Eugene
Austin McAlpin, son of Willie
Eugene and Effie Hancher McAlpin,
was born February 23, 1911, on a farm north of New Market, Taylor County, Iowa,
and passed away at the Clarinda Municipal
Hospital, June 5th, 1976, at the age of 65 years 3 months and 13 days.
On
October 23, 1929, he was united in marriage to Maxine Plowman, and they are the parents of one daughter, Dorla
Gene (Mrs. Ivan Johnson) of Des Moines, Iowa.
His
entire life was spent in Taylor County, with farming his main occupation, until
five years ago he was forced to give up active labor,
due to cancer, and in 1971 they moved to Clarinda, Iowa where they have since
resided. But, he faced the ensuing years
with a fortitude that amazed his family and friends.
Eugene was a devoted father and husband; a good neighbor who
was ready and willing to help when and where needed. His Church affiliations were with the United Methodist Church of
New Market. He was a member of Plumb Lodge # 285 A. F. & A. M. Highland
Chapter #523 Order of Eastern Star, both of Siam; and B.P.O.E. of Maryville,
Missouri.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, one grand child; two half sisters, Glocile
(Mrs. Harvey Anderson) and Nettie
(Mrs. Worthy Werts) two half
brothers. Earl and Russell McAlpin.
He
is survived by his wife, Maxine,
and daughter Dorla & her husband Ivan; two grandsons, Paul and Craig Johnson of Des Moines,
Iowa. Two sisters, Susanna (Mrs. Floyd Dougherty) of Chula, Missouri; and Norma Jean (Mrs. Marshall Brabson) of Deming, New Mexico; one half brother, Dennis McAlpin and two half sisters, Ruby (Mrs. Albert Holland) and Mrs. Agatha Slaight all of New
Market, Iowa. Many nieces and
nephews, other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
He
will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Wallace Bauman died after illness
Wallace
S Bauman, 67, of Council Bluffs
died Saturday at an Omaha hospital following an extended illness.
Born
in Indiana [January 19, 1906], he resided in Council Bluffs from 1950 to 1955.
He and his wife, LaVeryl,
moved to Clarinda where they managed the Youngs Rest Home there until 1967 when
they returned to Council Bluffs and owned and operated the former Franklin
Manor there.
Mr
Bauman had served for 10 years as
treasurer for the Iowa Nursing Home Association. Previous to his rest home
operations he was a bridge man for the Chicago, Northwestern Railroad. He was a
member of the Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors
include his wife, LaVeryl, a
son, Dean of Council Bluffs;
two daughters, Mrs Irene Westberg, of Duluth, Minn, and Mrs Maxine Janes of Galesburg, Ill. Three foster children are Paul Childers of Kankakee. Ill; David Childers, of Sedalia, Mo, and Mrs Carol Turner of Omaha, Neb. He had 13 grandchildren, a
brother, John Bauman of
Jefferson, and two sisters, Mrs Edith Conroy and Mrs Helen Bowles of Jefferson, Iowa.
Funeral
services being held Tuesday at the Meyer Chapel, Rev James W Reeves, Iowa State
Overseer for the Church of God of Prophecy of Des Moines, officiating, assisted
by Rev Robert W Brown, pastor of the local Church of God of Prophecy.
Interment was to be in
Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

Orlis Norris, 70, died this Tuesday
Services
for Orlis [Earl] Norris, 70,
of Clarinda will be Friday at 10:30 am at Lavelle Funeral Home with Rev Carl
Cummings of Bedford officiating, following his death this Tuesday morning at
the municipal hospital after being admitted Monday night.
Burial
will be in Old Memory cemetery.
Born
Nov 24,1902, at St Joseph, Mo, the son of Ulysses [Grant] and Kathryn [Ann] (Thompson)
Norris, he moved to the Clarinda
area at age 16 with his parents. He was married to Georgia Kohler [McGaugh] Feb 22, 1931, at Burlington Jct, Mo.
He
barbered in Braddyville, New Market and Clarinda before retiring three years
ago. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Survivors
include his wife of the home at 613 South 13th, two step-daughters, Mrs
Darrell (Joye) Welch and Mrs Kenneth (Ruth) Walker of Clarinda; 11 step-grandchildren and 14 step - great grandchildren;
three brothers, Orville of Independence, Mo, Jesse of Braddyville and Thomas of Siam.

Roy Cavender died in Nebraska
MASON TOWNSHIP—[Le] Roy W [oodrow] Cavender a
former resident of this area, died at a nursing home in Plattsmouth, Neb, May 6
[1973]. Funeral services were Thursday, May 10, at the Caldwell Funeral home in
Plattsmouth.
His
son Ray died several years
ago. Besides his wife Anna of
the home, a granddaughter and two great grandsons, all of California and
several nieces and nephews, survive.

