Vern
Thompson services held
Funeral services for Vern Thompson, 62, of rural
Braddyville were held Saturday morning at Walker Funeral Home with Carl
Cummings officiating.
Mr. Thompson died Thursday morning at his home.
Music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Burch. Honorary bearers were Mark Goodwin, Floyd
Kelley, Wayne Moore, Virgil Davison, Lewis O'Neal, and Orville Thompson. Casket
bearers were Dean Barnett, Orval Brenneman, Ronnie Davison, Bill Ellison, Kent
Stickelman, and Bob Case.
Burial was
in the Clarinda Cemetery.

VERN
R THOMPSON
Vern R [ussell] Thompson was born July 7, 1911 at
Clarinda, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thompson [Ada Belle Freemyer].
He grew to manhood in Clarinda, graduating from Clarinda
High School. He was a life time member of the Christian Church in Clarinda.
He was married to the former Parrie Lee Price. Dr Russell V [ern] Thompson and Terry [Terrance] L [ee]
Thompson are the
sons. He has five grandchildren: Kevin, Lisa, Scott, Ted and Leigh Ann. He has two grandsons: Tracy
and Russell V [ern] Thompson Jr., who preceded him in death. His parents, three sisters
and three brothers also preceded him in death. Earl Thompson of Clarinda is the surviving
brother. He and his wife have lived on the present farm, east of Braddyville,
for 27 years. He was a man who loved his chosen profession and the outdoors. He
was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. His death was
unexpected and sudden at his home. He will be greatly missed by all who knew
and loved him.

Joe
Damewood native of C S
Joe Damewood, 60, of Maryville, Mo, a native of College Springs, died
Saturday afternoon [August 11, 1973] in Maryville of heart attack. Services are
set for Tuesday at 10:30 am at the Price Funeral Home in Maryville, with burial
in Maple Hill Cemetery near College Springs.
Born in College Springs, Damewood spent most of his early life
there. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945, and for the past 10 years has been employed at Northwest
Missouri State University in Maryville. He was a member of the Elks Club, the
American Legion and the United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of the home, Dorothy, three sisters, Mrs. Francis Aubert of College Springs; Mrs. John
Richmond of
Braddyville, and Violet Roush of Casper, Wyo., and a brother, John Damewood, of Gillette, Wyo.

FRANK
WALTER SHIELDS
Frank Walter Shields, 81, of the Siam community northwest of Hopkins,
died at 9:50 pm Wednesday, Oct 17, at the Gillespie Nursing Home, Clarinda,
Iowa, where he had resided the past year.
The son of Joseph [Milton] and Amelia Walter Shields, he was born April 26, 1892 near
Brooks, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Page County for a short time and in
1902 moved near Siam in Taylor County, Iowa.
He united with the Christian Church in Siam, Iowa, in
1917. He was a 50-year member of Plumb Lodge No 285, AF & Am and a 50-year
member of Highland Chapter No 523 of Siam.
He was married to Fannie [Mildred] Reid of Siam on December 25, 1917.
They lived on a farm east of Hopkins for two years and then moved to their
present home in Siam.
He leaves his wife, Fannie, of the home; four children, Reid
Walter Shields of near Siam, Mrs. C J Shreck (Ruth) of West Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Clark Crawford (Betty) of Clarinda, Iowa and Mrs.
Robert Rollstin (Billie) of East Lansing, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; seven great
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hulpiau of San Bernardino, Calif., and Mrs.
Viva Fine of New
Market, Iowa; three brothers, Grover of Clarinda, Dewey of New Market and Fred of the Siam vicinity. He was
preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Services were held Oct 20, Saturday afternoon at the Siam
Christian Church, Rev Carl Cummings, assisted by the Rev Loren Daly were the
officiating clergymen.
Horace Richardson, soloist, sang "Faith of Our
Fathers", "I've Done My Work", accompanied by Mrs. Orville
Grant, pianist.
Flower bearers were Mrs. LaVell Clark, Mrs. Mark Gardner,
Mrs. John Crawford, Mrs. Robert Shreck, Mrs. Richard Kline and Miss Gerry Ann
Rollstin.
Serving as pallbearers were John Crawford, George
Crawford, Robert Shreck. Richard Kline, LaVell Clark and Mark Gardner.
Honorary pallbearers were Ernest Gray, Robert Terbell,
Glen Woldruff, Mason Williams, Eldon Miller, Emory Hardee, Clem Jeffers, Fred
Henderson and Chester Olenius. Burial was in Shearer Cemetery, Page County,
Iowa. Swanson Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Stiverson infant services planned
Funeral services for David [Michael] Stiverson Jr., five-month-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. David Stiverson [Carol Joan Sugg], will be held at 2 pm Saturday afternoon at
Walker Funeral Home.
The infant died Wednesday [October 24, 1973] at Loring
Air Force Base, Maine, where his father is stationed. He was born May 30, 1973.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a sister, Carol
Lee, of the
home. Grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Eldon Stiverson [Lola Anderson]
of Clarinda and Mrs. Katie Sugg of Kinston, N C. Clarence Anderson of Clarinda is a great
-grandfather.
Rev Lester Greenwood will officiate at the service
with Joel Pottinger soloist and Mrs. Grace Perry organist. Burial will be in
the Clarinda Cemetery.

