Funeral
services for Everett Fast, 76,
of Cincinnati, O, will be at 2 pm, Saturday [November 9, 1974] at Barr-Merrick
Chapel at Burlington Jct, Mo. Rev John Welch will officiate and burial will be
in the Ohio Cemetery there.
William
Everett Fast was born April 26,
1898, at Burlington Junction, the son of Miles and Lyda Potts Fast. He was married to Lucille Scott at Omaha, Neb. He attended high school at
Burlington Junction and lived in the vicinity until entering the Marines in WW
II.
After
the war he returned to Nodaway County for 12 years, then he served one year as
head of Veterans Administration in Washington D C. He moved to Cincinnati, O,
where he was regional office chief for VA until his retirement five years ago.
He
was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Mr
Fast died Wednesday [November 6,
1974] at Veterans Hospital in Cincinnati. He is survived by his wife of the
home and a sister, Mrs Anna Belle Kosart of Wauconda, Ill.

Cemetery. Mrs Fishell, 70, a
former resident of the Braddyville area, died Sunday [April 14, 1974] in Mesa,
Ariz.

The Fishells had spent the winter at Mesa, Ariz. He came home about three weeks ago and she with friends were preparing to start home the 15th.

Pursell, 74, of Silver Springs,
Md, brother of Mrs Annalee Manes of Clarinda. Services were held in Silver Springs for Mr Pursell, who was a former teacher and business manager at
St Mary's College. He also taught 30 years in Washington, D C schools. His wife
and two daughters also survive.

Mrs Allen died at Kansas City

America G [addis] Allen, 88,
sister of Mrs Ethel McKinnon of Clarinda, died Saturday [May 4, 1974] at Kansas City, Mo, where she has been
making her home with a son, Howard.
She
was born Aug 13, 1885, her home being near Bedford until moving to Hopkins
after her marriage. She lived at Drexel, Mo, for many years, her husband dying
nearly 50 years ago, and has been with her son about 30 years. She was member
of Prairie View Church at Drexel.
She
had a stroke about seven weeks ago. Mrs McKinnon has been with the nephew and sister during that
time, returning to her home at 13th and State on Tuesday. Mrs McKinnon is last of three sisters and three brothers in
her family.

D Cross, 64, of Clarinda died
Wednesday afternoon [May 8, 1974] at Veterans Hospital in Omaha where he had
been a patient for the past 13 weeks.
Mr
Cross was born May 14, 1909, in
Clarinda, the son of Claude and Harriett Welton Cross. On Sept 15, 1939, he was married to Gertie
Hollis at Davenport. Mr
Cross's last work was for Page
County. The family home is at 436 South 12th.
Funeral
services for Mr Cross will be
at 2 pm, Saturday at Walker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Clarinda cemetery.
Besides
his wife of the home he is survived by four sisters: Darlene Cross, Jerry
Cross, Mrs June Adams, and Mrs
Fern Fuller all of Clarinda.
The
family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7-8 pm, Friday.

Coloradan died Friday
Miss
Jane (Jennie) Tharp, whose early
years were spent in Clarinda, died just before Christmas, according to delayed
news to friends. She had been living at Frasier Meadows Manor at Colorado
Springs, Colo, for many years following long service in that city's schools.
She was daughter of the David Tharps, the home being near State and 18th Street. Her sister, Ruth died in California within the last two years.

[ohn] Bremer, 54, of Ames, who
died there Tuesday [May 7, 1974].
He
was born Feb 28, 1920, at Lawton, and was married to Ruth McCowen June 13, 1951, at Des Moines. Survivors include
his wife, a brother Glen of
Davenport and a sister Mrs John Revers of the state of California. Services will be at 11 am Friday at St
Cecelia Church in Ames.
Walker

Nyman burial for Fritz

Fritz
[Frederick] W [illiam] Bruegman,
73, retired farmer in the Stanton area, was dead on arrival at the Red Oak
Hospital where he was taken by the Stanton rescue unit following a heart
attack. He had been viewing some of his stock in company with his pastor when
the illness came on suddenly.
Services
were being held this Thursday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church at Stanton with
Pastor Julius Peterson officiating. Burial was to be in Mount Hope Cemetery at
Nyman.
Mr
Bruegman was born Feb 8, 1901, in
Pierce County, Neb.
He
married Ruby Ellingson in
1922. She preceded him in death in 1936. Three children who survive are Frederick
N Bruegman of Bloomfield, Neb, Mrs
Richard (Mabel) Cloyd of Albany,
Ga, Wallace Bruegman of
Cedaredge, Colo.
In
1939 he married Frances Abrahamson who survives. There are 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He
was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton, and was serving on the
church council, president of Stanton Yesterdays Teenagers; a member of Elks and
Eagles Lodge.

