Alice Brown

Alice Brown, 82, of Clarinda died Monday, May 1, 1989 at Goldenrod Manor, where she had been a resident for a short time.  

Born Feb. 13, 1907 in Clarinda, she was the daughter of Renwick and Blanche (Reed) Brown.

She spent all of her life in Clarinda and the vicinity and attended Pleasant Ridge country school and Amity High School at College Springs.

She was baptized in the Reformed Presbyterian Church near Clarinda.

Preceding her in death were parents and four brothers, Warren, Merrill, Ivan, and William.

She is survived by cousins.

Graveside services were held this Thursday morning at Clarinda Cemetery with Rev. Charles Bulger officiating. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Nodaway Valley Historical Society.

ROLLA DAVISON, 68 RITES HELD APRIL 25

Funeral services for Rolla [Raymond] Davison, 68, Braddyville, lifetime resident of Page County, were held April 28 at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda with Rev. Don Briley officiating. Mr. Davison died April 25 in the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was in the Shearer Cemetery northeast of Braddyville.   

He is survived by his wife, the former [Dorothy] Ruth Johnson; two sons, Delmar and Truman Davison, both of Hopkins, Mo.; four brothers, two sisters; eight grand children. He was a nephew of Mabel Harsh and a cousin of Mrs. Ivo Randels of Bedford.

OBITUARY

Rolla [Raymond] Davison was born April 20, 1903 to Robert and [Mary] Anna Laub Davison, at Braddyville, Iowa, and died April 25, 1971 at the age of 68 years and 5 days.

He spent his entire life on the farm east of Braddyville where he was born and raised.

He was married to [Dorothy] Ruth Johnson October 12, 1927 and to this union two children were born: Delmar Lee and Truman Guy.

He was preceeded in death by his father and mother, 3 sisters, Orpha May, Dilla Alice and an infant sister: also one brother Ora Clyde Davison.

Left to mourn his passing is his wife Ruth of the home, a son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Delmar Davison and children Sheryl, Mark, Brenda, and Dean; also a son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Truman Davison and children Ricky, Randy, Steve, and Keith, all of Hopkins, Mo; two sisters, Bertha Moffit of Braddyville, Ia and Dicie Chestnut of Clearmont, Mo; and four brothers, Wilbur Davison, Roy Davison, Homer Davison and Virgil  Davison all of Braddyville. Also his mother-in-law, Grace Johnson of Clarinda, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers at the funeral April 28 were: Merlin Davison, Wayne Davison, Gary Davison, Max Davison, Gail Stevens, and Max Edwards.

Mary Jane Fine Rites August 10

Funeral services for Mrs. Oliver Claude (Mary Jane) Fine, 82, of Bedford, were held August 10 at the Siam United Methodist Church with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs. Fine died at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo. August 7. Interment was at Shearer Cemetery.

Mary Jane Moffit, daughter of LeRoy and Frances Allie Strawbridge Moffit, was born November 28, 1888, in Nodaway County, Missouri.

She moved with her parents to Page County Iowa when she was a young girl. Here she grew to adulthood and was active in the Church and Community affairs in the Siam area. Early in her youth she became a member of the Siam Methodist Church and continued in this membership.

On December 24, 1911, she was united in marriage to Oliver Claude Fine at the home of the bride's parents in Page County. They lived on a farm in the Siam area until moving to Elmo, Mo., where they operated a hardware store for about five years. Then they lived on a farm near Conway, until 1935 when they moved to the home place in Ross Township, Taylor County where she has continued to reside. Mr. Fine died April 12, 1968.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and an infant son, and a brother Byron Moffit.

Left to cherish memories of her good life are four sons: Orris and his wife, Ardith; John and his wife, Eva; Lyle and his wife, Marion; Fred and his wife, Youvaun, all of the Hopkins community; 14 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Vennie Huddle of Bellevue, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.

She was a kind and loving wife, mother, sister and neighbor and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

RALPH DOUGLAS FINE

Ralph Douglas Fine, son of Douglas and Nealy Smith Fine, was born in Taylor County, Ia, on June 30, 1893. He departed this life on June 11, 1966, at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at the age of 72 years.

Most of his lifetime was spent in Taylor County, Iowa, where he was reared, educated, and engaged in farming.

