Paul Stickelman services Friday
Paul
M [ark] Stickelman, 86, of
Braddyville died Tuesday night [August 7, 1973] at West Heights Manor where he
had been a patient since February.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 pm Friday at the Braddyville Christian Church with
Mrs Bettie Hull and D L Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Braddyville
Cemetery.
Mr
and Mrs Maynard Burch will be in charge of music and Mrs Ruthe Kelley will be
at the register. Casket bearers will be Wendell Engstrand, Martin Engstrand, Orland
Engstrand, Virgil Kelley, Keith Stickelman and Lyle Davison.
The
family will meet friends at Walker Funeral Home this Thursday from 8 to 9 pm.
He
was born Sept 14, 1886, near Siam, the son of E [lmer] E [lliott] and Joan
Bradley Stickelman.
He was married to Cora
May Freiermuth in 1909. Mrs
Stickelman died Oct 27, 1970. Mr
Stickelman was a farmer and
member of the Braddyville Christian Church.
He is survived by one
son, Kent
Stickelman of Braddyville,
seven grandchildren
and three great
grandchildren.

Services held for Virgil
Guthrie
Funeral
services for Virgil Guthrie,
78, of Birmingham, Ala, and a former Clarinda resident, were held Saturday at
the Trinity United Presbyterian Church, with Rev Wayne Fisher and Rev J D Almes
officiating. Burial under the direction of the Lavelle Funeral Home was in the
Clarinda Cemetery.
Casket
bearers were Roy Graham, George Gerberding, J Will Anderson, Max Kendrick,
Angus McIntosh and Edward Guthrie. The organist was Mrs Helen Hoskinson. In
charge of the register book was Mrs J Will Anderson. Ushers were Robert Hamm
and Lowell Oxley.
Mr
Guthrie died early Friday in
Birmingham where he had lived the past three years with his daughter.
He
was born March 30, 1895, at Kellerton, the son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Guthrie. He was reared in the Kellerton and Mt Ayr area.
He was married to Vernis Barnett Feb 27, 1919 and they lived in Clarinda after their marriage and he
was employed at the Berry Seed Co for many years. Mrs Guthrie died in December of 1955. He was a Veteran of
World War I.
He
is survived by one daughter, Mrs H A (Eunice) Park of Birmingham, one grandson and two great-grandsons.

Max Smith died of heart attack.
Max [W.] Smith, son of the late Mrs Blanche Smith, died Saturday night [October 27, 1973] at
Alameda, Cal. He had had a stroke last summer, and a heart attack Saturday was
fatal. Arrangements are pending. Max lived in Clarinda and New Market communities until moving west. He
was a brother of the late Harold Smith, former employee of the Herald Journal.

Services Saturday for Mary
Eshelman
Mrs
Mary K [atherine] Eshelman, 87,
of Clarinda died early Thursday morning [October 25, 1973] at West Heights
Manor where she had been for four years.
She
was born June 7,1886, near Clearmont, Mo, the daughter of John D [aniel] and
Martha Hockensmith Davison. She
was married to Homer [Lester] Eshelman in 1905, and the couple spent most of their lives in this area after
living briefly in Colorado in the early part of the century. Mr Eshelman died in December of 1968.
Funeral
services for Mrs Eshelman will
be at 3:30 pm Saturday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev James E Moseley
officiating. Mrs Grace Perry will be organist and Mrs Bettie Hull soloist.
Burial will be in the Clarinda cemetery.
Mrs
Eshelman is survived by four children: [John] Amos Eshelman and Mrs Ralph (Ora) Williams of Clarinda, Mrs Gerald (Myra) Warrick of Amity, Ore, and Paul [Taft] Eshelman of White City, Ore. There are 12 grandchildren,
32 great-grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Two
brothers are Dick Davison of
Chariton and Charley Davison
of Marysville, Kan, and two sisters, Mrs Edna Culver of Clarinda and Mrs Laura Williams of Pickering, Mo. A daughter Vira Faye preceded her in death.

Max Weidman lived in Northboro area
Services
for Max D Weidman, 55, of
Northboro were held this Monday at Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah and
burial at Union Grove cemetery following his death Thursday at the hospital at
Fairfax. He had been in poor health for two years, his death the direct result
of lung infection.
The
family have been residents
at Northboro for 20 years, he being survived by his wife, Dorothy [Danborn], daughters Linda Sue
and Sandra Kay. He was
a brother to Mrs
Lloyd Wilson of Red Oak and Thad W
Weidman of Omaha.
He
was born at Stennett and
lived several years in the Westboro, Mo, vicinity.
The
Rev Max Hall of Rudd returned
to officiate at the services. Honorary bearers were Harry Sigismund,
Jack Whitmore. Milton Dowell, Rex, Bayless, John
Bayless, Monte Goodman and Bill Staples. Active bearers were Ben Crane, Donald
McCoy, Kenneth Raney, Duane Miller, Paul Brayman and Keith Finley.
Music
was by Keith Franzen and Mrs Margaret Wood, at the register Mrs Harry
Sigismund, in charge of the flowers Mrs Bert Lumry and Mrs Hale Greenleaf.