Mrs.
Belknap died after long illness
Mrs. Willis (Nola [Marie] Baker) Belknap, 70, died Saturday [May 19,
1973] at Humboldt following an extended illness, and services are to be at
Humboldt this Monday and at the Clarinda cemetery Tuesday morning.
The Humboldt service was to be at the Lindart Funeral
Home, and several of the local Baker family were to be in attendance. The
relatives had been visiting her recently because of her critical condition.
The body will be brought to Clarinda and friends may call
at Walker Funeral Home on Monday evening. Graveside services will be at 10:30
am Tuesday with the Rev Cecil Latta officiating.
She was the youngest of seven children of W. [illiam]
S. [iegel] and Minnie [Margaret] Wynn Baker, born near Clarinda Dec 16, 1902. She received
her education in Clarinda public schools, being graduated in 1920. Nola was a talented musician, well
known in musical work in high school and the First Methodist Church, and was
one of the Baker Music Makers in early radio KSO at Clarinda.
She was married at Oskaloosa Oct 16, 1926, to Willis
Belknap, who
preceded her in death on Jan 7, 1971.
She worked in the auditor's office in Clarinda for several
years until she moved with her husband to Fort Dodge in 1931, moving to
Humboldt in 1956, where her husband was chief of police until his retirement in
1966.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers,
sisters and husband. She is survived by a brother-in-law, sisters-in-law,
nieces and nephews.

Don
Parker died Friday morning
Funeral services for Don Parker, 76, of Clarinda were held this
Monday afternoon at the Lavelle Funeral Home, with D L Roberts officiating.
Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery. Casket bearers were
John Sperry, Sanford Turner, Dean Thompson, Bob Goff, Otto Krause and Mike
Farlin. The organist was Mrs. John Sperry.
He died early Friday morning at the Municipal Hospital in
Clarinda after being hospitalized for 8 days. His illness had extended over
three or four years.
He was born January 18, 1897 at Wood Lake, Neb, the son
of W. [alter] A. and Myra Brown Parker. He moved to Clarinda with his parents at an early age and helped his father in
his business.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He has no immediate survivors.

rites for Mrs. Knobel
Services for Mrs. Virginia
Sarah Knobel,
83, will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at the Burlington Junction (Mo) Christian
Church. The Rev Robert A Brown will officiate.
Burial will be in the Hazel Dell Cemetery near Clearmont,
Mo. The body is at the Barr-Merrick mortuary at Burlington Junction.
Mrs. Knobel was a resident of Burlington Junction for 20 years. She
died Saturday at a hospital in Maryville, Mo, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs.
Herman Blume died Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. Herman (Gertrude) Blume, 74, of rural Clarinda, will be
held at 2 pm Tuesday at St John Lutheran Church with Pastor Carl Lueker
officiating.
Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery. A family prayer
service will be held at 1:45 pm at the church on Tuesday.
Casket bearers will be Gilbert Sunderman, Martin Wagoner,
Melvin Freudenburg, Don Steinbeck, Lawrence and Howard Blume. At the register
books will be Mrs. Wendell Otte and Mrs. William Wichman. The organist Mrs.
Duaine Wagoner and ushers will be Alfred Sump, Wilbert Wagoner and Darwin Buch.
Mrs. Blume died Saturday morning at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha
after being hospitalized there for six weeks. Previous to that she had been
hospitalized in Clarinda for 10 days.
She was born Sept 6, 1898, northwest of Clarinda, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Freudenburg. She was baptized and confirmed
at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was married to Herman Blume, Dec 20, 1916, at Immanuel. They
farmed all their married life northwest of Clarinda.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Herman. One daughter Mrs. Elmer
(Irene) Eichhorst of Yorktown, two sons, Erwin of Clarinda and Harry of Brookings, So Dak and 11
grandchildren.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7:30
till 8:30 pm this Monday evening at the Lavelle Funeral Home.

