 15 years from his work as a horse trainer.
The
services were to be at Miami. He had lived at Chicago and other cities after leaving
Clarinda about 20 years ago. While in Clarinda he was active with work with
horses.
His wife was the former Claudia
[Thelma] Cross. Other sisters are
Mrs Evelyn Hetrick and Mrs
Glen (Mary) Watson of Shenandoah
and Mrs Wilma Chenoweth of
Omaha, and brother, Manford Cain,
of Omaha.

Services Friday for Frank
Savage
Services
for Frank D [ennis] Savage,
90, of New Market will be at 2 pm Friday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev M
Francis Hubbel officiating. Mr Savage died Tuesday afternoon at Gillespie Nursing Home where he had been a
patient since Aug 1.
He
was born Feb 21,1883, near New Market on the farm his family settled on in the
1850's. His parents were John M and Sarah Ann Pace Savage. His wife, Hazel Miller Savage, died in 1960. Mr Savage had been in the heating and plumbing business.
Mr
Savage is survived by one
brother, Glenn Savage, of
Clarinda, and by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jess
and Fred, and one sister, Mrs Grace Plowman.
Shirley
Larson will be soloist and Lois Moore organist. Casket bearers will be George
Slaight, Junior Drennen, Paul McComb, Bill McDonald, Jason Neumeyer and Alvin
Pershing.
Burial
will be in the Memory cemetery at New Market.

Heart attack fatal to Max
E Smith
Max
E Smith, 57, son of Ross and
Sue Smith of Des Moines, died Nov
5 at a Des Moines hospital following a severe heart attack in downtown Des
Moines. Services were held at Bedford with burial in the cemetery at Gravity.
He
was born at Conway in Taylor County, and the parents to move to Clarinda to
conduct barber and beauty shops. He attended Clarinda schools until graduation
from high school and junior college. He received his degree from Drake
University in science and education and was high school band director in Iowa
high schools for many years.
He
lived in Des Moines for 15 years, representative for National Creditors Inc.
He
is survived by his daughter, Mrs Cheryl Murray, of Richmond, Calif; his mother, Mrs Sue Smith, of Des Moines

Mrs C W Wyckoff active in community affairs
Funeral
services for Mrs C [rayton] W [Donald] (Nettie) [Jane] Wyckoff, 92, of College Springs, will be held at 2 pm
Friday at the College Springs United Presbyterian Church, with Rev W D Martin
officiating.
Burial
will be at College Springs. Casket bearers will be Ross Macrander, Ernest
Borthwick, Frank Kirkham, Perry Farquhar, Wayne Garrett and Durward Jackson.
Music will be furnished by Mrs Lowell Anderson and Joe McKinley, accompanied by
Mrs Clarence Whigham. At the register books will be Mrs Lisle Farquhar and Mrs
Ross Macrander. In charge of the flowers will be Mrs Perry Farquhar and Mrs
Harold Mitchell. The ushers will be Bill Whipp and John Kenagy.
Mrs
Wyckoff died Tuesday night at
West Heights Manor Nursing Home after being a resident there since August.
She
was born March 19, 1881, near College Springs, the daughter of Robert and
Margaret McClarnon McLean. She
was graduated from Amity College and taught school in the rural area.
She
was married to Dr Crayton [Donald] Wyckoff on July 12, 1909. He was a dentist in College Springs for many
years. He died on Dec 29, 1952.
She was interested
in her community, and
especially the youth. She served on the Page County Welfare Board 24 years and
received a citation for her interest in the welfare of the citizens of Iowa.
She was a Girl Reserve counselor for many years.
She
was active in all sections of the church from her youth to her senior years,
playing the organ, sponsoring youth groups, working in the women's
organizations and Sunday school. She was a member of the College Springs United
Presbyterian Church.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son Robert, on Oct 9, 1962, and one brother, Clark McLean.
She
is survived by her daughter-in-law, Mrs James (Frances) Burton of Potomac, Md, and her grandson, William of Portland, Ore, and Robert of Annapolis, Md, her sister-in-law Mrs Nell
McLean of Pella, and nieces and
nephews.
Lavelle Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements.