SAMUEL A SMITH.
Samuel
A [lexander] Smith, son of Benjamin
and Sarah [Gess] Smith of Greene
County, Tenn. was born near Greeneville, Tenn, Aug 22, 1882. When almost 19
years old, he came to Iowa, living here ever since.
He
was married to Mary S [tillwell] Abbott in 1906. To this union was born one daughter Trula I[rene] Smith who passed away in 1930. He was also preceded in
death by father and mother, six brothers, Joseph, William, Jasper, John,
Charley, and Hobart and one sister Bessie.
Surviving
are his wife, two brothers, J Worley of Clarinda, Harve of Emerson and one sister, Cora Holt of Greeneville. Tenn, also nieces and nephews, and a host of other
relatives and friends.

James Radke, infant son of Mr
and Mrs James Radke of Clarinda,
died Wednesday morning [June 5, 1974] at University Hospital in Omaha where he
had been taken after his birth at Municipal Hospital May 28.
Besides
his parents, James and Brenda Joyce Rine Radke, he is survived by grandparents, Mr and Mrs Albert
Radke of New Market, and Mrs
Mae Rine of Clarinda. Mrs
Bertha Drennen of New Market is a
great grandmother.
Private
family graveside services will be held for the infant at Memory Cemetery at New
Market with Walker Funeral Home making arrangements

VERN O "PETe” ASHFORD
Vern
O "Pete" Ashford, 73,
longtime Braddyville resident, died early Wednesday morning June 12, [1974] in
the University Hospital at Omaha, Nebraska, where he had been taken on Sunday,
June 3. He was confined in the Clarinda Municipal, one week before going to
Omaha. He had been in ill health for a long period of time.
He
was born Sept 14, 1900 at Fort Collins, Colo, the son of the late [Zacha] Ortis and Abbie [Abigail Burch] Ashford. His early years were spent in Colorado, Arkansas
and Joplin, Mo. At an early adult age he moved to Iowa with his mother and they
made their home with his uncle Dick and Jack Burch. His entire
adult life has been spent in Page County around the Braddyville area, moving to
Braddyville in 1934.
He
was married to Grace Anderson of Braddyville. Sept 22,1924. To this union 5 children were born, Jack, (who makes his home with his parents, Mrs
Fred (Wanda) Holder of St Joseph, Bill of St Joseph, and Mrs
Al (Twila) Anala of Denver, Colo
and Silas Vern, who preceded
him in death in 1965.
He
leaves to mourn his death, his wife Grace and son Jack of the
home. Other children Wanda and Bill of St Joseph, Twila of Denver, Colo, one sister Faye Alaca of California, eight grandchildren and five great
grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren.
Pete's working years were with Paris Dunn Mfg plant in
Clarinda, county maintenance work and as a trucker, until he was forced to
retire due to his health.
His
hobby in later years was spent in doing leather handcraft, of which he was very
skillful, his work was sold through out a wide area and friends will remember
him yet, by using products he has made. He was always busy at his workbench,
took great pride in the finished product and always had a cheery greeting for
all.
He
will be greatly missed by his family, other relatives and many friends.
"To
live in the hearts we leave behind, is not to die."
Betty
Hull conducted the services. Pallbearers were Oral Neeley, Robert Stevens,
Wayne Fine, Max Moore, Clifford Bales, Robert Case Jr., Gilbert Burch soloist
and Mrs Maynard Burch organist.