On March 7, 1917, Ralph was united in marriage at Clarinda, Ia to Viva Shields. Four daughters were born to this union. They are Mrs Richard {Elsie Rose) Burton of New, Market, Ia, Mrs George (Lucille) Stanley of Bedford, Ia, Mrs Hollis (Edith) Naven of Lenox, Ia, and Mrs Bill (Hope) Pratt of New Market, Ia.

He is survived by his wife, the four daughters, four sons-in-law, three sisters, Mrs G B (Elma) Ingram, of Canon City, Colo, Mrs A E (Rose) Retzer of Canon City, Colo, Mrs Earl (Mary) Taylor of Stronghurst, Ill, one brother, Claude of Hopkins, Mo; four grandchildren: Patricia Stanley of Des Moines, Ia, Gordon Douglas and Billie Joyce Pratt of New Market, Ia, and Eleanor Jo Burton of New Market, Ia. He also leaves a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Cleve, of Cheyenne, Wyo.

Ralph's life speaks for itself, because be a life long or short, its completeness depends on what it was lived for. All who knew him will long remember him.

The funeral was held June 14, 1966 at the Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda at 2 P.M., conducted by Glen Mitchell of the Christian church at Siam.

Horace Richardson was soloist and sang "Beyond The Sunset" and "In The Garden," accompanied by Aletha Hutchings. Interment was in Shearer cemetery.

Miss Friend, 88 died Monday

Miss Carrie [Belle] Friend, 88, died early this Monday at the Gillespie Nursing Home where she has made her home since last May. Funeral services will be at Walker Funeral Home at 10 am Wednesday and burial in Shearer Cemetery near Braddyville.

She was born Oct 14, 1882, the daughter of Isaac [Thomas] and Evelyn Rachael [Farrens] Friend on a farm in the Siam vicinity. She had lived in Clarinda with a brother, Elmer, at 408 South 13th St prior to going to the nursing home.

Miss Friend had assisted in numerous homes of the community as housekeeper and done cafe work locally. Her brother is her nearest survivor.

Duke Gray died Sunday of attack

Lawrence (Duke) Gray, 65, retired Lisle Corpn employee, was dead on arrival at the Municipal Hospital at 11:45 pm Sunday following a coronary attack at his home at 323 West Clark while preparing to retire.

He was native of Tingley, born Oct 11, 1905 to Mr and Mrs Bryon Gray. He had worked at Lisle Corpn, retired on June 1 after 31 years. He was president of the local 1300 I AM union for 25 years, serving as second president after the union was organized in 1946. Since retiring, he has been active with lawn and cemetery work.

Services are to be Wednesday. The funeral is at Walker's Funeral Home at 2 pm and burial will be in Clarinda cemetery. Bearers will be associates from Lisle, including Fred Graham, Fred Hagemeier, Vern Lisle, Ed Lisle, Ural Huddle and Clyde Hughes.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn, six sons and a daughter, two stepdaughters and a stepson.

They are William Gray of Bellevue, Neb, Richard Gray of Clarinda, John Gray of Olathe, Kansas, Raymond Gray of Knickerson, Neb, Mrs Leo (Dottie) Fellers of Grandview, Mo, Charles Gray of Merriam, Kansas, Thomas Gray of Clarinda, Mrs Jim (Mary) Jillson of Clarinda, Mrs Roy (Betty) Holste of Clarinda, John Beckel of Fort Dodge, 29 grandchildren. His mother is Pearl Gray who has lived with him. He has two brothers James Gray and Wilbur Gray of Clarinda.

He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Harry, and a sister Margaret.

Mrs Ethel Head buried

Mrs Ethel Head died Tuesday at the Municipal Hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home this Thursday afternoon with interment in the family plot in the Siam cemetery.

She was born Oct 25, 1892 in Taylor County to Mary Clayton Scrivner and Orie B [oon] Scrivner and she spent most of her life in the Siam community.

She was married to John Pearl Head in May 1938 and she was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Following his death she remained on the farm until about 1961 when she made her home with her aunt Mrs Mertie Stipe in Clarinda. In recent years she and her cousin Florence McCarty resided at 517 East Main.