AKERS WAS
FARMER IN OAK HILL VICINITY
OAK HILL, Sept 24 — Oscar Akers, 95, died at Colonial Manor in
Corning Sept 15. Oscar farmed in the Oak Hill vicinity until in failing health he went to
the home of his daughter and husband, M/M Dean Posten, rural Sharpsburg, then to the
Manor. Funeral services were Sept 17 at the funeral home in Bedford, burial in
Washington Cemetery north of Gravity. He is survived by eight daughters and two
sons.

Guy
Carter's mother died
Funeral services were held Oct 18 in Nauvoo, Ill., for Mrs.
Martha Carter,
72, mother of Guy Carter of Clarinda. Mrs. Carter died Oct 15 at Burlington, and
burial was in the Nauvoo cemetery.
She was born March 17,1901, in Putnam County, Tenn., the
daughter of John and Miranda Whitehead. She married James Carter Nov 23, 1918, at Mitchellville,
Tenn.; he died in 1967. She was a member of the Hillsdale Methodist Church.
Other survivors include sons James of West Burlington, Clifford of Burnside, Ill., and Reginald of Nauvoo; three
daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Bray of West Burlington, Mrs. Gary (Shirley) Black of Nauvoo and Mrs. Edward
(Cecilia) Harry of Nauvoo; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

E. CLOWSER
Services for John E. [lmer] Clowser, 92, of Route 2, Boise, who died
Thursday [August 16, 1973] at a Boise hospital, will be conducted Saturday at
10:30 am at Robison Chapel of the Chimes by John Sterling, a representative of
the Undenominational Church. Interment will be at Dry Creek.
He was born Sept 17,1880, in Clarinda, Iowa. He married Golden
Emma Hurst in
1902 at Clarinda, where they lived until 1942 when they moved to Boise.
Survivors are his wife, Boise; two sons, Willie of Nampa and Star of Lucerne. Calif.; two
daughters, Mrs. Bufort (Virginia) Murren, Boise, and Mrs. Clifford (Jackie) Hansel, Meridian; a sister, Mrs.
Charles Ellefsen,
Lucerne; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends may make contributions to the Idaho Tuberculosis
and Respiratory Disease Association, or flowers may be sent.

Jennie
Duncan,
83, Dies in Calif.
Funeral services for Mrs. Oscar (Jennie) Duncan, 83, were held in Wee Church of
the Heather, Glendale, Calif., with interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Duncan died in North Hollywood July 20,
1973.
Jennie Duncan, daughter of Ed
and Bess Smith,
long time residents of Siam where Mr. Smith was a merchant, was born in Siam
August 5, 1889.
She was married to Oscar [Antoin] Duncan at her parents' home in Siam December
1909 and the couple immediately moved to California. They made annual visits to
Iowa to see relatives as long as they were able. Mr. Duncan died August 11, 1967.
She
leaves a brother, William Smith, of Bedford; sister, Mrs. Mary Arthur, of Hopkins; nieces and nephews,
including Mrs. Glen (Opal) Stewart and Eldon Clayton of Siam.

Former
resident's husband died
Maynard Minthorn, retired blacksmith of Kellerton, Ia, died
Saturday morning [March 17, 1973]. He was a veteran of World War I and a cousin
of former president Herbert Hoover.
He was the husband of the former Marian Huff who lived for many years on
South 18th Street in Clarinda.
Survivors besides his widow are a son, Reuben of Frankfort, Germany, and two
daughters, Miss Alice Minthorn of Iowa City and Mrs. Wendell Wilson (Bonnie) of Oxon Hill, Md. There are
three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wednesday at the
Methodist Church in Kellerton.

Relatives
attend Fuller services
Local relatives attended the funeral for H [orace] E
[dwin] (Doc) Fuller,
which was held Wednesday at Centerville. He had been a teacher in the
Centerville high school and junior college for 43 years.
His wife is the former Ella Youngmark of Coin. Mr. and Mrs. O. C.
Youngmark, Mr.
and Mrs. Norman Esaias, Mark, Angela and Susan of Clarinda, and Mrs. Paul
Youngmark of
Coin were in attendance.
Mr. Fuller was a World War I veteran, a member of Lions Club with
25 years perfect attendance, and belonged to the Retired Teachers Organization
on local, state and national level.