Mrs Roy Singleton died at hospital
Mrs
Roy (Edna) [Bashore] Singleton,
92, died this Monday [May 28, 1973] at 10:30 am at the Municipal Hospital where
she has been with fractured hip and subsequent surgery.
Funeral
services are to be Wednesday at 2 pm at the Walker Funeral Home. The Rev Ed
Osburn of New Market United Methodist Church is to officiate.
Mrs Singleton has been living for 16 years with Mrs Cecil
(Hazel) Gant five miles southeast
of New Market. She is a native of the Siam community. She was hospitalized for
eight days.

MRS ALLISON WAS FORMER NEW MARKET RESIDENT
NEW MARKET, July 20 —
Jennie [Gladys Cooper]
Allison, who was the wife of Cliff [William
Clifford] Allison, formerly of
this vicinity, died in
a nursing home in
Redlands, Cal July 19. They
left here in 1947 and had lived in California until their deaths. Her son Forrest [Ernest] died June 27. The
remaining children are Leila Hager
of Tucson Ariz; Mrs Carol
Mauldin of Redlands; Orlin Allison of Miami, Fla and Ralph Allison of Sacramento, Cal. She is also survived by two sisters and one brother.

Mrs Harry Anderson died after operation
Mrs
Harry (Hazel) Anderson, 64, died
late Friday at the Red Oak hospital failing to recover from shock after an
operation early that day. Services were being held this Monday from Fremont
Lutheran Church at Nyman, the Rev Melvin Suhr in charge.
She
has a son, Larry, at Kansas
City, Mo, a daughter, Mrs Duane (Jean) Newman at Indianola, and three grandchildren. Two
brothers are G Clifford Swanson
of Essex and Stanley Swanson
of San Diego, Cal, and two sisters, Mrs Jennings (Evelyn) Werklund of Los Angeles, and Mrs James (Lois) Still of Shenandoah.
Mrs Anderson was a native of Fremont township, born to Martin
and Anna Swanson, and spent her
entire life in Page county. She was in rural schools in Fremont Township, and
attended Essex High School

Services held for Mr
Earl McCowen
Services
for Earl J McCowen, 82, of
Clarinda were held Sunday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home. Mr McCowen died Friday morning [September 28, 1973] at West
Heights Manor where he had been since last July.
He
was born June 15, 1891, at Clarinda, the son of Sylvester and Susan Love
McCowen. In 1914 he was married
to Florence Moore who died Dec
24, 1970. Mr McCowen had
farmed and later worked at Parris Dunn and at Evans Motor.
Survivors
include four children: Dale McCowen
of Portland, Ore, Ray McCowen
of Paradise, Cal, and Mrs Merrill (Opal) Parker and Mrs Bernard (Thelma) Watkins of Clarinda. There are 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr
McCowen was the last member of
a family of eleven.
Rev
Lester Greenwood officiated at the service. Doris Forbes was soloist and Grace
Perry organist. Casket
bearers were Lloyd
Meyers, Elmo Johnson, Ted Miller, Bruce Otte, Max Sunderman and Merle Goecker. Burial was in the
Clarinda Cemetery.

Villisca student died
after crash
Private
funeral service was held this Monday morning for Richard D (Rick) McAlpin, 16, Villisca High School sophomore, who died in
an Omaha hospital after being involved in a two-car head-on crash Saturday near
his home north of Villisca.
Memorial
service is to be this Monday afternoon at the Villisca United Methodist Church
with the Rev Eldon Haworth officiating. A brother and cousins were casket
bearers. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the
Villisca cemetery.
Accident
reports indicated that Rick was
driving north on Highway 71, being half mile north of Tenville Junction
Saturday at about 6 pm, when his car met head-on with one driven by John Beedle
Jr, 17, of Red Oak. Officials are quoted as reporting the collision occurred in
the northbound lane.
Both
youths were alone in their vehicles. McAlpin died about two hours after the crash in an Omaha
hospital. Beedle was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday in the Red Oak
Hospital, with facial cuts and a fractured foot.
McAlpin is son of Mr and Mrs David (Dorothy) McAlpin, grandson of Mr and Mrs Evan Andrew of rural Villisca and Mr and Mrs Willis
McAlpin of Arkansas.