A
former Clarinda resident, Mrs C Horton (Kathryn [Alma] McMillan) Talley, died Wednesday in Carbondale, Ill., local
friends have been notified. Survivors include her husband, two brothers, Ivan
and Hue McMillan, a sister, Mrs
Al Burton and a daughter.

Marion Mahan died at Bedford
Marion
A [lvin] Mahan, 82, died at his
home in Bedford Saturday [September 1, 1973] after an illness of 2 1/2 years.
Funeral
services were conducted by Evangelist Gil Peters of Maryville, Mo, at the Shum
-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford Tuesday.
Survivors
include his wife Gertrude, two
daughters, Mrs James (Velma) Elwood of Wichita, Kan, and Mrs Walter (Jewell) Warner of Clarinda; five grandchildren; six brothers and
sisters, and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Friday services for
Mrs Lala Long
Mrs
Lala L Long, 84, of Braddyville
died Tuesday noon at the Clarinda Rest Home where she had resided for the past
three years.
Services
for Mrs Long will be at 1:30
pm Friday at Walker Funeral Home with Carl Cummings in charge. Maynard Burch
will be soloist and Joyce Burch organist. Casket bearers will be Ronnie
Davison, Max Davison, Arlo Sunderman, Bobby Wilson, Truman McCurdy and Bob
McClure. Burial will be in the Braddyville cemetery.
Mrs
Long was born Aug 12, 1889, near
Braddyville, the daughter of John and Alice Mann Nicholas. She was married to Walter E Long who preceded her in death. She had worked in the
lunchroom of the Braddyville School before her retirement.
Mrs
Long is survived by one son, Max
Long of Clarinda, and four
grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A son, Ivan, and one grandchild preceded her in death.

Charles Pfander, 82, Page County native
Funeral
services will be held at 2 pm Friday at the United Methodist Church in
Burlington Junction, Mo, for Charles Pfander, 82, a former Clarinda resident.
He
died Tuesday [September 25, 1973] at St Francis Hospital in Maryville after a
long illness and the body is at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel in Burlington
Junction. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Mr
Pfander was born July 29, 1891,
in Page County and was a graduate of Clarinda High School. He lived here until
1933, then farmed near Burlington Junction, and moved into that town last
April. He was married in 1914 in Clarinda to Marie [Belle] Collier, who survives.
Other
survivors are a son, Charles C of Springfield, Mo; two daughters, Mrs John (Ruth E) Anderson of Council Bluffs, and Mrs Warren (Frances)
Davidson of Downers Grove, Ill.;
a sister, Mrs Lena Meyers of
Leon, 10 grandchildren and two great -grandchildren.
Mr Pfander was preceded in death by two brothers and a
sister.

Lee McKinnon died after long illness
Lee
McKinnon, 46, formerly of
Clarinda, died Monday at Phoenix, Ariz, following a long illness.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday afternoon at Phoenix with graveside military
services this Thursday afternoon at the Clarinda cemetery with Rev Lewis Hunter
officiating. Casket bearers were Bob Wills, Eddie James, Lynn McKinnon and
Marvin Clark. Walker Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
He
is survived by six children, Michelle, Candace, Jeffery, Shawn, Todd and
Robin, all of Phoenix. Brothers
and sisters are Max McKinnon of Burlington Jct, Mo, Bob McKinnon of Clarinda, Mrs Bob (Marilyn) Wills of Clarinda, Mrs Marvin (Leona) Clark of Council Bluffs, Mrs Eddie (Diana) James of Clarinda, Lynn McKinnon of Clarinda and Marvin McKinnon of Shenandoah.
He
was born Nov 17, 1926 at Clarinda, the son of Donald and Leah Duncan McKinnon. He was a veteran
of World War II. Mr McKinnon had lived in this
area before going to Phoenix.

Mrs Flesner former Clarinda resident
Funeral
services for a former Clarindan, Opal Marie Flesner, 67, were held in Tracy, Minn, last month.
Born
July 4, 1906, in a covered wagon near Shawnee, Okla, she traveled to St Joseph,
Mo, where she was adopted by Rev William and Mary Elizabeth Eaton. The family moved to Clarinda where Mrs
Flesner grew up, married and had
three children. She and her husband then lived in Tarkio, Mo, Pueblo, Colo, and
finally in San Luis Obispo, Cal.
Survivors
include her husband, Wilbert,
a son, William R Parker of Pueblo, daughters Mildred
L Bowen of Des Moines, and Elizabeth White of Salem, Ore, a step-daughter, Geraldine Moore of Denver, Colo, a
stepson, Gerald Flesner of
Kansas City, Mo, 12 grandchildren and 14 great - grandchildren.