Mrs.
L N Hoppock's death confirmed
Confirmation has come concerning the death of Mrs. L N
Hoppock, 73, who
died Jan 12 at Scott & White Hospital at Temple, Tex. She had had several
strokes and had been hospitalized after Nov 29 until her death.
Ina Verne Hoppock was born March 27, 1890, in Illinois, the
daughter of the Rev and Mrs. Joseph McKean. She was a graduate of National College, Kansas
City, Mo, and was a deaconess in the Methodist Church.
She was married July 18, 1920, to Lewis Needham
Hoppock in
Hutchison, Kans. In 1950 they moved to Clarinda where they lived until 1967.
After the death of Mr. Hoppock, former Page County engineer, Mrs. Hoppock moved to Temple, Tex.
Surviving are two sons, Dr L M Hoppock, Temple, and David L Hoppock, Richmond, Mo, seven
grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Services were at the St Francis
Episcopal Church in Temple, Tex, with burial at Bellwood Memorial Park.
A memorial fund was established in Mrs. Hoppock's name at the St Francis Episcopal
Church, Box 1126, Temple, Tex, 76501.

Beery formerly lived in Shambaugh
SHAMBAUGH - Larry Beery, member of the police department
at Wichita, Kan, was found dead early Sunday with three shots in his body
according to a telephone call from his father, Iven Beery, to local relatives.
He was on duty Saturday night, and investigation will
hopefully discover incidents surrounding his death. He formerly lived at
Shambaugh, nephew of Mrs. Ren McClarnon who received the news. His wife and two children
survive him, also two brothers, a sister and numerous relatives in the
Shambaugh vicinity.
His brother, Eddie, died in the late 1950's in a farm accident on
the Donald Hoskins farm near here.

Mrs.
Ray Jackson died in Maryland
Mrs. Ray [Roy] Jackson [Jane Mabel Anderson], 67, daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. W T Anderson and graduate of Clarinda schools in 1924, died March 31 at her home in Chevy
Chase, Md. Her husband, Capt Jackson of the U S Navy, is a native of Bedford.
Her service was held at [St.] Albans Episcopal Church at
Washington, D C, and burial in the Arlington National Cemetery, the gravesite near
that of the Unknown Soldier.
Her sister, Mrs. Dorothe of Dover, N J, sent the news to
Clarinda friends, telling that Mrs. Jackson had undergone surgery last
summer.

Mrs.
Linebaugh died at Lincoln
Mrs. Wilbur (Mildred M) Linebaugh, 64, of Lincoln, Neb, died
Thursday evening [July 5, 1973] at St Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln following
an illness of about three years.
Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at
Walker Funeral Home with Rev Cecil Latta and Rev John Clark officiating. Aletha
Hutchings was organist. Casket bearers were Jim Huitt, Larry McKinnon, David
McKinnon, Martin Lee, Ed Welch and Jim Montgomery. Burial was in the Clarinda
Cemetery.
She was born Nov 7, 1908, at College Springs, the
daughter of David Oliver and Harriett Bast Bussard. She was married to Wilbur [Douglas] Linebaugh in 1932 at Maryville.
Mrs. Linebaugh is survived by her husband of the home in Lincoln, and
four children, Mrs. John (Marilyn) Benbenek of Jamestown, N Y, Charles
Adkins, and Gary
Linebaugh of
Lincoln, Neb, and Mrs. Donald (Kay) Mobilia of Milford, Mass. There are 16
grandchildren.
Her mother, Mrs. Harriett Bussard, is of Clarinda and two sisters
are Pearl Damewood of Palatine, Ill., and Mary McKinnon of Shenandoah.

Joseph
D Wayt former Clarindan
Joseph D [awson] Wayt, 82, former Clarindan, died
Friday [April 13, 1973] at the Shenandoah hospital where he had been for six
days. His illness had progressed during recent years until he was very much
confined to his wheel chair.
Mr. and Mrs. Wayt have lived in Shenandoah for many years, retired
from Co-Op Oil & Supply. He was born at Jefferson. After being graduated
from Simpson College, Joe became the YMCA secretary in Clarinda, and later
joined with Tyler Brothers in the bottling work.
His services were held this Monday. Funeral was at the
United Methodist Church and burial was to be at Derby cemetery. The Rev Don
Bissinger, minister of the United Methodist Church, was officiating. A prayer
service at the Hackett Funeral Home was held for the family prior to the
services.
Mr. Wayt is survived by his wife, Margaret [Lucille Grimes]; one daughter, Mrs. Richard
(Virginia) Frank,
of Essex, and four granddaughters.
A memorial has been established to the emphysema fund and
gifts may be left with Francis (Red) Braley.