Survivors include an uncle Harl Scrivner of Los Angeles, Cal, two aunts Mrs Phoebie [Phoebe] Clayton and Mrs Maude Clayton, a stepdaughter Leona Werts, a stepson Raymond Head and several cousins.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Siam, but attended church in Clarinda. She was a member of the Builders Sunday School Class and the Siam Chapter of the OES.

Rev John L Beebout officiated at the funeral. Joan Archer was soloist and Grace Perry organist. Casket bearers were Dennis Jeffers, Floyd Sprague, Emory Hardee, Darrell Potter, Charles Shoemaker, Jr, and Orie L Clayton.

Noah S Huddle

Noah S [utphin] Huddle, son of Emanuel and [Sarah] Louisa [Sheets] Huddle, was born June 19, 1869, at Decatur, Ind, and passed away in his home at Braddyville, Iowa, after several weeks’ illness October 23, 1942, age 73 years, 4 months, 10 days. At the age of 5 years he came with his parents to Page county, Iowa, where he spent the remainder of his life.

On   October   11, 1894, he    was united in marriage to     Lettie    F [rances] Maxwell. To this union 3 sons and 3 daughters were born: Ora Clarence   of   Hopkins, Mo, Raymond Glen   of   Braddyville, Mrs     Etta Naomi   Dugan   of   Douglas, Wyo, Anna Louisa at home and two who preceded him in death, Mrs Lela Blanch   Lasley   and   Paul   George; He    was    clearly    converted    on Thanksgiving day in the year 1897 and was   sanctified wholly a few months later.  He    lived    a    conscientious Christian life and died triumphant in Christ.

He leaves his devoted wife and four children and ten grandchildren, three brothers, Jonah Huddle of Clarinda, Chris of Braddyville and Abe of Red Oak and other relatives and, friends.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, October 25, at the Shearer church and burial was made in the Shearer cemetery. Rev Walter Whyte of Mt Moriah, Mo, conducted the service. He, was assisted by Rev O B Brown ana Rev. Charles Dickey of Shambaugh. Music was furnished by Mrs O B Brown, Mrs Walter Whyte and Miss Letty Horning. Pallbearers were Evert Garrett, Ira Chestnut, Sid Woldruff, Grant Kreider, Byron Moffitt and Roy Davison.

Delilah Maxwell burial at Shearer

Miss Delilah Pearl Maxwell, 80, of rural Braddyville, died Thursday evening at her home. She was born Jan 23, 1891 near Braddyville daughter of James Dorsey and Jane Townsend Maxwell. She lived all of her life in the same neighborhood east of town.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Ella Maxwell and Gracy Myrtle Maxwell both of the home.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Rev Lewis Hunter officiating. Burial was in the Shearer Cemetery. Gilbert Burch was soloist and Miss Aletha Hutchings organist. Casket bearers were Elmer Dunn, Marvin Dunn, Merlin Davison, Homer Davison, Gene Hartman, and Paul Hartman.

Ellis Maxwell, 73, was Page Co native

Ellis [Dorsey] Maxwell, 73, of rural Braddyville, died Friday morning at the Municipal Hospital where he had been a patient for a day.

He was born March 17, 1896, at Braddyville, the son of James [Dorsey] and Jane Townsend Maxwell. He was a farmer and had lived in southeast Page County all of his life.

Three sons and one daughter survive: Harold of Philadelphia, Pa, Lowell of Clarinda, Wendell of Blanchard, and Mrs Lorena Wehrkamp of Essex. There are 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and four sisters: Mary Ella Maxwell, Grace Myrtle Maxwell, Delilah Pearl Maxwell all of Braddyville, and Ervena [Alma] Maxwell of Clarinda. He was preceded in death by his wife Lepha [Forest Hamm] and son Darwin [Ellison].

Funeral services will be held at the Walker Funeral Home at 1 pm Tuesday with James Pemble as the minister. Maynard Burch and Aletha Hutchings will be in charge of the music. Casket bearers will be: Elmer Dunn, Raymond McDonald, Gene Hartman, Paul Hartman, Merlin Davison, and Rolla Davison.

Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery east of Braddyville.

Miss Maxwell, 77, died Saturday

Miss Ervena Alma Maxwell, 77, died Saturday morning at Clarinda Municipal hospital.