Mrs Hattie Long born in county
Graveside
services for the remains of Mrs Hattie Long will be held at 10 am Tuesday at Clarinda Cemetery
with Rev Cecil Latta officiating, and Walker Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
Mrs
Long has lived in the West since 1947, her son, Ivan, living in Portland, Ore. She died Jan 22 [1973] in the Vancouver (Wash)
Memorial Hospital.
Mrs Long was born Nov 16, 1876, in Page County, the
daughter of Sefra and Rachel Hazelton. Her husband, Bill,
was employed in Clarinda with the Iowa Light & Power, and died in 1928. The
family residence was at 201 South 17th St.
Mr
and Mrs Ivan Long have come for
the services, guests in the Merrill Cagley home. They will visit in Nebraska en
route home.

Mrs Briggs lived In Taylor County
Mrs
David (Lucile Marie) Briggs, 68,
of rural Gravity died Friday morning [May 18, 1973] at Clarinda Municipal
Hospital where she had been since Wednesday.
She
was born May 10, 1905, at Frazee, Minn, the daughter of John and Fredericks
Sultman Heuer. On Feb 25, 1925,
she was married to David Briggs.
She spent most of her adult life in Taylor County.
Funeral
services for Mrs Briggs were
held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly of the New
Market Church of Christ officiating. Mrs Joan Archer was soloist and Mrs Grace
Perry organist. Honorary bearers were Forest Lawger, Willard Marsh, Orie
Huntsman, Fred Straugh, Dean Johnson and Ray Stamps. Casket bearers were Bob
Briggs, Clarion Lee Heuer, Fred Heuer, Robert Straugh, Neal Morehouse, and
Leonard Huntsman. Burial was in the Guss Cemetery.
Mrs
Briggs is survived by her husband
and two sons, Edwin Briggs of
New Market and Virgil Briggs of Clarinda. There are four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Joels operated Clarinda store
Charles
Joels, 81, who was a Clarinda
storeowner for nearly 20 years, died Tuesday at a hospital in Tulsa, Okla, and
the funeral was being held this Thursday. He had been in ill health with a
heart condition for the last year.
The Joels family came to Clarinda in 1932 and the store
on south side of the square
carried the Joels name. Beside Charley's active work with Chamber of Commerce and business interests, he was member of
the school board and served as Clarinda postmaster.
Mr Joels remained in Clarinda for a short time after selling the store and returned to Oklahoma. Mrs
Joels and three children, Robert
and Mary Lou (German) of Tulsa
and Irving of Louisville, Ky,
survive him.
Mr and Mrs Maurice Schlachter received
the word locally.

Vaughn was phone company manager
Funeral
services for Everett C [lell] Vaughn, 86, of College Springs will be held Wednesday morning at the United
Presbyterian Church in College Springs, with Rev W D Martin officiating. Burial
will be in the cemetery at College Springs.
He
died Sunday night at the Municipal Hospital in Clarinda after being
hospitalized since July 9. His illness had been over the past three months.
He
was born Aug 6, 1886, at Green Castle, Mo, where he was reared. He was married
to Alta Mills Feb 12, 1908, at
St Louis, Mo. They moved to Coin in 1910, where they lived for a few years
until moving to College Springs where they have resided since. He managed the
telephone company in College Springs until his retirement in 1959.
He
is survived by his wife, Alta,
two daughters, Mrs Vera Grissom of Stockton, Cal, and Mrs Nell Waters of Toledo, O, two sons, Lester of Santa Clara, Cal, and Everett of San Antonio, Tex. Two sisters are Miss Mabel
Vaughn of Hemet, Cal, and Mrs
Clio Darr of Green City, Mo, and
a brother Frank Vaughn in Des
Moines. There are eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Bert Sunderman went west in '37
Bertholdt
[Berthold] John Henry Sunderman,
69, died Friday morning [August 10, 1973] following a coronary early Thursday.
Bert made his home in Los Angeles, Cal, since 1937
when he went to visit his sister Clara Hunter, who preceded him in death in 1952. Another
sister, Elvera Fastenau, also
preceded him in death.
He
was born March 12, 1904, in Page County, the son of Henry J and Sedalia
Goecker Sunderman. He was
confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended Immanuel School.
He
is survived by a daughter, Pearl, his step-mother, Frieda Sunderman,
of Clarinda, two brothers, Harlie Sunderman of Villisca and Rollyn of Clarinda, two sisters of Corning, Mrs
Crystal Firkins and Ruby
Sunderman. He had several nieces
and nephews.
Rollyn flew out Thursday evening to be with him arriving
shortly before his death.
Funeral
services were to be held
Monday morning in Los Angeles, Cal. Burial was to be in the same cemetery as his sister, Clara.