Bess Parker has 2 children here
Mrs
Bessie B Parker, 78, of Clarinda
died Thursday afternoon at Municipal Hospital where she had been for two weeks.
She
was born March 18,1895, at Limestone, Tenn, the daughter of Lidge [Elijah
Mitchell] and [Sarah] Amanda Williams
Britt. Her husband, James
Edward Parker, preceded her in
death May 17, 1964.
She
is survived by two children: Merrill Parker and Mrs Leonard (Darlene) Geer, both of Clarinda. There are seven grandchildren
and 11 great grandchildren. Elmer Britt of Clarinda is a brother and Mrs Maude Mathews, state of Washington, a sister.
Funeral
services for Mrs Parker were
held Saturday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Clarence Landis officiating.
Maynard Burch was soloist and Mrs Joyce Burch organist. Casket bearers were:
Raymond Shrimpton, Ivan Hansell, Harold and Bernard Watkins, Dewey Williams,
and Carroll Shanks.
Burial
was in Clarinda cemetery.

Clarindan's brother
died in California
Services
for Lloyd R [ussell] Hughes,
67, of Sherman Oaks, Cal, brother of Mrs Amos Wagoner, will be held at Forest Lawn Tuesday. He died
Friday morning [September 28, 1973] after an illness of nine years, resulting
from a number, of paralytic strokes.
A
native of Red Oak, Mr Hughes
had served in the detective bureau of Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank for
over 30 years, retiring in 1964 for health reasons.
His
wife, the former Virginia [Delphia] McLain of Emerson, survives him; also one son, Jack R Hughes of North Hollywood; two daughters, Mrs
Marshall (Lois) Bowen of Tarzana,
Cal, and Mrs Eugene (Muriel) Field
of Yuma, Ariz; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
In
addition of Mrs Wagoner, he is
survived by another sister, Mrs Lauren Dawson of Council Bluffs, and a brother, Luther
Hughes of Grand Island, Neb.
Mrs Wagoner flew to Los Angeles this Monday to attend the
Tuesday services.

Mrs Bussard rites were Saturday
Funeral
services were held Saturday at Walker Funeral Home for Mrs Mary Marie
Bussard, 67, who died Wednesday
night [August 29, 1973] at Coon Rapids, Minn. She had been making her home with
her daughter, Mrs Joe (Doris) Mollenkopf at Rogers, Minn, for the past few years.
She
was born April 19, 1906, at Coin, the daughter of William and Cordelia
Carson Cutter. Her husband Fred
Bussard died in 1961. They had
lived in this area before Mr Bussard's death, and she has since made her home with her daughter.
Besides
her daughter, she is survived by two sons, Donald Dean Bussard of Santa Rosa, Cal, and Charles F Stephens of Omaha. There are seven grandchildren. Carl
Cutter of Shenandoah is a brother
and sisters are Lena Wallace
of Clarinda and Martha Cochran
of Boise, Idaho.
Rev
Lester Greenwood officiated at the service with Aletha Hutchings organist.
Casket bearers were Howard Fleck, Orville Henneman, Horace Jones, Jesse
Stephens, Lloyd Binns, and Ermal Parrott.
Burial was in the
Clarinda Cemetery.

Services
for Mrs Fastenau
A
former Clarinda resident Mrs Rudolph (Stella Nothwehr) Fastenau, 68, died Sept 24 [1973] at Lincoln, Nebr and
services and burial were held there last Thursday.
The
daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Richard J [ohn] Nothwehr of Clarinda, she was born July 24 1905, at Ft
Morgan, Colo. She moved to this area when she was seven years old, and
graduated from Clarinda High School in 1924. She was married Dec 30, 1925, to Rudolph
Fastenau and lived here until 1944.
Survivors include her
husband, one daughter, Ruth Werner
of North Glen, Colo; three sons, Arden of Aurora, Colo, Leo
of Detroit, Mich, and Lowell
of Lincoln; two sisters, Mrs Lee Field of Wheat Ridge, Colo, and Florence Nothwehr of Clarinda, and 14 grandchildren.

Mrs Beulah Shields taught 25 years
Funeral
services for Mrs. Beulah Shields,
78, of rural Blanchard will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at the Lavelle Funeral
Home, with Rev W D Martin officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at
College Springs.
She
died Sunday evening at the Gillespie Nursing Home, after being there for two
weeks. Previous to that she had been at the Municipal Hospital.
She
was born Jan 3, 1895, at Elliott, Iowa, the daughter of Harry [Samuel] and
Vercilla Cummings Giltner. She
attended High School in Indianola and Oakland. She was a graduate of Iowa State
Teacher College and taught home economics for more than 25 years in Iowa.
She
was married to Clifford [Milton] Shields June 14,1922, at Oakland. They lived in Mason Township, also in
Clarinda, and for the past 13 years in Amity Township near College Springs.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, her husband in April of 1965
and one son in infancy.
She is survived by one
daughter, Mrs Allen (Suan) Reed of College Springs, three
grandchildren, six great grandchildren. One sister is Mrs Ruby White of Council Bluffs.