 She was born July 23, 1893, near Braddyville, the daughter of James [Dorsey] and Jane Townsend Maxwell. Her home was at 614 West State Street. She had been employed as a nurse’s aid at the Clarinda Rest Home before her health forced her to retire.

She is survived by three sisters: Mary Ella Maxwell, Grace Myrtle Maxwell and Delilah Pearl Maxwell, all of rural Braddyville.

Funeral services will be held at Walker Funeral Home, 2 pm, Tuesday with Rev H Lavern Kinzel officiating. Music will be provided by Miss Aletha Hutchings and Maynard Burch. Casket bearers will be Gene and Paul Hartman, Rollie and Merlin Davison, Elmer and Marvin Dunn.

Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery near Braddyville.

Mary Ella Maxwell, 92, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 7 am this Thursday after a lingering illness. She was the daughter of the late James Dorsey and Jane Townsend Maxwell, and was born on a farm near Braddyville, and has spent her entire lifetime in that community.

She is survived by one sister, Gracy Myrtle Maxwell of Braddyville.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Saturday, with Rev Lewis Hunter in charge. Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery near Braddyville.

Maynard Burch will be soloist and Miss Aletha Hutchings organist.

Charles Nelson

Charles E. [lmer] Nelson, 85, life-long resident of Clarinda, died suddenly Monday afternoon after being stricken at his home.

He was born July 5, 1903 at Clarinda, the son of Lewis E. [lmer] and Clara Davison Nelson.

In 1931, he was married to Ruth [Marjorie] Murdock, who survives.

Nelson and his brother, Edward were third generation operators of Nelson Market in Clarinda. Their store was a longtime landmark of quality meats and small-town service rendered to their customers.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of the home; and two sons, Dan Nelson of Ft. Wayne, In, and Richard Nelson of Woburn, Ma. There are four grandchildren. Mrs. Jack (Margaret) Wheat of Vero Beach, Fl, is a sister.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Witmer officiating.

Burial was in Clarinda cemetery.

NORTHBORO- George Ohnmacht, 66, of Southwest Page County died March 30 at the Hamburg hospital, and services were held Monday from Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah with burial in Nebraska City cemetery. He had served on the school board.

The family farm home has been near Blanchard since 1940 when they moved from Nebraska City, his birthplace. He leaves his wife, Lois, a son, Dennis, and two grandchildren of the Blanchard area, and a sister, Mrs Arnold Athen of Hamburg.

The Iowa Crippled Children Association is suggested as recipient of memorials, Mrs Verna Peterson to serve in charge of the fund.

Soloist for the service was Bruce Wagoner and Mrs Margret Woods was at the organ. Caring for flowers were Mrs Clifford Blackman, Mrs Leslie Peterson, Mrs Byron Scotton.

Honorary bearers were Charles Anderson, Karl Boylan, Leonard Dwinger, Leonard Gell, Ralph Gomel, Floyd Ramsey, Morris Richards, Byron Scotton. Casket bearers were Robert Anderson, Clifford Blackman, Howard Carlson, Jerry Gomel, Willard Save, Eddie Scotton.

 

 

[Reid, Lola Ann Miller]

Lola Reid

Memorial services for Mrs. Nathan (Lola) Reid, 90, of Clarinda, held November 30 at the Clarinda Christian Church, were conducted by Rev. La Vern Kruzel. Mrs. Reid died November 28, 1969 at the Clarinda Rest Home. Interment was at the Shearer Cemetery.

Lola [Ann] Reid, daughter of Weston M. [ilton] and Elizabeth [Jane] Acree Miller, was born Oct. 20, 1879 near Siam. She received her education in the rural schools of Taylor and Page counties and later took a special music course in the University of Oklahoma.

At an early age she united with the Christian Church at Siam and was always willing to give of her talents both in music and teaching. About 1897 she began giving music lessons in the neighborhood driving a horse from house to house and taught until her health failed in 1965.

She was united in marriage to Nathan Hugh Reid. They made their home on the Reid farm west off Siam until Mr. Reid's death in 1936.

In 1941 she moved to Clarinda where she associated with the Christian Church, Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodges in Clarinda and the White Shrine in Shenandoah and musical circles.

Her parents, one brother, John Miller, and one nephew preceded her in death.