Herbert Warrick services Saturday
Herbert
[Fielden] Warrick, 75, who was
preparing to return from his winter at Molalla, Ore, to be with Wendell
Warrick family here until September,
died Wednesday [May 1, 1974] at his home.
Services
will be Saturday at 2 pm at Walker Funeral Home, and burial will be in Old
Memory Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 9 pm Friday at
Walker's.
Born
April 2, 1899, to Fielden and Mariam McWilliams Warrick, he attended schools in this area. Most of his
life he was a farmer in Page and Taylor County. After retiring, he lived both
in Oregon and Clarinda, and traveled among his children. He was married to Grace
Weaver Feb 10, 1921, and she
preceded him in death in 1951.
Wendell
Warrick and Mrs Dean
(Catherine) Herzberg are
surviving children in Clarinda.
Other
survivors are sons Herbert Jr of Chariton, Harold of Coos
Bay, Ore, Orville of North
Bend, Ore, and Ronald of
Dallas, Tex; daughters Mrs Norma Adams of Knoxville and Mrs Arthur (Juanita) Blacke of Molalla; brothers Walter of Molalla, Vincent of Lafayette, Ore, Gerald of Amity, Ore and Carroll of Pasadena, Cal; sisters Alice Neal of Fairbanks, Alaska, Edyth Caley of Omaha, Grace Adams of New Market, and Wilma Herald of Wickenburg, Ariz; 19 grandchildren and six
great - grandchildren.
Also
preceding Mr Warrick in death
were sisters Mrs Josie Mart, Mrs Clarissa Douglas and Mrs Jennie Schenck, and brothers Calvin, Harold and Harry.

Word received of
niece's death
Mrs
Victor (Burness Hale) Pearson died April 5 [1974] from an unexpected heart attack while at her home in Long
Beach, Cal. Services were held at Mottell's Chapel with G H McLain of First
Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Westminster Memorial Park.
Her
husband [Victor Glen], two
daughters, Pam and Penny, and three granddaughters are among the
survivors. Mrs Irma Pfander of
Truro, Ia, is a sister and Harley Pearson of Long Beach father-in-law. Ernest Pearson, an uncle of Clarinda, received the news here.
Mrs
Pearson was the daughter of the
late Mr and Mrs Harry Hale of
Clarinda, born in Missouri on July 21,1909. She was graduated from Clarinda
schools in 1927, and for 23 years had been in California.

Services Friday for Joni
Oostenbrug
Services
for Joan Lea (Joni) Oostenbrug,
who died early Wednesday [April 17, 1974] on her 17th birthday at University
Hospital in Omaha, are being held Friday morning and her high school classmates
will have a part in the final honors paid to her.
The
daughter of Mrs Edward (Ardella) Butler and the late Glenn (Dutch) Oostenbrug, she was a junior at Clarinda High School. She
participated in music, drama and numerous other school activities. The evening
before her entrance into the hospital, March 23, she had been initiated into
the honor society.
The
funeral will be at 10 am Friday at St John Lutheran Church with the pastor, Rev
Carl Lueker, officiating, Walker Funeral Home making arrangements. Mary
Greenwood and Lorna Owen will be at the register.
CHS
students, Richard Anderson, Gary Lines, Craig Moore, Curtis Blume, Gaylord Otte
and Robert Sunderman will be casket bearers. Ushers will be Ron Wogan, Bruce
Brown, Kevin and Jan Wagoner. Pianist will be Lynn Herzberg.
A
prayer service for the family will be at 9:45 am prior to the funeral, and
burial will be in the cemetery at Hull, Iowa.
Joan is survived by her stepfather and mother, Mr
and Mrs Ed Butler, sisters Nancy and Connie of the home, and step-sisters, Mrs Bob (Barbara) Courter of Denver, Colo, and Mrs Rick (Suzanne) Lich, Fulton, Mo. Her grandmother, Mrs John Recher, is of Hartley.
She
was born April 17, 1957, at Primghar, and came to Clarinda when her father
became owner of Weils Store. The family home is at 111 South 22nd St. She was
baptized in May of 1957 at Grace Lutheran Church at Primghar, and confirmed May
23, 1971, at St John Lutheran Church in Clarinda.
Because
of her long illness and the family's strong interest in cystic fibrosis, the
family suggests memorials be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Assn.