Jack LavelleÕs brother died
The
Jack Lavelle family was
attending the funeral service for Jack's brother, William, held Saturday at Polk, Neb. Bill's wife died
about a year ago, and his illness was about three days, duration.
The service was
at United Methodist
Church at Polk and burial in the Polk cemetery. His parents, Mr and Mrs
Merl Lavelle, brother, Ralph and sister Mrs Bob (Marie) Clymer are of Polk and a sister Mrs Elmer (Maxine) Garner
of Hordville, Neb.
He died Thursday
in the General
Hospital at Lincoln. He has four children.

Services held for Mrs
Rodgers
Funeral
service for Mrs Alvin
L [ewis] Rodgers [Mabel],
77, is being held in Shenandoah
this Monday afternoon following her death Saturday [March 24, 1973] at the
family home six miles
southeast of Shenandoah.
Mrs
Rodgers was born in Gillman, Mo,
and came to Iowa with her parents when four years of age. The family home was
two miles south of Shenandoah, so she attended rural schools and was graduated
from Shenandoah high in 1914. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar
Falls preparatory to teaching rural schools in the Shenandoah area.
She
was married in 1919 and
had lived in her present home since. She had been active in the Summitt
Methodist church for over 50
years, worked with the WCU, was a member of W W County Club for Women, and was a leader of Morton 4-H
girls club for many years.
A
son, Elvin, died during World
War II, and Paul lives at
Northridge, Cal. She has five grandchildren. Ralph Seipel of Shenandoah is a brother and Mrs Glenn (Ona)
Carper of Shenandoah a sister.
Funds
for a memorial can be
given to the Clarence Whistlers of rural Shenandoah. Rev Karen Merrill and Rev
Reginald Merrill are in charge of the services at Hackett Funeral Home.

VIVIAN M ANDREW
Vivian
M [cCoy] Andrew was born Nov 24,
1898 near Hepburn, to Harley and Maude Negley McCoy. At the age of 14 she was baptized in the East
Nodaway River and became a member of the Fairview Church of Christ and remained
so until 1952 when she was taken into the Methodist Church at New Market by the
confession of Faith. She was a loyal worker in all church activities until her
health failed. She received a life membership into the Mission for Christian
Service in which field she had worked very hard.
She
was united in marriage to Ralph P Andrew on Feb 19, 1919 in the home of her parents in the Guss and New
Market communities where they farmed.
To
this union were born two children Adrain of Shenandoah and Mrs Dale (Doris) Anderson of Martelle.
She
is survived by her husband, the two children, a daughter in law Mrs Adrain
Andrew of Shenandoah, and a son
in law Dale Anderson of
Martelle, four grandchildren, Laurence of Wapello and Warren Andrew of Ames, Denean and Dean Anderson of Decorah, brothers, Ted McCoy of Villisca, Alva McCoy, Spokane, Wash. Sisters Mrs Harry (Mabel)
Cooney, Villisca, Mrs Ray
(Reva) Stamps, Gravity, Mrs
Roy (Maravene) Springs, Brooks,
and a sister in law, Mrs Harley (Pearl) McCoy of Clarinda and a host of other relatives and
friends.
She
has been a member of the New Market Unit No 300 of the American Legion
Auxiliary for 50 years and held several offices including unit president and
county president. She was a 4-H committeewoman for 15 years and was proud to be
able to give her services.
Vivian passed away Nov 5, 1973 at the Colonial Manor Nursing home
at Corning. Services
Nov 9 at the New
Market Methodist Church with burial at the Guss Cemetery.

Services held for SchoolingsÕ
grandson
Mr
and Mrs Ralph Schooling of Brooks
were called to Red Oak Dec 3 because of the sudden death of their
three-year-old grandson, Chris Alan Schooling. The youngster, the son of Ronald and Judy
[Wyckoff] Schooling of Red Oak,
was dead on arrival at Murphy Memorial Hospital.
Funeral
services and burial were held Dec 6 in Red Oak. The youngster was born April
12,1970, at Red Oak.
Survivors include the
parents, four brothers, Ronald Jr, Mark [John], Roger [Eugene] and Kenneth
[Dale], and a sister, Lisa
[Lorraine], all of the home; and
grandparents Mr and Mrs Fred Wyckoff of Red Oak and Mr and Mrs Ralph Schooling [Elma Diggs].

Murphy
Funeral
services for Mrs Gladys Murphy,
69, of Tabor were held Sunday [December 23] following her death three days
earlier [December 20, 1973] at an Omaha hospital. Burial was in the Tabor
Cemetery. She is survived by three brothers and five sisters, including Vic
[tor] Irwin of Yorktown and Hobart
[Layton] Irwin of Coin in the
local area. She was a native of Fremont County.