Services held for Mrs
Miller
Services
for Mrs Gertrude Miller, 82,
of Clarinda were held Sunday afternoon at the Lavelle Funeral Home with Rev
Wayne Fisher officiating. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.
Casket
bearers were George Gerberding, Angus McIntosh, Lawson and Dale Miller, Cecil
Smith and Dick Duran. The organist was Mrs Helen Hoskinson.
Mrs
Miller died Thursday at her home
at 122 West State.
She
was born Oct 1, 1891, at Clarinda, the daughter of E [lmer] H and Minnie
Keller Finley. She attended rural
schools and was married to W [illiam] K Miller on March 6, 1918, at her parents' home. Mr
Miller was employed at the post
office for over 50 years. He died May 28, 1962. She continued making her home
on State Street.
She
had been a member of the United Presbyterian Church since 1905 and a member of
the Order of Eastern Star for over 50 years.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister
in infancy.
She
is survived by one daughter, Mrs Mary J Oats of Taylorville, Ill., two grandsons and two great
- grandchildren.

Clarinda burial for Mrs
Koehler
Funeral
services for Mrs Oscar (Maud) Koehler were held this Monday morning at St Clare Catholic Church with
Father Nelo A Leto officiating.
Mrs
Koehler died Wednesday night at
Tarkio, Mo. She was born Jan 22, 1898, at Albia, the daughter of Marathon H
and Nancy McCann Squire. She was
married to Oscar Koehler who
died Oct 15, 1972.
She
is survived by three daughters: Mrs Frank (Mary) Gay of Omaha, Mrs Junior (Izetta) Castillo, Elmo, Mo and Mrs Patrick (Nancy) Laughlin, Redlands, Cal. She was preceded in death by two
daughters: Bertha Christine who died in infancy and Mrs Jim (Doris) Sheridan who died April 9, 1973.
The
rosary service was held Sunday at Walker Funeral Home. Burial was in the Clarinda Cemetery.

Miss McCullough died at rest home
Services
for Miss Grace McCullough, 93,
of College Springs, were held this Monday afternoon at the Lavelle Funeral
Home, with Rev Wayne Fisher officiating. Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery
at College Springs.
Music
was provided by Joe McKinley and Joe Farquhar accompanied by Mrs Clarence
Whigham. Casket bearers were Paul, Perry, and Lisle Farquhar, Ira McKinley,
Ernest and Don Borthwick. Miss McCullough died early Saturday morning at the Clarinda Rest Home.
She
was born March 7, 1880 [1881], at Braddyville, the daughter of John and Anna
White McCullough. She attended
country schools and Amity College at College Springs. She stayed in the home of
her parents caring for them until their deaths. The last few years she has
resided in rest homes in Clarinda.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and four brothers.
She is survived by three
sisters, Mrs Mary Nesbitt of
Rapid City, S D, Mrs Harriett Gordon of Riverside, Cal, and Mrs Lottie Anderson of York, Pa.

Relatives hear word of
death
SHAMBAUGH—The Jake Stimsons received a call
Monday on the death of Mrs Stimson's father, Jack [John] Bicknese of Wheatland, Ia. Mr and Mrs Stimson, Jon and David, joined by Mrs Carolyn D'Arcy who flew here from Mt Baldy, Cal, attended the
services Wednesday at Wheatland. Carolyn and Jon sang at the
funeral. Mrs Stimson and David remained for a few days with her
mother, while Carolyn returned
with Mr Stimson and Jon to visit here.

Vern R Thompson died unexpectedly
Vern
R [ussell] Thompson, 62, succumbed unexpectedly this Thursday morning
to a heart condition, which has plagued him for several years. He had been in
the hospital at Shenandoah until going to his home east of Braddyville.
Services
are pending, probably to be Saturday at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda.
Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.
Clarinda
was the early home for the Thompson family, and Vern was married
to Perry [Lee] Price on Aug 1, 1932. They have made their home on the farm for 26 years.
They have two sons, Dr Russell [Vern] Thompson at Columbia, Mo, and Terry [Lee] Thompson of Clarinda, and five grandchildren. Earl
Thompson of Clarinda is his
surviving brother.
Vern was member of the First Christian Church of
Clarinda and of the Masonic Lodge.