She is survived by a brother, Will Miller, of Anaheim, Calif.; her faithful companion of 40 years, Ella Bix; one step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Shields, who with her husband resides in Siam; four step-grandchildren Reid Shields, Siam, Mrs. C. J. Shreck, West Des Moines, Mrs. Clark (Betty) Crawford, Clarinda, Mrs. Robert (Billie) Rallstin, East Lansing, Michigan; two nieces, Mrs. Mae Hatfield, San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Roger (Eva) Young, Fullerton, Calif., three nephews, Eldon Miller, Siam, Carl Miller, Albuquerque, N. Mex., and Jr. Miller, Anaheim,  Calif.

[Reid, Lola Ann Miller]

Mrs Lola Reid, 90, died; taught music 68 years

Mrs Hugh (Lola) Reid, who reached her 90th birthday on Oct 20, died Friday at the Clarinda Rest Home where she had moved recently from her home at 415 W State St.

The service held Sunday at the First Christian Church bespoke her wide acquaintance by the large attendance. The Rev H LaVern Kinzel was clergy with Mrs Willard Andrew soloist and Mrs Ronald J Perry organist. Burial was in Shearer Cemetery near the community of Siam where she had lived so long.

She was formerly Lola [Ann] Miller, receiving her early education in the rural schools of Page and Taylor counties.   She took a special music course in the University of Oklahoma, and about 1897    began    giving music lessons. Her early teaching required that she occasionally drive a horse from house to house. She taught until her health failed in 1965.

She was married to Nathan Hugh Reid on Nov 30, 1909 at St Joseph, Mo. They made their home on the Reid farm west of Siam, and during a few years before Mr Reid's death in 1936 took trips to New Mexico for their winter home.

In 1940, Mrs Reid moved to Clarinda, where Miss Ella Bix, who has been her companion for 40 years, shared her home. In addition to her church, she has been active with Order of Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge in Clarinda, the White Shrine in Shenandoah, and musical circles.

Her brother, Will Miller, is of Anaheim, Calif, and a brother, John, preceded her. Mrs Frank (Fannie) Shields of Siam is a stepdaughter.

Casket bearers for the services were Eldon Miller, Clark Crawford, John Miller, Reid Shields, John Crawford and C J Shreck. Walker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.   

 

 

[Rodgers, Robert W.]

Robert Rodgers died after heart surgery

Robert [W. ] Rodgers, brother-in-law of Mrs Robert Karg, died at Sacramento, Cal, Wednesday afternoon.

Rodgers, 44, had undergone open-heart surgery which was successful, but his heart would not return to normal after the surgery, Mrs Karg reports. Seventeen pints of blood had been donated through the Red Cross bloodmobile here to replace those used by him.

He is survived by his wife, the former Omega Davis, two daughters, and a son.

Cecil Woldruff Rites December 1 In Siam 

Funeral services for Cecil [Guy] Woldruff, 73, lifelong farmer in the Siam area, were held December 1 at the Siam United Methodist Church with Carl Cummings officiating assisted by Rev. Ed Osburn. Mr. Woldruff died November 28, 1972 at his home in Siam. Interment was at the Shearer Cemetery.

Mr. Woldruff was born May 15, 1899, in Page County, the son of James and Amanda (Fine) Woldruff.

He received his education at the Pine School in Buchanan Township.

On Jan. 21,1920, he was married to Mary Stewart of Siam.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Darrel Perry of Coin, Mrs. Duane Sunderman of Clarinda and Mrs. Fred Fresenmeyer of Eldon, Mo.; a son, James, of Clarinda; three sisters, Mrs. Floyd Clayton of New Market, Mrs. Ethel Neal of Vancouver, Ore., and Mrs. Alfred Orme of Hopkins, Mo.; four brothers. Glen of Hopkins, Elbert of Colorado Springs, Colo., and George and Marvin of Clarinda, 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Loy, Orie and Loren.

He was a member of the Siam church for about 50 years and served as church treasurer for 49 years. He also was on the Taylor County ASC committee and was a Polk Township official for 16 years.

Cecil was a wonderful neighbor, exemplifying His Christian spirit and his love for God in his daily life.

The family suggests memorial for the heart fund, in charge of Mrs. Mike Lovitt of Clarinda and Mrs. Carrol Spaulding of Hopkins.