Services Tuesday for Edla
Oman
Mrs
Anton (Edla) [Mathilda] Oman, 88,
of Clarinda died Friday night [August 23, 1974] at her home at 212 E Chestnut.
She
was born Oct 11, 1885, at Clay Center, Neb, the daughter of Andrew and Clara
Falk Johnson.
She
was married to Anton Oman on
March 31, 1909 at her parents home. Mr Oman died in 1966. The couple had farmed north of
Yorktown before moving into Clarinda.
Funeral
services for Mrs Oman will be
at 2 pm, Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Gudmund Petersen
officiating. Casket bearers will be Lester Nothwehr, Clarence Nothwehr, Glenn
Harms, Russell Larson, Lewis O'Neal and John Carlson. Burial will be in Nyman
cemetery.
Mrs
Oman is survived by a nephew, Floyd
Carlson of Villisca, and five
nieces, Dorothy Hatswell, Mildred Brown, and Viola Shuey of
Red Oak, Gladys Oman of Des
Moines and Charlene Perryman of Florida.

Leonard Bain died Friday
Leonard
[H.] Bain, 72, of Clarinda died
early Friday morning [August 23, 1974] at Municipal Hospital, where he had been
a patient a week.
He
was born June 19, 1902, at Grand River [Decatur County, Iowa], the son of Frank
[William Franklin] and Lora Hopkins Bain. He worked in the mines for many years, did blacksmithing and before
his illness 14 years ago assisted farmers by operating a disc-sharpening
service.
Mr
Bain is survived by his wife Edna [Pearl Nordyke] of the home at 315 West Logan, one child, Mrs
Merrill (Helen) Milleson of
Clarinda and two grandchildren.
Surviving
brothers are Donald of Carter
Lake, Homer of Omaha, Orville of Farragut, Ted of Leon and Jim of Iowa City and sister, Juanita Lady of Nebraska City.
He
was preceded in death by a son, Harold, killed in World War II, his parents, two sisters and one brother,
the latter in recent weeks.
Funeral
services for Mr Bain were held
this Monday afternoon [August 26th] at Walker Funeral Home with the
Rev Jerold Irvin officiating.
Grace
Perry was organist. Casket bearers were Jerome Osborne, Art Kiper, Virgil
McClarnon, Lester Simms, Neal Rastofer and Kenneth Hunter. Burial was in
Clarinda cemetery.

Man killed near
Blanchard
BLANCHARD
— A Greenfield man was killed and a Blanchard man critically injured in a
one-car accident south of here Monday evening [November 4, 1974].
Killed
was Robert [Leon] Shatava, 48,
of Greenfield, a passenger in a car driven by Dick Brownfield, 30, of Blanchard.
The
two apparently had been working at Brownfield's auto repair shop in Blanchard
during the evening, and had headed south for Elmo on M road when the car went
out of control a mile south of Blanchard. The accident happened about 9:15 pm
near the Francis Moore farm home. State troopers report noted excessive speed
being apparent.
The
car left the road, hit a fence post, sheared a utility pole and broke the tops
off two wells. Power lines were broken and traffic blocked temporarily.
Witnesses said the car had rolled several times.
Shatava was thrown from the car and killed instantly. Brownfield was taken to the Shenandoah hospital by the Coin
rescue unit and transferred to Mercy Hospital in Omaha where he is in critical
condition.
Funeral
services for Shatava were
scheduled at Greenfield this Thursday afternoon [November 7th].
It
was third traffic death in Northwest Missouri in three days.

