SIAM
MRS. FINE DIES
Funeral Services Held
Last Saturday
Mrs.
Hattie Fine aged 71, passed away
at the home of her daughter Mrs. Roy Cavner Thursday morning at 2:30 o'clock. Mrs. Fine had been ill for several weeks past. She was a
woman of sterling character who had many friends. Her husband, A. [aron] C.
[olumbus] Fine passed away many
years ago. She leaves to mourn her passing, a son Bert Morehouse of Kansas City, Kansas, a daughter Mrs. Flovia
[Rosa Floria] Cavner, three
grandchildren, three step children, a number of step grandchildren and many
other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at
Shearer church by a former pastor, Rev. Proctor of College Springs. Interment was
in the Shearer Cemetery.
[FINE, HARRIETT DELILAH "HATTIE" MOREHOUSE ARCHER] She united in early life with the Good Hope M E church in early womanhood; later she transferred her membership to Siam, then to College Springs, Iowa. Her nature was a loving and cheerful disposition. No word or deed was too harsh for her to forgive and forget and she could always see good qualities in everyone. She was a great lover of flowers and spent much of her time among them. One of her greatest comforts was to give her flowers to the living. These flowers have faded and gone but their perfume lingers on; so her life as it slowly faded from us has left its fragrance and long may the memory of her life be a guiding star showing us the way to a better world. Her last few weeks she was confined to her room and many of her hours were spent in visiting with her friends and relatives. [Poem not transcribed.]

Another Man Killed in
Terrible Auto Accident
Elmer Fine, Aged 43, Meets a Tragic Death When His Auto
Goes Into the Ditch and Upsets. His Mother Also Badly Hurt. Funeral Services
Held Sunday
On
Thursday of last week, the people of this city were again startled when the
news was phoned here that Elmer Fine, a well known farmer living 5 miles southwest of Bedford, had died
in the Clarinda hospital after being rushed there after an auto accident the
same day.
It
appears that Elmer Fine,
accompanied by his mother and a neighbor boy had started for a sale about 11
o'clock in their auto, and while traversing along the road, he hit a bad rut in
the road and in doing so threw his mother, who was sitting in the rear seat,
forward and against the canopy of the car, causing her nose to bleed and
bringing forth a scream of terror from her.
Mr.
Fine hearing his mother scream,
unthinkingly turned about in the car to see what the trouble was, and in doing
so, evidently twisted the steering wheel of the car and sent it crashing into a
ditch beside the road.
Parties
following, arrived on the scene and seeing the predicament, and finding Mr.
Fine seriously injured and his
mother in bad shape, rushed them to the Clarinda hospital where all that
medical skill could do was given them, but Mr. Fine's injuries were so severe
that he could not stand the shock and he died the same day about five o'clock
p. m.
His
mother received several broken ribs, and her breast badly crushed, but with
careful nursing, she is now pronounced out of danger, although the shock of her
son's tragic death, nearly prostrated her, when finally informed of his death,
some 48 hours afterward.
The
neighbor boy that accompanied them on the ill-fated ride, miraculously escaped
with only slight bruises, but with a memory of the scene that will go with him
to his grave ever fresh in his mind.
Funeral
services for the deceased were held Sunday from the family home and he was laid
to rest forevermore in the cemetery at Siam.
The
grief stricken wife and children, as well as his father and mother have the
sympathy of the entire community, for in the death of Mr. Fine, they lose a loving husband and father and a
dutiful son.

Elmer had always been a resident of the community in
which he was born. Converted in 1906, in a series of meetings under the
ministry of Rev. Brown, he united with the Church of Christ at Siam, continuing
a faithful member of the same until his death. Not only will he be missed in
the church and home, but his going will be a distinct loss to the community, he
having taken an interest in educational and public affairs. His motives always
stood for clean and righteous living, helping in every cause that was for the

OBITUARY
Mrs. Josie Fine
Josephine
Booze Fine, daughter of David
and Lucinda [Lytle] Booze, was
born in Pennsylvania April 27, 1858 and passed away at her home near

marriage to E. [phraim] J. [asper] Fine who preceded her in death on June 23d 1936.
Their
family consisted of four children: Alice who died in early childhood; Elmer who met an accidental death in 1923, as did
another son Clyde who came to
his untimely death in 1905. One son Clem Fine of Braddyville, Iowa survives his mother, who
with his wife Della were
untiring in their care and devotion to her during all the years.

All
her life she had been a true Christian and for many years she has been a member
of the Methodist church in Siam. She was a charter member of the Ladles Aid of
the church and was much loved by every member. Another place is vacant in our
circle. A wonderful mother and grandmother has gone to her reward. For many
years she had the care of her invalid husband, always patient and faithful and
though her cross was heavy to bear, her crown is all the brighter today because
she was always ready for service or sacrifice in the Lord's vineyard.
Funeral
services were conducted at the Shearer church by Rev. Chas. Arnold. Burial was
in the Shearer cemetery.