WILLIE ALBERT
HOLLAND
Willie
Albert Holland, eldest son of Albert
and Ruby McAlpin Holland was born
near New Market, June 4,1931 and passed away at the Clarinda Municipal
Hospital, Oct 23, at the age of 43 years, 4 months and 19 days. His entire life
was spent in Taylor and Page counties. On March 11, 1950 he was united in
marriage to Ruth Hewitt and to
this union four daughters and three sons were born. They established their home
around New Market. Then Willie accepted a position with the Taylor County Highway where he remained for 16
years. Five years ago he transferred to the Page County Highway and was
employed there until a severe heart attack in January of 1973 forced his
retirement. During the past 21 months he has suffered a great deal and required
special care, to the extent of an average of one admittance a month to the
hospital. Medical skill and care did all possible to alleviate his suffering
and prolong his life, but he passed quietly away in his sleep early Wednesday
morning.
Willie was of a cheerful disposition, always looking on
the bright side and had a warm smile for every one. He was a kind and devoted
husband and father, his first consideration always for his family.
He
is survived by his wife, Ruth and
their seven children: Terry, Nancy, Richard, Gordon, Lisa and Kathy of the home, one married daughter, Cheryl
Lingelbach and her husband, Robert and their little son, Robbie; his parents, Mr and Mrs Albert Holland of New Market; brother, Donald and wife of Denver, Colo, and many, many other
relatives and a large circle of friends who mourn his death.
Funeral
services for Mr Holland were
held at the Walker Funeral Home with the Rev Lester Greenwood officiating, at 2
pm Oct 25. Burial was at Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Mrs Harley Barchus former Clarindan
Mrs
Harley A [lbert] Barchus, 83,
former long-time resident of Clarinda, died March 7 at Sioux City, after a
one-week hospitalization.
She
was born July 10, 1890, in Hoboken, N J, the former Lulu Grace Kuhls. She moved to Clarinda with her parents, Mr
and Mrs Dietrich Kuhls [Henrietta Schegey], at the age of five. On Jan 5, 1923, she was married to Harley A
[lbert] Barchus of Clarinda. They
moved to Sioux City in 1926. Mr Barchus died in 1958.
Both Mr and Mrs Barchus were former
employees of the Clarinda Journal.
She
was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sioux City, Morningside
Chapter 502, Order of Eastern Star, and Royal Neighbors of America.
Survivors
include a daughter, Miss Mabel M Hutchings, who lived with her mother in the family home at 1320 Morningside
Avenue, Sioux City, and a sister, Mrs C F Beckman, of Canton, Illinois.
Funeral services were held March 9 at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel
at Sioux City with Rev William Skinner
officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

Mrs Bales died after long illness
Mrs
Clarence (Bessie) [Mae] Bales, 74,
of Clarinda died Saturday night [March 16, 1974] at Gillespie Nursing Home
after a long illness.
Services
will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home with Rev John Clark officiating.
Miss Aletha Hutchings will be organist. Burial will be in the Clarinda
Cemetery.
She
was born Sept 24, 1899, at Clarinda, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Taylor
McKinnon [Sarah Alice Lines]. On
Dec 24, 1919, she was married to Clarence [Talmadge] Bales who survives.
Besides
her husband of the home Mrs Bales is survived by a daughter, Mrs James (Joetta) McCowen of New Berlin, Wis, and four grandchildren. Two
sisters are Mrs Leslie (Doris) Forbes of Clarinda and Mrs Charles (Minnie) Downs of Moline, Ill.
She
was member of the First Christian Church and was charter member of the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 3086.
Casket
bearers for the services will be Keith Stickelman, Marvin Woldruff, Bob
McKinnon, Russell Holt, Merrill Miller and Floyd Kelley.
Memorials
are being designated for the American Cancer Society or First Christian Church.

ESTHER B. SMITH
Mrs
Esther B [lanche] Smith of 1034,
18th St, Greeley, Colo, wife of Ernest Smith, died Friday, Nov 1,1974, at Weld County General
Hospital. She was 73.
She
was born at Coin on Feb 7,1901 to Hadley [Johnson] and Augusta [Jane Hayner]
Polsley. She was married at
Omaha, Jan 10, 1922 to Ernest Smith. The Smiths went to
Colorado from Clarinda in 1943.
She
was a member of the Coin Methodist Church and Greeley Navy Mothers Club No 15.
Surviving,
in addition to her husband, Ernest,
are five sons and three daughters: Lyle P, Greeley; H Eldon and John, both of San Diego,
Cal; C Lynn, La Salle, Colo; James
L, Evans, Colo; Mrs L A
(Doris) Overdick, Imperial Beach,
Cal; Mrs Ethel Schlotthauer,
Chula Vista, Calif and Mrs Ron (Elaine) Adcock, Des Moines. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.

Dr Glenn Rotton formerly of Essex
Dr
Glenn N Rotton, son of the late Mr
and Mrs Frank [Pech] Rotton, died
Tuesday [May 28, 1974] at Seattle after a short illness. He had retired from
practice as an obstetrician and gynecologist at Seattle. He is survived by his
wife, the former Gail Samuelson of Essex, a son and daughter. He was born in Nebraska and was reared in the
Essex vicinity where his father was editor and postmaster.
